Is the Marius character in Les Miserables supposed to be unlikeable?

It's year since I read the book so can't remember how he's portrayed in that but just watched the film and he's bloody awful.

Aside from the simpering and wetness he's all for the revolution and up the proles but plucky Eponine is invisible to him yet he falls in love with Cosette at the merest sight of her bourgeois bonnet.

His actual proletariat mates all get slaughtered in the revolution so he goes back to his rich Grandad's house to live a life of luxury.

What an utter hypocrite.

He is a typical ‘young lover’ character, kind of similar to Romeo. He is naive, thinks he knows everything about the world, politics and love, but clearly doesn’t have a clue. Likeable maybe in a ‘little puppy is head over heels for this girl’ kind of way, but definitely not a hero or role model.

Jean Valjean is the hero and Marius is the naive, good looking young man. He gets a wake up call when his friends are killed. He's never going to get together with Eponine as she's not the same class.

yes this, him and Cosette aren't particularly likeable, imo but Marius really did believe .in the revolution and he redeems himself in the stage production with his empty chairs song.

I read somewhere that Empty Chairs was going to be cut from the musical and Michael Ball said he would quit if it wasn't reinstated.

Exactly. A complete hypocrite. Wants equality except when it comes to himself.
