What sweet item do you usually order in cafes?

Personally I love a Portuguese custard tart, cinnamon whirl or brownie(But no gluten free brownies please.) A nice bit of cake(no dried fruit) is very welcome too but I find it hard to get decent cake now that doesn’t involve too many flavours or bloody biscuits on top.

What’s your sweet item of choice l?

Love a Portuguese tart, or an almond croissant. Nothing with icing, or anything chocolatey. I do enjoy a fruit cake or toasted tea cake too.

StephanieSuperpowers · 18/02/2024 14:02

An éclair, if you're offering, thanks. But only if they have ones with the chocolate that cracks, not ganache.

FourEyesGood · 18/02/2024 14:03

Carrot cake (but not enough places offer it).

Cake usually.

Comedycook · 18/02/2024 14:04

If I go to the posh patisserie, I go for a Paris Brest...it's incredible

Sirzy · 18/02/2024 14:04

Millionaire shortbread

Ellmau · 18/02/2024 14:04

Or sometimes scones.

Comedycook · 18/02/2024 14:05

Otherwise I like a lemon tart

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 18/02/2024 14:06

Carrot cake, lemon drizzle cake or coffee cake please.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 18/02/2024 14:06

Whatever is gluten free and not a brownie. So, usually, nothing 😟

GellerYeller · 18/02/2024 14:06

Scones, tarts au citron or carrot cake for me please! I tend to prefer fruity things over chocolate though. You don’t see enough lemon curd tarts for my liking!

Mrsjayy · 18/02/2024 14:07

Millionaire shortbread

yes usually this Is what i would have. if its Costa I get their Lemon tart 😋

Tempnamechng · 18/02/2024 14:07

Coffee and walnut cake or millionaire's shortcake 😋

Mintearo7 · 18/02/2024 14:08

cake to share if two of us. Otherwise toasted tea cake or croissant if they are warm.

Allthescreens · 18/02/2024 14:08

Usually something with dried fruit - pain aux raisins, raisin toast, fruit cake. Or maybe cherry bakewell. Occasionally millionaire's shortbread or flapjack. If with the 3 DC, will get 2 packs of toffee waffles, so we can have 1 each & it's not too expensive.

GellerYeller · 18/02/2024 14:08

Ooh I’d forgotten coffee and walnut cake and now I really want a slab!

Fakingitnotmakingit · 18/02/2024 14:08

First choice is a cheese scone, failing that, anything that is made with real lemon or rhubarb.

Echobelly · 18/02/2024 14:08

I'm usually up for a pain au chocolat

AlwaysTakeTheWetherWithEwe · 18/02/2024 14:09

Sincere sympathies. I always feel so sorry for people with coeliac disease in cafes because brownies are almost always the only option and it’s shit.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 18/02/2024 14:09

Oh yes to the Portuguese tart and cinnamon swirl. Also carrot cake or a Bee sting. Nothing really chocolaty.

CJ4713 · 18/02/2024 14:09

I rarely have anything sweet in a cafe, because I'm normally there for lunch with a drink.
I like a Portuguese tart though or a Paris Brest as someone else said 😋

Itwasfinetillitwasnt · 18/02/2024 14:12

Lemon drizzle, fruit cake or a fruity flapjack.
We often eat gluten free as dc is coeliac we have a local cafe who's cakes are all gluten free and dc can never decide because their just not used to so much choice.

VHS1981 · 18/02/2024 14:12

Costa:
love their Almond, Raspberry Bakewell slice
National trust
a cream tea but swap drink for a coffee
other places:
banana and walnut
lemon drizzle
Victoria sponge

HangingOnJustAbout · 18/02/2024 14:13

Whatever they have that is most likely to be made with real ingredients not starch and corn syrup and emulsifiers.

It's bloody hard. Our local place has gone down the impress route with massive cakes which look anazing and taste horrific. Everyone else seems to like them though.

Freshly made scones are usually a safe bet, a fresh cream éclair, pavlova or very dense fruit cake. I love a cheesecake but so few places make them without crappy ingredients.

EndlesslyDistracted · 18/02/2024 14:14

I rarely bother now because I have been disappointed so often. Never in Costa or similar, I’d rather have a croissant. But first choice in a proper teashop with homemade cakes would be millionaire’s shortbread.
