To absolutely long for the 80's again

I was around 16 during the peak of this era. I was just coming into pop music, walkmans & fashion.

Young, care-free, no responsibilities, slim. It was such an easy-going era. No smart tech. You could phone a company and actually speak to someone without waiting in an endless queue or going through a list of around 10 different options. Shops had extra stock 'out the back' so you could always ask them to check 'out back' for more sizes etc. Less cars on the road. Less rules/regulations/H&S in general, much more easy going (although I recognise that some of the rules nowadays are essential and should have existed back then) Less tech meant less opportunity for scams/thieves/hacking.

Life was generally so much more laid back, casual & easy going. I LONG for these days again so much. I don't actually like modern day and the stresses that come with it. I wanted to make a booking for a day out with the DC the other day, I was on hold for 1 hour 45 minutes. I gave up and hung up.

Anyone else resonate ?

This is definitely a case of rose tinted glasses. I was also a kid in the 80's so also have those happy memories.

However there was also
12%+ interest rates
1 in 10 unemployment
Riots in major cities
Miners strike and power outtages
Falklands war
Cold war
Margaret Thatcher
Less equality for women
AIDS and being terrified of having sex
Little acceptance of people differing sexuality
racism....

I could go on.

I wasn't born then but I have a rose tinted view of the 1960s and which I'd been alive to enjoy those years.

"Just remembering how you had to memorise phone numbers unless you had a pen to hand - but they were shorter than today's mobiles at least."

I can still remember the phone number - landline, obviously - of the house I lived in from 1980 to 1989, aged 10 to 19. 😅

Not at all. Teen mags were full of crap but there was nowhere near the pressure on girls that there is now.

Edited

I disagree. The pressure on social media on girls and young women is awful these days. You must have forgotten that social media did not exist in the 80s.

Mementomorissons · 27/02/2024 11:29

I just long for anytime before social media existed. I even think in the future they'll say that "invention of the internet" and "invention of social media" were two distinct and separate pivotal moments.

The internet has changed our world like the industrial revolution did, but I think social media has had a bigger impact.

I'd gladly even go back to 2005 before Facebook really kicked in!

Polaroids! Phone boxes! No mobile phones!

Yes I remember thinking HIV was very scary, and Saddam Hussain. Look at how far we've come with HIV due to some brilliant people.

Eh? You didn't read my post properly before commenting. 🙄Try again. And see my earlier one too.

Of course there was.

"I must, I must, I must improve my bust
The bigger the better, the tighter the sweater,
The boys depend on us"

Sorry @Meowandthen my reply was supposed to be in response to this post and not yours. I was agreeing with you not sure how I did that

I love a lot of 80s tracks. That's where my UN comes from, I misheard lyrics as the sheep and the sword. Instead it's actually the sheiks and the sword.

Not as cute as imagining a sheep with a sword.
