Is there a thread about this already?

So many questions…

Love that cake, @cuckyplunt :-)

I don’t think The Savoy would be used to this kind of tat

The Savoy background in the photos looks really kitschy imo.

The Savoy auctioned off all the traditional fittings years ago. It’s a lot more bling now.

Flowersandforests · 26/02/2024 17:02

I’m chuckling at PPs who are acting all outraged that OP has asked how they could afford a cake / wedding like that - it’s not the norm for an 18 year old to have a wedding like that so of course it’s only natural to wonder…!!

@Heather37231 Travellers are very traditional, so it's highly likely her Father paid for the wedding. I'm not sure why you're so concerned with who paid for their wedding?

Because the article keeps saying that she, the 18 year old, paid for the cake and that the cake maker has been working for the 18 year old for 6 years. No quotes from or interviews with the parents. I wondered if there was perhaps a tradition of several extended family members clubbing together to fund a wedding like this, and perhaps events on this scale it being reserved for those higher up in a social hierarchy eg the daughter of a prominent figure in a sort of “royalty” kind of thing. Also whether this is standard within the community or only really within the reach of a Tyson Fury type. And how someone like the 20 year old groom then gets himself in the position to fund this for his daughters when their time comes in 20 years. I don’t remember anything this lavish in MBFGW, though didn't watch them all.

Yes they do and we are allowed to ask about it so we can learn more. Especially when they are content to be featured in the Daily Mail.

What exactly do you need to 'learn', OP? I think you're being goady with a smattering of faux wide-eye, which I think has fooled nobody.

There is nothing to see here, it's somebody's wedding cake and you know exactly what you meant to do by posting about it.

Prefer the one that my 18yo made for her Dad this weekend

That's amazing

Errrr.....care to explain?
Why would HMRC be chasing her parents?

You don't see the problem with that bigoted statement do you?

Heather37231 · 26/02/2024 17:20

Also interesting it says they got married at St Mary’s in the Strand but that’s not a Catholic Church, and Irish travellers are predominantly Catholic I believe.

I think it says more about you than me that you jump to that conclusion about my motives.

These types of people really need a visit by the taxman imo.

The Savoy has crashed downhill in its decor/ambience over the past few years. Gross and showy.

Shania7788 · 26/02/2024 17:24

“Childhood sweetheart” seems an odd phrase to use for someone who only recently stopped being a child. But the cake is an amazing piece of art and I never imagined cakes could actually cost that much

Utterknowitall · 26/02/2024 17:25

Well, that's put me right off having my wedding reception at The Savoy.

As soon as I saw the cake I knew this thread would fill with racism towards travellers. I don't understand why MN's think it's fair game.

Generalising a whole race after watching one episode of MBFGW is racism OP and if you don't get it, you never will.

I had to chuckle at this. At the point this post appeared in the thread there was literally no racism against travellers. You were literally foaming at the mouth in anticipation of a hate-filled thread, hence preempting it with your post 🤣

Because an 18 year old having an insane amount of disposable income to spend on a cake is a giant red flag for someone who doesn't pay tax like the rest of us. I would also be concerned about money laundering (why does a cake cost that much...?). I feel like it's dodgy all round.

Wow - thats amazing. The contestants on the Great British Bale Off are going to have to up their game!

Saucery · 26/02/2024 17:31

I can’t bring myself to care about where/how old/how much about other people’s weddings. She looks happy and long may she remain so.

I admit I don’t get the polystyrene wedding cake thing though. I mean, I do for this huge fairytale construction, sort of, but my friend was waxing lyrical about the talents of her friend making a wedding cake for her dc. Except it wasn’t a wedding cake, it was a polystyrene cylinder iced and decorated. Basic tray cake for the guests - I know that’s for ease of prep but I’d want the main cake for family and friends later.

I'm very surprised the Savoy would accept a booking from travellers to be honest

I used to teach Madeline and her family have been dining at Harrods for years as she used to tell me all about it when in Junior school. They still shop in Harrods as I know people who are still close to the family and actually, a lot of travellers hold significant events at The Savoy as they can afford it to create traditional memories for their culture. I learned a lot about their culture and have taught all different travellers over the years so know that the Savoy do indeed accept such bookings as know of others who have married there.

They are used to hosting high cost events for influencers, travellers and famous people on a regular basis-money is money, they are not prejudiced against people who are willing to pay for an unforgettable day of their choice.

RabbitsRock · 05/05/2024 18:00

The bride looks a lot older than 18.
