My stupid mistake and I'm gutted...has anyone else done something similar?

Last October I booked theatre tickets for me and DH to see Hamilton and I was so exited.

Unfortunately shortly after that I received a cancer diagnosis, so normal life went put the window ...but I had that to look forward to.

Last night the date finally came round, yeahhh....and both me and DH donned our finery, had a bite to eat, drink in the bar and made our way to our seats.....only to find other people on them! After a bit of confusion we realised we were a week late! The theatre staff were so kind but as it was the last night it was sold out.
So we left totally gutted and down £200.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who has done something so incredibly stupid.....it may make me feel just a tad better!

Was invited to a special deaf autism conference in Birmingham. Arranged cover at work. Monday morning saw the lady who was covering me in the shop and asked if she was still okay for Tuesday... She said no she was covering today not tomorrow. Rushed home and realised I was leaving that day and the conference was the next day! NHS were paying for my hotel and transport so was glad I saw my colleague!!

RheaRend · 25/02/2024 15:10

I turned up for a flight a day late - cost me £1000 to get home!

theduchessofspork · 25/02/2024 15:11

Once turned up for a conference a day early. This did involve a flight, although fortunately a short-hall one…

I've gone to the wrong wake before. So I had to shake hands with 20 strangers in their house. Then had to go to the wake I should have been at in another house down the road. I was so embarrassed.

A relative once missed her friend's wedding because she thought it was the following day. She saw photos coming into a whatsapp group and was so confused. She was gutted!

My friend recently had a 10th wedding anniversary. Booked the hotel they got married in for the weekend…except she booked the wrong hotel. They were wandering around commenting how everything looked different, till one of the staff pointed out they’d never been a wedding venue!
They had a nice time regardless.

spanieleyes · 25/02/2024 15:13

I started very young ! I went to start school when I was 4 a day early. Turned up and there was no one there. Had to go back the following day.
I blame my mum!

Turned up for a day shift at work. 0600 start. Alarm went off at 0400, left at 0430, in work an hour later.
I was supposed to be on the night shift, 12 hours later. Never lived that one down, colleagues still look at me and check their watches when I arrive for any shift.... Wink

A friend of mine arrived at the O2 for a concert at Wembley

We were at the O2 for a concert and saw a large group of women drinking in one of the bars wearing Ed Sheeran T shirts and saying how excited they were to be seeing him.

Problem is he was on at Wembley. So I don't think your friend is the only one who has done that 😬

ChanelNo19EDT · 25/02/2024 15:21

I have done it, showed up on a Sunday to watch something I had tickets for the the Saturday. They let us in but we had to stand by the bar. Was a bit shit.

BF, ex forces, saw an ex-shipmates funeral details in the regular online newsletter and decided to make the 2 hour journey to pay his respects. He arrived, just on time, at the crematorium and saw his friend standing outside!
It transpired it was his wife's funeral (who BF had never met) and ex-shipmate was really touched BF had made such a long trip.

I once went to the wrong theatre! There are 2 in Manchester and me, 7 months pregnant had to dart from one to the other and got in our seats with literally a minute to spare!

Exact same thing happened to me in Manchester. It was Horrible Histories and the play had started and we were on the front row! The actors (still in character) started talking to us and making fun of us as we tried to surreptitiously to get to our seats. My sons then aged 8 & 12 have never forgiven me!

ChanelNo19EDT · 25/02/2024 15:26

When I was a kid, my mum and Dad made this fuck up on a GRAND scale, we'd been to see relatives in Wales, and when we got to Holyhead to get on the ferry, they said, no, no, your tickets are for TOMORROW, so we laughed at ourselves and stayed in a b&B. Showed up the next day and they said, oh the clocks went forward, you're too late to get on this ferry, you'll have to try again tomorrow. I think we all felt like we'd been in holyhead for a couple of years by the time we got on the ferry

That must have been a rollercoaster for your BF!

We completely missed a Killers Concert. To be fair there had been date changes due to Covid but we just completely forgot about it

MzHz · 25/02/2024 15:29

Yup, me a day early for a flight

Up at 1am, drive for over 3 hours to airport, get to security control before check in... "Tomorrow" and tickets fling back at me.

Drove 3 hours back home and did it all again the following day.

So sorry about your tickets @Punsandroses !

AngeloMysterioso · 25/02/2024 15:33

Not me, but my best friend/maid of honour turned up at the airport for the flight to my hen do only to realise when checking in that she’d brought her old passport which was no longer valid. There was no way to get her other one to her and she couldn’t get another flight as they were all booked due to a festival happening in the city that weekend so she ended up missing the whole thing Sad

TinyGingerCat · 25/02/2024 15:40

A friend of mines parents booked to go to Paris on a weekend break from East Midlands airport but for some unknown reason believed this was the airport in Birmingham. They couldn't get from Brum to Nottingham in time so missed the entire thing

I went (as supporting adult) on a school cinema trip where the poor teacher booking it had somehow managed to book only one ticket rather than the 40 or 90 or whatever we needed (it was either one coach load or two - I seem to remember a lot of kids!). There was some complicated thing - she had booked the main trench of tickets first then just one extra one she suddenly realised she needed, and only the second transaction had gone through - not really her fault though I suppose in a perfect world she would have double checked it?

I and my friend were supervising the kids in a line outside the cinema while the teacher were inside sorting things out and I remember it was getting later and later, and it gradually dawned on us something must be wrong..... I remember the poor lass who booked it (quite a new teacher) being in tears. Just imagine that horrible moment when she realised what had happened.....

The cinema was largely booked up (must have been a new release or something) but thank God they did let us in - a lot of the kids had to sit on the floor, which must have breached health and safety but I guess things were different in those days!

It's made me double and triple check anything like that ever since......

I went to Belfast a lot for work, one time I needed to be back for a wedding party, so I made sure I got the perfectly timed flight to Manchester, almost missed it, relieved and breathless after running to the gate only to remember that I had flown out of Liverpool, my car was there. V The expensive taxi ride, awful Friday traffic, made it to the end of the wedding, missed all the good stuff, first dance, buffet etc everyone was drunk.

My dad…

He was working abroad, alone while my mum stayed working in the UK. He was living for the summer at our holiday home.
As a late teen and with my BF I flew out, as planned, to stay with him.

After waiting at the airport, early hours of the morning and realising he had forgotten to pick us up, we got a taxi to the house.

We surprised him….. he was in bed with another woman…

The early morning arrival must have got him confused with the date….

muckytrabs · 25/02/2024 15:47

Arrived at check in for an early flight to Spain with my young son, first time I'd taken him away post separation. Got our passports out in the check in queue and realised they were both my son's.

PastTheGin · 25/02/2024 15:49

We had a lovely French exchange student over and planned a day out in London. I had booked an escape room for all of us. We arrived on the Saturday, I had booked for the Sunday. Went into London twice, at least we didn’t miss it.

Something tells me the story didn’t end there!!! 😯

A friend of mine booked a week long break in a rural cottage. Had a lovely week. On their penultimate day they had an early start for a long hike.

Hours later when they were back within mobile reception, and saw a zillion missed calls from the company they hired the cottage from.

Turned out the cottage was hired from Friday to Friday, and they thought it was Saturday to Saturday. So they had missed one whole day at the start and then had to hotfoot it back to throw stuff in cases while the next set of holiday makers waited in the car. Not quite the relaxing end to the hol they anticipated!
