Family board games

I'd love some recommendations for family board games please that I can play with my three children (14, 11 and 7, although the 7 year old often gives up half way through or just prefers to watch).

Ones we have enjoyed recently are:

  • Catan, although it is generally only my eldest that wants to play this so would love something similar that is a 2 player game so that he and I could just play it.
  • game of life
  • Cluedo
  • Scotland yard
  • Ticket to ride London

What are your family's favourite board games?

Blokus is great and would work well with those ages.

purpleme12 · 20/02/2024 21:11

Uno
Rummikub
Cluedo
Blokus
Exploding Kittens
Snakes & Ladders
Ludo
Mine is 10. There's probably more but that's all I can think of at the minute

TeaKitten · 20/02/2024 21:12

Not board games but card games
All the versions of uno
exploding kittens
throw throw burrito (it’s physical tho)

Oh And two more- herd mentality and The Cat game which is a bit like Pictionary but with pictures of cats. Have played both with a group of kids ranging from 5 to 16 and all enjoyed them

I've not heard of that one before, I'll have a look. Thanks

Blokus and Pandemic are big favourites here. Also love Where in the World and Mapominoes.

Icedlatteplease · 20/02/2024 21:16

Carcassonne
Ticket to ride (probably night for 7 year old)
Santorini
Whitehall
Cash and guns
King of Tokyo
Machi koro
Sushi go
Terror in meeple city

ADVICENEEDED987 · 20/02/2024 21:17

We have uno and exploding kittens, the kids all enjoy those. We have mapominoes too although haven't played it for ages, I'll have to dig that one out. I've looked at pandemic a few times before and wondeed if it would be a good one to get.

Yes pandemic is fab. Just fell out of out favour here since the actual pandemic!! It suddenly felt very wrong

NorthernPoppetPrincess · 20/02/2024 21:19

Family version of Cards Against Humanity. Ours love it.

CharlyBird · 20/02/2024 21:19

We like The London Game and Phase 10 (although that's a card game).

LittleOwl153 · 20/02/2024 21:22

Hitster- a Spotify based card game.

A new one on me found in Costco at christmas.

AinsleyHayes · 20/02/2024 21:22

For a two-person Catan-like game I highly recommend Jaipur.

Letterbix · 20/02/2024 21:22

We like:
Codenames
Ravine
Dobble
Poetry for Neanderthals
Pandemic
Labyrinth (the one based on the film, not the maze building one)
Zombicide

ODFOx · 20/02/2024 21:24

The card game SET is a great leveller: my 6 year old beat us all one year.
Labyrinth is good for all ages too.

Thanks, I'll have a look at this one then as my eldest always wants to play catan but his sister often doesn't want to and then we can't (I suspect she refuses to play just to annoy him!). Something similar that can be played with just 2 players would be great

Starfish1021 · 20/02/2024 21:27

Card games: taco, cat, goat, cheese pizza, sushi go, skulls and roses, Memoarrr

Boardgames: Castle panic, labyrinthine

It’s a card rather than a board game but has similar mercantile principles!

bibblybop · 20/02/2024 21:36

Quirkle and Dobble are huge faves in our family

Does he / do you know that there is a two-player card game spin-off of Catan? It’s called The Rivals of Catan.

7 Wonders is a big hit with us and it has lots of expansion packs
Mahjong, for four players
Catan
Takenoko
Brass Birmingham (for the older ones)
Quacks of Quedlingburg
Sheriff of Nottingham
Ticket to ride, Europe
Wingspan
Carcassonne
Pandemic

We are very into board games in our house!

R41nb0wR0se · 20/02/2024 21:38

Definitely Carcassonne - suitable for 2+ players and there are loads of extensions
And consider photosynthesis - fun and very pretty!

Dobble is the best!

Mine likes online Ludo

ADVICENEEDED987 · 20/02/2024 21:52

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far. I'm hoping to start a tradition of Sunday afternoons being a board game afternoon with the kids but we were getting a bit fed up playing the same ones over and over!
