Is there a thread about this already?

So many questions…

@Heather37231 then slide into the Daily Blackshirts comments and ask there. You're sure to find plenty of people who "think" like you.

Heather37231 · 26/02/2024 14:27

Sure. Everyone knows an 18 year old who has got married in the Savoy with a 13k cake. Nothing to see here at all 🤷‍♀️

Is watching MBFGW also “judgmental” then? What’s racist about curiosity?

It’s awful. Money really doesn’t buy class does it?

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

You clearly have made this thread to laugh and judge and look down on this bride. I'm sure there will be other people happy to go along with you, but I won't personally.

I wouldn't choose to spend that much on a wedding full stop, but that is of no importance, it's not me spending it. It doesn't matter whether it's being spent on the cake, flowers or the venue, they can do what they want with their own money.

Why are you so hung up on her age and the fact that you think others have probably paid for it? Most likely yes, in the same way that a random 18 year old might be gifted a car for instance. It doesn't make something morally superior because you pay for it yourself you know. It sounds very much like you dislike the that an 18 year old is getting gifted her wedding?

Being dismissive of other people's choices when they make no difference to you is a bit distasteful, especially when it's culturally motivated; it seems like you feel morally superior.

I mean it isn't to my taste either but what qualifies as "class" I mean I don't think she was going for subtle.

Heather37231 · 26/02/2024 14:41

Nope, don’t dislike or disapprove of anything. It’s just so far outside anything remotely like my daily life that I find it fascinating.

Bloody hideous.

chingaling · 26/02/2024 14:44

As soon as I saw the cake I knew this thread would fill with racism towards travellers. I don't understand why MN's think it's fair game.

Generalising a whole race after watching one episode of MBFGW is racism OP and if you don't get it, you never will.

Stichintime · 26/02/2024 14:47

You linked a Daily Mail article, nuff said.

MBFGW was a godawful concept. No idea how it was pitched to the Traveller Community, but it was definitely pitched at certain kind of TV viewer -the type of person who would have toured Bedlam Hospital on a Sunday afternoon to look at (mock) the "unfortunates" back in the 19th century.

Personally I think the G and the P words have pejorative connotations/racist overtones. I don't know if you meant to be racist but you clearly have a bias. The Daily Blackshirt loves to shit stir....this article clearly demonstrates that. They knew what they were doing publishing - it was designed to get a certain part of the population frothing over a wedding.

JaninaDuszejko · 26/02/2024 14:50

Personally I think the cake is fabulous. A magical castle, what's not to love about it? I can think of far tackier things, not least starting a thread on MN to slag off a stranger's taste in weddings.

Heather37231 · 26/02/2024 14:55

Literally nowhere have I slagged anything off.

I went to the comments section. I was curious as to whether OP had asked her questions in there.

I'm confused. Why are OAPs and heating bills being discussed in the comments?

Are they suggesting the benefits system paid for the cake? Are wedding cakes the new benefits goat?

re: the cake whether it is to your taste or not you've got to admit it took a hell of a lot of talent from the cake maker.

Heather37231 · 26/02/2024 14:57

Daily Mail comments are vile, would never go near them.

No, you loaded the gun for others to fire.

Heather37231 · 26/02/2024 15:00

Actually that’s not true, I have obliquely criticised the Daily Mail’s rubbish journalism with statements like “her childhood sweetheart” when she is 18.

Looks like a snowy Hogwarts. To each their own.

Skiphopbump · 26/02/2024 15:08

I wonder if they actually cut the cake. There were only six eight inch cakes - would that be enough for 200 guests, were there sheet cakes so everyone got some cake or no cake eaten by the guests.

JanewaysBun · 26/02/2024 15:13

Very big, looks nice

Maybe they've know each other since tiny?
If I knew someone since I was a toddler and grew up with them and started dating them at maybe 14, I would say childhood sweetheart is accurate

pickledandpuzzled · 26/02/2024 15:17

It’s stunning, as a piece of craft

I would have lots of questions and would gawp at an 18yr old able to marry in the Savoy with a 13k wedding cake.

That’s entirely without any reference to her culture. I’d wonder about aristocracy, or Russian billionaires, or Arab princesses or similar.

People are saying it’s a traveller wedding.

It’s not racism to say that the wedding is miles outside the experience of the majority of people. It’s inevitable that we’d talk about it- something so exceptional.

I don’t think anyone has used any racist slurs. There was one reference to tax arrangements that could be considered racist.

Please point out the other elements of racism I’ve missed- I’m not culturally sensitive and wouldn’t want to offend.

It’s basically a room centrepiece, the cake is kind of just an excuse to build a fairytale castle. I think that the picture of the fairly normal-looking tiered cake “before decoration” diminishes the impact, as your first reaction is “wow, that’s all made of cake?! But it’s not like they tried to pretend it was, it’s all clearly explained.
8kh of fondant icing though so they must have iced some polystyrene?

It’s stunning the way it fits the venue. I’ve never been in the savoy, but the castle reflects the decor in their amazingly.

I must say, bride and groom look older than 18 and 20. DH and I were 23 and looked like babies 🤣

She “married her childhood sweetheart”

At the ripe old age of 18 🤣

Exactly what I thought 🤣

Yes, I was struck by that too. Maybe the Savoy should keep it and offer it to other couples to slot their cakes into! Seems a shame to bin all that hard work.
