Best sock for walking long distances?

Just looking for recommendations. I bought a pair of 1000 mile socks but wondering if there are any other good options?

My favourite walking socks are Darn Tough hiker socks. They are not cheap, but they like up to their name, and are very comfortable.

What is the thinking behind wearing sock liners + socks? DC doing D of E soon and not sure whether this is a good idea or not.
