What's good from Sainsburys?

I'm usually faithful to Tesco but I'm bored and want to try sainos.

What's good? What should I try?

Thanks!

I like the Stamford Street basic frozen sweetcorn. I don't like it too sweet, and other shops' cheapo sweetcorn can be a bit on the tough side.
YY to the apple hot cross buns.
The Taste the Difference baking potatoes are good.

On the whole I find it cheaper than Morrisons, which is the only local alternative. I buy most things from Aldi, though. I start to hyperventilate at the checkout if I let DH have the final say and do the lot in Sainsbury's.

I do a Sainsbury’s shop about 3 times a month and Tesco once a month and pop into Aldi about twice a month. I find Sainsbury’s has better options for certain specific items eg. Their Jasmine rice, Dark chocolate chip for baking , or natural peanut butters - but there’s some products my Tesco does better. And I agree with pp about Sainsburys new vaccuum bags of beef mince. Wasn’t keen so never buy mince from there now.

We used to have a nearby M&S and I’d go twice a week. Now it’s moved and it’s too far for me to walk and I don’t drive, but otherwise I’d probably be going there more often than Sainsbury’s as I think it’s better quality for the price.

I do still find Sainsbury’s better quality food than Asda though, but you pay for it.

Fish cakes
Knickers (better than M&S)
Scotch eggs

Sainsburys own brand tomato sauce. Excellent stuff, much nicer than H57 at a fraction of the cost. Jam doughnuts are delish, so are the cookies next to the doughnuts.
Sainsburys own brand washing powder and liquid, both really good and I haven’t bought branded stuff for years.

My local store which is quite a large one, has a great patisserie counter- lots of lovely sweet treats on there. The strawberry tarts are lovely as are the salted caramel choux buns.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 20/02/2024 23:13

Own brand fig rolls.
The seeded ready sliced bread.
We eat a lot of pulses (DD is kinda veggie) & the own brand beans and pulses in tins are good.
Tomato passata.
Taste the Difference Macaroni cheese.
I've been using their washing pods recently. They do the job & are half the price of my usual pods.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 20/02/2024 23:14

Oh and the Red Label Tea!

Spicy tomato and lentil soup in the fridge section. Moroccan olives in a jar. Fresh pesto.

Amazing soup. Nothing beats it!

Cherryflowers · 21/02/2024 00:01

The custard doughnuts are banging!

colouringindoors · 21/02/2024 00:33

Their Taste the Difference wines are excellent.

Regular Sainsburys own brand tinned plum tomatoes are brilliant, come in a really thick tomato sauce, more like passata. Better than any Italian brand ones.

A random one: their fresh chicken and sweetcorn soup 😋

Watchthedoormat · 21/02/2024 00:51

Family-sized lemon Tart from the chiller
Own brand tea-,bags.

I'd avoid the pizzas. The ones in the fridge are tasteless. Base, sauce and cheese taste of nothing.

Their plants. I bought a couple of hyacinths in pots for the windowledge - £3 each and they are beautiful. Far superior to other shops.

Yes! Tesco flowers and plants are terrible, sainsburys are fabulous.

Also, if you like a dark Terry's chocolate orange they have them consistently in my local sainbos. I'm not a fan but they ate DH's fave so I'll always pop in for one for his bday, fathers day etc.

And I like thier taste the difference quiches and salad pots

EcstaticMarmalade · 21/02/2024 03:25

DH is pretty fond of their crispy chilli beef. I liked it too before I gave up eating meat.

Their crinkle cut gherkins taste like McDonald's ones

Omg they absolutely do!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/02/2024 07:50

It's my favourite supermarket for clothes

EndlesslyDistracted · 21/02/2024 08:10

We do our main shopping there, it is always very busy, its a big one in the town centre but with free parking, the others apart from small M&S and Iceland are all out on retail parks on the edges of town and not as convenient. The staff are pleasant and helpful. It's hard to go wrong with Taste the Difference and I agree the clothing and home ranges are excellent.

muddyford · 21/02/2024 08:19

Red Label tea bags
Flowers
Fresh soups
TTD almost anything, including meals in the deep freeze
Mayonnaise, half the price of Hellmanns.

madeinmanc · 21/02/2024 09:19

I read that the organic mayonnaise is not ultra-processed.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 21/02/2024 09:22

I recently discovered their tuna steaks in brine, only a few drops of water to drain, unlike other brands where you practically lose the whole tin down the sink.

Back21970 · 21/02/2024 09:24

The Indian food range is good, especially the chicken biryani and samosas.

They has a great Valentines dine in last week too for £15 but probably too late.

pinesofrome · 21/02/2024 09:36

Sainsbury's Raspberry Coulis, Taste the Difference 250g
Sainsbury's Sweet Balsamic Dressing, Be Good To Yourself 250ml

MyNameIsBatty · 21/02/2024 09:44

I go occasionally for their range of jarred mezze dips and vine leaves etc. They stock odysea who do some lovely aubergine dips. They also have green onion crisps in the Eastern European section which are my favourites and stock marmite peanuts which i can't get in Tesco. I always find their bakery good too.

CoQ10 · 24/02/2024 21:35

I've had to ring Sains customer complaints for second time in two weeks because of rotten veg that was well within its bb date.

Every shop I've done in the last few months has resulted in my throwing something away that's inedible- rotten satsumas, black bananas, brown avocado, brown garlic, yellow mange tout....

A packet of sugar snap peas I opened today was full of brown liquid. It was disgusting. I'm moving to Tesco or Waitrose. Weighing each up.
