Walking first thing in the morning

I want to start walking first thing in the morning but what's stopping me is when should I shower . I always wake up feeling stinky and have a shower first thing every day. For those that exercise early do you shower before and after ? Maybe I'm overthinking it and could just shower and put on extra deodorant after the walk . Interested what anyone else does

Shower after! The fresh air will help you feel awake and you won't mind being a bit stinky once you get going.

Deliadidit · 25/02/2024 12:24

Always after.

Wake up, put on whatever clothes come to hand, big winter walking coat, make tea, grab dog, nice long walk, come back and shower.

Afterwards, helps worked muscles relax too.

After, it doesn't matter if I'm stinky as I'm just out walking on my own! I just throw the day before's clothes on so that I don't get fresh clothes dirty.

Unless you’re one of those people who doesn’t sweat at all from moderate exercise I’s shower after your walk. Otherwise you’ll be showering twice in a couple of hours!

I walk a couple of morning a week. I have trousers and a jumper that I keep to one side just for that. Clothes on and out the door. I shower etc when I get back. I go at 6am and it’s quiet where I live so I almost never see anyone.
It’s lovely, especially in the summer when the sun is up, you have the world to yourself.

devildeepbluesea · 25/02/2024 12:33

I walk the dog then exercise most mornings. I sometimes don’t get the chance to shower til lunchtime, but I’d never shower beforehand, what a waste of water and energy!

I totally get this - I don't feel right unless I have a shower first thing. It's just a walk, would you get so sweaty you'd need a shower afterwards ?

Prawncow · 25/02/2024 12:35

In the summer, when it’s going to be a hot day, I’m out with the dog before 6am. I have all my dog walking clothes and boots laid out the night before and I once I’m dressed I do my teeth, cleanse, moisturise, put on sunblock and wake up the dog. I’m usually out walking for 5-10 minutes before I feel fully awake! Once I’m home I feed the dog and then shower and dress for the day.

If you’re walking briskly for exercise, yes. I “just” walk but scoot along at top speed, training for a walking marathon later in the year. I sometimes pass slow joggers. Can get very sweaty.

Supersimkin2 · 25/02/2024 12:41

Shower at night? You sleep better and you’re cleaner for longer.

Rosecoffeecup · 25/02/2024 12:55

I'm the same as you, wake up stinky and would never leave the house without a shower, UNLESS it's for exercise. Get up, put scruffy clothes on and then shower once you're back home

rubyredknowsitall · 25/02/2024 12:57

I don't consider walking exercise exactly - it's how I used to get to work etc. I'm an immediate shower person too - usually if it's proper cardio (running etc) I'll shower both before and after

Pipeskeepleaking · 25/02/2024 12:58

No need to wash after a walk! Otherwise most people would need to wash as soon as they get to work…

EveryOtherNameTaken · 25/02/2024 12:58

Just get up and go out straight away. You'll feel great then come back and shower.

And do some stretches in the shower when your muscles are all nicely warmed up

Always shower first thing . Have never felt it necessary to shower after a walk 🤷‍♀️

ShufflingAlong · 25/02/2024 13:05

I have exercise/dog walking clothes. I change into them, do my exercise. Get back, shower and put normal day clothes on.

My exercise clothes get used for a few days before they are chucked on the wash pile. Yes I know by MN standards that means I am minging 😁

There’ walking and there’s walking.

It’s weird, when I used to walk to the train station, even on a warm day, I wouldn’t dream of having a shower at work.

But now I WFH I do get up, do a gentle 15 walking exercise following a YouTube video, next walk on my walking pad or do a short walk outside and then either way once I finish, I shower afterwards before I log on to work.

If you are able to shower straight after the walk, I say wake up and walk first thing, then shower so you don’t get distracted or delayed and you’ll have a nice warm shower to look forward to when you’re back from your morning walk.
