Do you live somewhere "desirable?"

Just musing as I daydream on rightmove. I live in a HA property so basically had to go where they placed me. It's not a desirable place but is sometimes described as "convenient" for the nearby cities. I guess most of the people that live in my town either do so because they can't afford to move elsewhere or have ties to the location, I don't think many outsiders would choose it if they had other options.

Do you live somewhere referred to as "desirable" and do you like it?

Yes, in one of the 10 ten places in Europe. Summer is bollocks because its a tourist town but its really nice the rest of the time. Beaches and national parks on our doorstep, but an airport not too far.

Devicey · 27/02/2024 17:39

Yes. Leafy Surrey.

I would find it hard to move elsewhere in the UK.

To be so close to the airports, city and coast makes it a difficult move to make.

Also it's nice to know that if we sold up we could basically afford to live anywhere else in the country.

But that also means we might not be able to afford to move back!

ApolloandDaphne · 27/02/2024 17:42

I live in one of the most desirable places in Scotland. I love living here.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/02/2024 17:43

Yes, very. Right next to a 250 acre park in London.

Best place I've ever lived - calm, peaceful, close to the river

Loads of things to do and 14-18 minutes from central London if I wanted even more to do

I'm always shocked on here the slating London gets, it's so much better than the expensive international cities of New York, Paris - the area I live in people say hello/good morning. Probably the friendliest place I've ever lived

garedhaus · 27/02/2024 17:46

Yes, a marmite bit of London. Not a traditionally desirable part for families, as it's very busy, crowded and has drug problems and litter, but it's central and a popular tourist area. Property prices are high but it has cheaper properties like ex-council flats and houses divided into maisonettes. I really love living here, the public transport connections are brilliant, my dcs go to a lovely private school, and there are loads of extracurricular activities and classes for toddlers. Lots of things for adults to do too, like an independent cinema, fringe theatres, music venues and restaurants. But we don't really get out to those as we have young dcs.

No.

Deliberately chose an "undesirable" area but it suits me.

Kids are grown up so I don't need schools anymore and it has a great chippie

😂 we have one of the best chippies in the country not too far away. I don't actually mind where I live but if I could afford to live elsewhere I probably would move.

Yep, Bristol and my particular area is very popular. Also had the London exodus so it's all quite different to how it was. I am actually from here and I like it because it's my home.

Get lots of flyers from estate agents wanting us to sell our house, no thanks!

Clicheinaqashqai · 27/02/2024 17:53

Nope, always looked down upon and sneered at. However I like living here. It is close to London, affordable, quick trains and good road links, easy access to country and coast, plus pretty much any amenities you need within a 20min drive

RampantIvy · 27/02/2024 17:58

This is what Rightmove says about my location

Enjoying a delightful village location, offering immediate access to glorious open countryside resulting in the most idyllic of outdoors lifestyles

And this
a desirable area known for its peaceful surroundings

Finallybreathe · 27/02/2024 18:07

Yes. I live in apparently one of the most affluent areas in the country but it isn’t all wonderful tbf. Some drivers here can be real twats and people aren’t so friendly. It’s great though for connectivity & very close to a major international airport.

romdowa · 27/02/2024 18:10

I live in a very sought after place in Ireland and while it's pretty to look at. There's very little here and most of the shops are crazy expensive. Thankfully the city is about 40 minutes away.

North or south ? Sounds very similar to where I live.

Humphriescushion · 27/02/2024 18:13

Grew up in a very undesirable area but I had a great childhood there and it has a certain character, Now I live abroad in a desirable area and love it. It gets busy with tourists in high summer but this doesn’t bother and I enjoy the buzz ( I don’t have to worry about parking though so that makes ok).

Startingagainandagain · 27/02/2024 18:16

Used to live in London and now live in a small, safe, pretty seaside town in Kent.

Could not afford sea views or a pretty cottage in the 'best' part of town as they cost a fortune but I have a terrace in a quiet street so I am happy.

Fast trains to London (1.30 hour) so it is not in the middle of nowhere either.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 27/02/2024 18:18

I live in what estate agents describe as a desirable street in what I describe as a not particularly desirable town🤣

20 years ago I was embarrassed to say I lived here, it’s so much better now but still not especially desirable! Has got lots of positives though and I am happy here. Sea and countryside less than a mile in different directions.

CeeJay81 · 27/02/2024 18:20

I live in a small rural community close to both mountains and sea(a long way from large towns and cities). A lot of people have probably never heard of it and would have difficulty pronouncing it...however many people move here from other parts of the UK. So I'd say its desirable in some ways.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/02/2024 18:22

Yes
in a national park in sunny Devon.
it’s quite rural but 25 minutes drive to a pretty city.
yes I love it.

I’m guessing Wilmslow or Hale sort of area?

ManchesterLu · 27/02/2024 18:24

It depends what you desire. I live in the perfect place if you're a commuter to the nearby cities. In a horrible place if you like the countryside/nice walks etc.

Ringpeace · 27/02/2024 18:26

Yes. We consider ourselves supremely fortunate to live where we do. Every day feels like being on holiday.

Ironically, we could only afford to move here after buying in a neighbourhood in London that was very far from being desirable in any way at all, and which then became very desirable over the subsequent decades. Sold up and never looked back, even though we loved London and always will.

Izzabellasasperella · 27/02/2024 18:26

Porfirio · 27/02/2024 16:53

Yes. But on a cliff! 😀

Me too!

Snippit · 27/02/2024 18:28

Apparently according to the greedy estate agents my home is in a desirable area (sorry, I despise them and partly blame them for the unbelievable jump in property prices by overvaluations during covid) We’re on the doorstep of the Peak District and on a lovely quiet cul de sac with amazing neighbours.

We have amazing access to the M1 and other important roads, and just 10 minutes away from Chatsworth House, in Derbyshire. On a sunny day it’s just stunning, with deer wandering through the grounds. The house is fascinating and the gardens are lovely, definitely worth a visit.

Tibssix · 27/02/2024 18:30

We live in the nicest part of a decent town, but I've never heard our town being described as desirable! The town centre is very busy and we are very close too all local amenities. It's not where I would choose to live if I didn't have to consider schools, work etc, but it works too well for us while our kids are young. I do love our house/street/neighbourhood.

pickytube · 27/02/2024 18:31

Yes very desirable location in London. Tourists will hang outside homes taking their instagramable photos.

SophiaElise · 27/02/2024 18:32

lemmefinish · 27/02/2024 17:09

Yes, in London, in a neighbourhood very popular with young families due to three 'Good' and 'Excellent' primaries within walking distance, three parks, and proximity to train and tube. Lots of shops and restaurants and a very special two weeks in June!
Prices reflect its popularity.

Wimbledon? I thought prices had dropped there?

Well I guess the £6 million houses in the village can now be bought for £5 million...
