What sweet item do you usually order in cafes?

Personally I love a Portuguese custard tart, cinnamon whirl or brownie(But no gluten free brownies please.) A nice bit of cake(no dried fruit) is very welcome too but I find it hard to get decent cake now that doesn’t involve too many flavours or bloody biscuits on top.

What’s your sweet item of choice l?

Carrot cake, lemon drizzle cake or coffee cake please.

This would be my order too!

PansyOatZebra · 18/02/2024 16:03

Cakesmiths ultimate carrot cake or banana and chocolate cake. A lot of cafes around here stock Cakesmiths items and they’re lovely.

Carrot cake or cheesecake

Lemon drizzle cake, chocolate fudge cake or millionaires shortbread.

DottyPencil · 18/02/2024 16:07

If it's a cafe I've never been to before and might revisit, I test the waters with a plain scone with jam and cream if they claim to be 'home made'. It's surprising how many claim to be but aren't.
If I'll never be going back there anyway, I have whatever looks best on the day.

I find a selection of proper cakes and scones hard to resist. Not the common or garden chocolate / carrot / coffee flavours along with lots of creamy icing though; I'm more thinking something fruity and a bit unusual - eg apple streusel cake or blueberry and almond traybake, lemon and raspberry polenta cake, rhubarb and ginger scones etc - all those would part me with my money!

Pastel de nata
macaron
almond croissant
cruffin ❤️
or anything with pistachio in ❤️

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 18/02/2024 16:17

A scone or a chocolate cake

Cuppachuchu · 18/02/2024 16:24

I like a Chelsea or Belgian bun. Lately I've had a gingerbread man for a change.

KezzabellaB · 18/02/2024 16:27

A scone (to rhyme with cone) but only if it's not doughy and is a bit 'craggy' - think more rock bun like.
Or a piece of lemon drizzle. Or some shortbread 😋

Etincelle · 18/02/2024 16:29

A Muffin or chocolate tiffin

Beezknees · 18/02/2024 16:35

Cheesecake, brownie or lemon tart if they have them.

WhatnowMrs · 18/02/2024 16:38

Lemon drizzle for me please or maybe bakewell tart, although today I had “biscoff and latte sponge” which I’d never come across before - basically just very mild caramel and coffee flavour I suppose but nice enough.

Sidehustlequestion · 18/02/2024 16:40

A brownie, a fruit scone with cream & jam, a Victoria sponge or sometimes a pan au chocolat. I am hungry for cake after reading everyone’s answers!

SirenSays · 18/02/2024 18:22

Blueberry Muffin, lemon tart or a cinnamon roll with way too much icing.

AlwaysTakeTheWetherWithEwe · 18/02/2024 18:23

Thanks all.

Clearly I need to branch out a little!

Carrot or lemon drizzle cake. Brownie or almond croissant if the cakes have icing/toppings ++

Judellie · 18/02/2024 18:39

Coffee cake WITHOUT the revolting walnuts. So nothing usually.

GellerYeller · 18/02/2024 18:57

@KezzabellaB that’s SUCH a good point about the scones, who wants those flat, squidgy and anaemic ones that look like they came from a pack at the supermarket? They need to be special!

YogaLite · 18/02/2024 18:58

Love rock cakes...

MrsCharlieD · 18/02/2024 19:00

A cream scone or cake usually. The café at my local garden centre does amazing scones with jam and fresh whipped cream. Ooh could just eat one.

ThreeRingCircus · 18/02/2024 19:09

A cheese scone with butter or perhaps a flapjack with lots of dried fruit and seeds etc. Definitely not cake, most are really disappointing and over-sweet.

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 18/02/2024 19:12

Croissant or brownie. If I’m in Ole and Steen then a cinnamon social 🤤

Time40 · 18/02/2024 19:22

A rum truffle, if I can find one. They seem to be hard to find outside Yorkshire.

Sophia89 · 18/02/2024 19:28

I'd eat anything but to be selective I would say an almond croissant. None of this sharing business. All mine.
