Physical touch

Just watching re runs of one of my favourite shows 'Call the Midwife' where Chummy's mother is dying and she's taken her in to look after her. Yet she says in one episode that she cannot bring herself to touch her mother.
It was such a moving episode as she ended up giving her a hand massage.
It got me thinking that this is such an English thing. I went to boarding school and we definitely weren't displaying physical affection ever.
But, this week my mum has had to give me a few back and foot massages to me nude due to trapped nerves and I found myself apologising to her!
She didn't mind or care at all. It just got me thinking. Does anyone else feel a bit embarrassed about stuff like this anymore?
