Exciting thread about wheelie bins

Cornwall is clawing its way into the next century by providing us all with wheelie bins and food waste bins. We've also got a glass recycling box and three bags for paper, cardboard or plastic and tin recycling....

It's an insane amount of stuff to keep outside the front door (no back garden to speak of!).

Does anyone have CHEAP ways to make it look less like a pile of rubbish being stored out there? Wheelie bin storage / recycling is an insane price as in hundreds of pounds!

I've got a big grey shallow Keter type box which currently houses the existing recycling bags, and a normal bin next to that so it's not too bad but this looks awful!

Any suggestions? What do you do?

Define "cheap" - what's your budget?

IRealiseAndICanSee · 24/02/2024 19:18

Build a little barrier to hide them behind?

NCForQuestions · 24/02/2024 19:19

I've no Idea @freezefade , I've only just started to look at this and the idea of spending £100-500 for a wooden or plastic box to hide a bin is horrifying!

Is that what other people think is normal?!

I've seen people use trellis planters to shield them. Enjoy your new wheelie bin.

Potatomashed · 24/02/2024 19:24

wow what area of Cornwall are you in? No bins near us yet!

Potatomashed · 24/02/2024 19:25

Also honestly I think £100 for a bin store isn’t as mad as it used to be, materials have got so expensive now. If you are handy you may be able to knock something up out of scrap but we don’t tend to have much of that our way cos everyone burns it!

freezefade · 24/02/2024 19:25

I just line mine up neatly. All the houses have them so it's not like yours is going to look unusual.

WildFlowerBees · 24/02/2024 19:27

We just had our recycling storage delivered, cost £165, we could've made it ourselves I guess but there we are. Looks good, currently sitting in our hall ready to go out tomorrow.

Also, I think those plastic cabinets / bin stores are uglier and more obtrusive than the bins themselves.

NCForQuestions · 24/02/2024 19:35

@Potatomashed SE Cornwall. It's all just sitting there until we're allowed to use them in April 🙄

I was going to (quietly) call you crazy for spending that amount for a bin house, but actually those are rather nice! Much better than the plastic monstrosities. Are you able to lock them down so they don't go "walkies"?

I love these!

WildFlowerBees · 24/02/2024 20:13

@PurpleSparkledPixie ours is in a safe place but I think you probably could, we added a door so it doesn't show the bins. Ridiculous amount to spend but I am so sick of seeing recycling bins/bags. It's all very well having all these receptacles but where are we meant to keep them?!

saraclara · 24/02/2024 20:17

No-one round here has a bin store. We keep them somewhere unobtrusive (side path?) and just wheel them out on bin day. There are three wheelie bins. Black for general waste, black with green lid for recycling, green bin for garden waste

I have the same problem.

No cheap solutions as far as I can see. I'm contemplating a willow screen.
