What have I done with my keys?!?!

So on Wednesday I picked dh up from work as we only have one car and I needed it, plus his colleagues wanted to meet the new baby...

Anyway I went into the building, put my phone and keys on his desk, when we left I don't remember picking up my keys, however he is absolutely sure I unlocked the car as he never took his keys out of his pocket, and it's a push start, it wouldn't have started if my keys weren't in the car (we've tried previously when one of us has opened the car and is putting dc in/putting stuff in the boot and the other has tried to start the engine)

We got home and I realised I didn't have my keys when I got the baby out of the car.

We've looked all through the car (front and back, I was sat in the back) checked the driveway, been back to dh work to look around the carpark where we parked and walked. They weren't on his desk when he went in yesterday and they haven't been handed in at reception. Checked all the bags we had, car seat, coat pockets. Older dc's bag and coat. They've literally vanished. Luckily all that's on there is my car key, door key, gym fob and a keyring photo of elder dc, which we have other copies of, so not sentimental.

So where on earth can my keys be?!?!?

Did you get the baby out of the car seat or take the baby in with car seat?
Who opened the door?

Hummusanddipdip · 23/02/2024 10:25

Car seat came out of out the car into the house.
And dh opened the door, I remember standing at the back of the car and asking if it worth taking the wheels in as I didn't need to use the pram yesterday. But I didn't open the boot, the only place I've not looked (I think dh has) is the boot, but you've made me think of that so I'll check in there shortly.

Atomickittyxx · 23/02/2024 11:15

Have you checked the side storage on the car door? I've accidentally dropped things in there before.

WeeOrcadian · 23/02/2024 11:19

Last time I lost keys, they were in the fridge door

Don't ask, I don't know either.

ShipshapeShore · 23/02/2024 11:23

My car key turned up in my shoe I had been wearing when I last lost it!

JackThayer · 23/02/2024 11:30

Mine are usually in the pram hood when I think I have searched everywhere

ohpumpkinseeds · 23/02/2024 11:34

I can't help you OP. I walked the dog on Tuesday, must have used mine to get back in the house but now can't find them anywhere!!

Heather37231 · 23/02/2024 11:35

Talk me through the push start thing.

Our car ignition has a button to start it. It works as long as the keys are close by.

Doors also open as long as key is close by.

Wouldn’t your doors have opened and car have started because your husband’s keys were near/in the car, even though still in his pocket?

Did you go to the loo in your husband’s office?

ApolloandDaphne · 23/02/2024 11:44

Have you tried to restart the car since you got back? If it starts then the keys must be somewhere in the car or nearby.

Hummusanddipdip · 23/02/2024 12:21

Yep checked the car seat, even took the booster bits out.
Side storage checked, pockets in back of seats, the gap for the buckle, centre console.

@Heather37231 I don't know how it works but the car knows which key unlocked it, so will only start of that is in the car, even stood outside the car when you press the button it flags key not detected on the dashboard. The unlock button has to be pressed on the keys to open the car. Didn't go to the loo, walked in, put keys and phone down, went to his managers office to say hi with baby, went back to his desk picked phone (and possibly keys) up then walked out reception, across the carpark in an L shape, retraced my steps outside yesterday, but didn't go into the building, I should have in hindsight.

Unfortunately @ApolloandDaphne because dh has locked the car and we only have his to open it, because of the above even if my key is in the car, it'll still start with his there.

Wish they would show up in the fridge/my shoes/pram.

I think they're still on dh desk in his office, I'll have to check in Monday when he's back in as he's wfh today.

Paid £20 for one of those tag things on amazon that allows you to tag keys with a beeper thingy.

Then if you lose them you just press the handset and they beep allowing you to locate them.

Then I lost the handset.

I lost my driving glasses once while out, I’d parked outside a restaurant and gone in to eat. When I got back to my car, I could not find my glasses. I hunted around in the car and on the ground outside but it was dark and badly lit so I could not find them. As they are not critical, I can still see the legal distance but the glasses make some things more sharp, I drove home.

Next day I searched my car thoroughly and drove back to the car park. I phone the restaurant to see if I had dropped them in there although as a rule they stay in the car but could not find them. So I had to go to the optician to get a new pair. Then about three months later I was looking for something that had fallen under my car seat and found the glasses balanced on the bar that the seat moves back and forward on - totally camouflaged!

However, I am delighted that I lost my glasses because the optician noticed some scarring on one eye and did a 3d scan to compare to a previous one, she then diagnosed that I’d had a TIA which caused the damage. I was referred to the Stroke Clinic within 2 weeks and subsequently it was confirmed that I had indeed had a TIA so now I am on medication to prevent more happening. I would not have known until my next scheduled eye test which was 18 months away.

I do hope you find your keys on your husbands desk.

Interesting.

So if you left your keys in the office your husband must be mistaken when he says he did not take his keys out of his pocket. Maybe he absent-mindedly pressed the unlock button with the keys still in his pocket?

If he is not mistaken, your keys must have been in the car when you got home. So they are still there or in the house attached to a bag or clothes.

also, if he is not mistaken, you must have pressed the unlock button. I think you then put key down somewhere in the car to do something else. Who was in charge of getting the baby strapped in and settled and putting buggy in boot?
I reckon they have fallen down under the floor of the boot, where the spare wheel is.

DaisyHaites · 23/02/2024 14:00

Do you remember unlocking the car door? Because if neither of you remember then it is possible that DH did unlock it and doesn’t remember, which unhelpfully means your keys could be anywhere!

BertieBotts · 23/02/2024 14:16

Does the car lock? Ours won't lock if the keys are in the car. DH discovered this when he picked it up, put the spare keys in his rucksack, tried to go shopping and discovered he couldn't lock the car. Took it back to the dealership and they spent about half an hour trying to figure out why it wouldn't lock until another staff member said "You got it today? Where is the other key?" and solved the mystery XD

anotherchancer · 23/02/2024 17:52

Fuck knows.
I've lost mine too. They must be in the house because I drove home (not pissed!)

It's been months and they still haven't turned up, luckily I have a spare but a replacement of that is £600 Sad

Good luck!

Hummusanddipdip · 25/02/2024 13:47

Well we've pulled the car apart (figuratively) and searched everywhere and no keys in there. I did find a keyring that I guess belonged to the previous owners (little plastic 3D love heart thing) as neither dh or I have ever seen it before.
So they have to be on the desk at his work or they are gone forever.

Story of my life losing keys

PeppermintParty · 25/02/2024 14:59

Could you have put them on the roof of the car when you were strapping the baby in and then drove off? In which case they will likely be on a grass verge somewhere near his work?

Heather37231 · 26/02/2024 14:34

Any update?

Hummusanddipdip · 26/02/2024 21:34

Afraid not, they're not on, under or around his desk, he's done a carpark check and also asked the other business that shares the carpark (I thought they'd shut down and the building was empty) I haven't seen him since this morning as I've been at a funeral today and when I got hime he was doing bedtime with older dc, I think hes fallen asleep upstairs... but he sent me a message at lunchtime saying he might as well have spoken to a brick wall and will tell me more tonight 🤷‍♀️ so I'll find out more later I'm sure.

Success, I have found them!

In the hood of my coat 😳 put it on this morning to do the school run, put my hood up because it was raining... and they bashed me on the head
