UTI or not advice - final day of antibiotics and frequency started :(

Hi,

I’ve had a bad history of UTI in the past, which was then referred onto urologist and diagnosed painful bladder syndrome. This all happened as I got a UTI which assumed may have been from paddling pool sitting in swimsuit, the first round Trimeporim didn’t work so went back and was prescribed Nitrofurtain. I think after this I felt better but I still didn’t feel right as then started noticing whenever I ate spicy food things would flare up and just increased awareness etc. Then that year took a cold and took lemsip which then ended up with retention issues. It just felt like things weren’t right after that uti. For retention I found Dmannose and things improved on that I believe. For few years now things have been okish odd flare ups and dmannose treats it and Through pregnancy I was scared of getting UTIs as although Nitro worked in a way I really struggled with thrush and eating for months i’m sure I ended up with espohagus thrush from it so had a fear since of taking them! Pregnancy and birth was fine. Now a year later and my period ended and I felt like I was crampy there and more awareness. I held off and took dmannose as usual. Think done this for a week as hoped it was just relating to period in a way and would go especially as thursh history I’m hesistant. Once that wasn’t helping went to doc and they prescribed Nitro but I then got the fear so they changed the script to co amoxo (something) but urine got sent off and like last time came back negative. For few days before meds I felt ticklish inside bladder (not painful or sore just tickly and it wasn’t on peeing) this seems to have settled and so I thought things were inproving but last night day 2 frequency happened and was needing a lot at night. Its my final day (day 3) and the frequency has me worried if it’s either just slow working or that its not a UTI. They gave me this in IV form after birth which had no side effects thats why I liked this one :( (co amoxolav)
I’ve no pain on peeing was more just the cramp then the ticklish sensation along with frequency.

in my 20s

I think you probably know your own body best and if it feels like a uti flaring up again it probably is. Sounds like you need an appointment to talk everything through and get the right treatment but if your GPs is anything like mine that will be near impossible.

I'm also on last couple of days of antibiotics for a uti and I don't think it has cleared. Was feeling much better yesterday but long drive to and from work seems to have made it flare up again. I am going to drop a urine sample at the GPs tomorrow and see what comes back. I am dreading it coming back full force and ending up in agony and stuck in bed without antibiotics.

Sorry you’re going through the same, just feel there should be so much more for treatment for UTIs instead antibiotics that sometimes don’t even do the job and resistance:( I just feel my GP might pan me off as culture said negative which is so frustrating

That is my fear too. Apparently their tests are only about 50% reliable, so lots of false negatives. If your wee is too diluted it won't show. I know from experience if I get antibiotics fast and a decent amount (7-10 days), it will knock it on the head, if not this could limp on for months. I don't think it is taken seriously enough. I think there are loads of women suffering chronic pain because of this. Hope yours clears up soon!

I don't understand why you got the fear with nitro?

UTIs are awful and antibiotics are the proper treatment. I always ask for a longer course as the 3 days never shifts it for me.

I'm so sorry. I used to get frequent UTIs in my 20s and worryingly had another one fairly recently. You feel like you are losing your mind.

Only a long course of antibiotics ever worked for me. And having a wee straight after sex.

My last UTI didn't give me a burning sensation but I constantly felt I needed a wee. My doctor said it was stress as it's unusual in your 50s.

Push back to your doctor. I hope you are soon well.
