Why do my clothes smell when sweating

So the last couple of days the t shirts I've been wearing have a strange smell when I sweat even though I don't smell !?!.

A couple have been 100% cotten and the others have been a mix .

It's so strange , I sweat under my arms (no b.o.smell on me)
But my t-shirts have a b.o musty damp smell ,I'm really confused because I've never had this issue before .
The clothes don't initially smell as they have been washed but the second sweat hits them they stink , my husband has said the same thing .

Do I need to clean my washing machine ? .

Do they take a long time to dry after washing ?

Ewoklady · 21/02/2024 22:23

Add vinegar into the drum when washing and also bicarbonate is good

MagpiePi · 21/02/2024 22:25

It could be sweat that hasn’t washed out properly and you only smell it when it gets warm and damp again.

I get rid of it by putting about a cup of vinegar (any cheap stuff will do) in the washing machine drum with the dry clothes, turn the machine on so a bit of water is added and it swishes around a couple of times, then leave to soak for a couple of hours or overnight. Then wash as normal.

If it's only the last couple of days. I wonder if you are sickening for something? I noticed this for a few days a few weeks ago, just before and during a virus I had.

BlackForestCake · 21/02/2024 23:20

Wash hotter.

Some do take a while but not when I put on radiators

Oh no , don't say that , I just got over that cough cold that was going around

Do you use an fragranced antiperspirant? My clothes always used to have had this weird almost sweet/musty smell in the armpits, even after washing. I changed to a odourless antiperspirant and it's made all the difference!

It just struck me that as it is so sudden, it was very similar to me. I remember noticing the unusual smell. The virus I had was extremely mild too. So the smell was there while my body was fighting it off, but I only had very mild symptoms.

What temperature do you wash your clothes at?

dementedpixie · 22/02/2024 08:22

Use bio powder (if you don't already). Run an empty hot wash. Spray the armpits with stain remover before washing. Use laundry sanitiser in the fabric softener bit of the machine

30 or 40

do you use long washes and powder?

I have 3 teens and we really notice if one uses a quick cycle to wear THAT outfit again.

CormorantStrikesBack · 22/02/2024 09:43

Get some halo sports wash. It’s expensive but you only need it occasionally. Get a bunch of whiffy tshirts and wash them together in this. It’ll sort them out for a few months.

I refuse to buy halo sports wash now as it's doubled in price and I refuse to pay £8 when a short time ago it was only £4

TikiCoconut576 · 22/02/2024 09:53

Agree with the spots wash. Works magic

CormorantStrikesBack · 22/02/2024 10:11

Sadly I’ve yet to find a cheaper alternative which works as well. All the vinegar, bicarbonate soda, etc doesn’t work as well. If it’s£8 or throw my clothes away I’ll spend the £8. A bottle lasts me a couple of years and I have a lot of gym stuff

3WildOnes · 22/02/2024 10:14

We had this when we were washing at a low temperatures with non bio.
I now occasionally put the dettol laundry cleanser in with a wash and the smell has gone and never come back.

3WildOnes · 22/02/2024 10:17

Halo and dettol wash both work the same in my experience but dettol is significantly cheaper.

CormorantStrikesBack · 22/02/2024 10:38

Never tried the dettol wash so when I run out I’ll get more. I bill bought some halo before the price jump and still got some.

freezefade · 22/02/2024 12:22

Chocolate2020 · 22/02/2024 09:35

30 or 40

That's the answer then. 30 degree washes will leave sweat in your clothes.

Rather than putting extra chemicals in, just wash at 40.

Loubilou23 · 22/02/2024 16:32

Dettol Laundry Cleanser will sort this
