What sweet item do you usually order in cafes?

Personally I love a Portuguese custard tart, cinnamon whirl or brownie(But no gluten free brownies please.) A nice bit of cake(no dried fruit) is very welcome too but I find it hard to get decent cake now that doesn’t involve too many flavours or bloody biscuits on top.

What’s your sweet item of choice l?

Millionaire shortbread

or Coffee Cake if I can ever find it without walnuts. That would be my first choice, but it is difficult to find.

FlippyFloppyShoe · 18/02/2024 14:21

Cake. Victoria sponge or carrot or coffee, lemon drizzle, cherry and almond. Not chocolate cake but sadly that always seems to be the default in a lot of places.

GellerYeller · 18/02/2024 14:22

@newname, not a cafe but M and S used to do a lovely coffee Swiss roll.
Can I also add once again that plonking a jammy dodger/bueno/Biscoff on top of a cake is bonkers to me. I either want cheesecake/cake OR a biscuit. Not half a Daim bar stuck out the top of my dessert!
No offence to those who love them.

RaraRachael · 18/02/2024 14:22

Usually a cheese scone. I'm keeping a tally of the best ones in the area.
If I fancy something sickly then some sort of traybake like aero, crunchie, creme egg etc. A local place does ones that are so big and sickly that I can only manage a half - and I've got a very sweet tooth!

bakermummy21 · 18/02/2024 14:28

Pecan danish, coffee cake, lemon drizzle or a cherry bakewell slice

CheersToMe · 18/02/2024 14:29

Not sweet but cheese scones are the best.
Or an almond croissant.
Coffee and walnut cake.

aitchteeaitch · 18/02/2024 14:32

Millionaire's shortbread, Victoria sponge cake, lemon tart, custard Danish, cheese scone (not sweet but hey ho), pecan plait, chocolate or coffee gateau.

I want cake now. 😍All the cake.😂

swashbucklecheer · 18/02/2024 14:32

Oh more of a tray bake here - rocky road, mint slice, raspberry ruffle, fifteen, rice crispy square, millionaire shortbread. 😋

taxi4ballet · 18/02/2024 14:34

In the old Patisserie Valerie days their chocolate gateau was awesome. Pity they lost the plot.

Hummusandstuff · 18/02/2024 14:46

Flapjack please. No chocolate.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 18/02/2024 14:49

Lemon drizzle but it can't be dry or a skimpy portion.

pinkpale · 18/02/2024 14:55

Paris Brest or a good meringue with cream.

Thursa · 18/02/2024 14:55

Millionaire’s shortbread, as long as it’s not massively thick
Empire biscuit
Pineapple tart

waltzingparrot · 18/02/2024 14:58

Bit of chocolate tiffin for me please, if it's one of your average coffee shops.

Avoid cupcakes at all costs, as no matter how prettily they are decorated, one mouthful is more than enough.

FabFebHalfTerm · 18/02/2024 15:02

I rarely rarely have anything as I'm super low carb, to control my diabetes. But if I do, it has to look worth it! So I'll judge at the time which looks the best. I am partial to a GOOD lemon Muffin (Tesco finest twin pack current top of list!! Back on the wagon tomorrow though 🥺)

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 18/02/2024 15:04

Lemon/orange/lime polenta cake.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 18/02/2024 15:04

Carrot cake or chocolate tiffin

Southwest12 · 18/02/2024 15:06

There used to be a coffee shop near me that had the most amazing vegan brownies super moist and squidgy and not at all sweet. Sadly they closed down. I'm not vegan but those brownies were the best.

Otherwise a nice scone with jam and cream.

merryhouse · 18/02/2024 15:14

tiffin

cakes are usually disappointing

BlueGrey1 · 18/02/2024 15:40

I don’t really have a very sweet tooth so usually a scone (heated a bit) with coffee

RokaandRoll · 18/02/2024 15:58

Crumble with custard of it's that kind of café, otherwise lemond drizzle cake or Portuguese tart.

sprigatito · 18/02/2024 16:00

I like a vanilla slice.
