What happened in the House of Commons tonight?

I'm struggling to understand what is going on and would be grateful is someone can explain to me in simple terms.

Why were Labour worried about the safety of MPs?

Why were the SNP unhappy?

Why were the Tories unhappy?

What's likely to happen next?

Are MPs who don't take a Pro-Palestinian stance really putting their lives at risk?

Now, imagine they had something with actual effect to agree to and vote on!
All this for a cease fire statement!
I cannot comprehend what is going through Starmer head regarding Israel- Gaza. He is making a great effort to present himself as a bully, unable to lead and utter chaos lover. Basically, the same same thing we already have with the tories.
I think, at this point, Labour should start looking into replacing him pronto. Or they will actually lose, as unbelievable as that is!

I have a theory that Starmer is doing his level best to lose the election.
This is an horrendous situation, completely anti democratic- and compromising the impartiality of the speaker. It is reflecting terribly on the Labour Party. It reminds me of the sinister woke bullies in the nhs going after the truthful whistle blowers, the powers to silence and be silenced. Dark days.

It is reflecting terribly on the Labour Party.

It’s reflecting terribly on all the parties. The entire episode is a stain on parliamentary democracy.

BIossomtoes · 22/02/2024 17:48

It was a perfectly reasonable and logical assumption. If not Tory definitely something right wing. I should have said that.

So because I think that Starmer is hopeless, I must be right wing. Ok then...🙄

I thought Salmon Rushdie was over egging the threats to sell books once upon a time. There are some very disturbed people out there who latch onto a cause

What? Who is finished? Who is going to behead anyone?

Are you actually serious?

David Amess (MP) was killed by an Islamic extremist.

PC Keith Palmer was killed while on duty at Westminster. Alongside two other people. By an Islamic extremist.

Eh? Please show me where I mentioned conspiracy? Where have I said anything about who the met and social workers and who they do or don't investigate? I just asked the following:

Who is finished? Who is going to behead anyone?

What is disgusting about asking that?

EasternStandard · 22/02/2024 18:30

When people say there’s a serious threat due to this vote where do they think it is coming from?

What are you talking about, ‘people’? The Speaker of the House of Commons has said where the threat is coming from.

There’s no way we should bend and limit democratic procedures, and Starmer was trying to avoid a huge rebellion in his own party but if people think threats are occurring then look at who by, but more importantly why

I know we’re not alone in facing massive issues, many countries are, but we can’t lose proper process due to it

Yes I am. The death of David Amess and Keith Palmer at the hands of extremists were terrible, but they are very very rare, thank god. As was the murder of Jo Cox at the hands of an extremist of a different type.

There are not hordes of people running around waiting to behead MPs as pp suggested..

TooOldForThisNonsense · 22/02/2024 18:39

I find the calls for Hoyle to resign pathetic and opportunistic.

Does no one get to make a mistake these days and get to keep their job?

Over an issue of no consequence either, as neither side gives two hoots what the U.K. Parliament says about a ceasefire

And you know this how? It is clear that many MPs have received death threats.

So enough of a threat to alter parliamentary process but those events were ‘very very rare’

So why change process?

I know that MPs have had death threats, which is terrible, obviously. I have not said this doesn't happen.

Hoyle has said it was a mistake to do so.

You seem to be coming at it from both angles

Hoyle changed process due to threats

But when talking about who is actually threatening it’s very rare

IClaudine · 22/02/2024 18:53

I did not say threats to MPs in the UK were rare. I said murders of MPs in the UK are rare. As are beheadings in the UK.

But if you want to twist it all, fill your boots!
