Do all teenage boys dress the same in your area

Firstly this is not a personal dig at any child. I only have dds. Also there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the clothes I describe as in they are neither offensive nor inappropriate.

I live in the south west in a city. All the teenage boys I see out and about dress the same. They wear matching tracksuits mainly in only black, navy, dark grey or v occasionally sort of beige. They wear black puffa coats usually north face. They wear air force ones mostly or v similar looking trainers.

I haven't seen a teenage boy deviate from this in a few years now. No jeans, no colours unless it's a football strip, no dms or even converse.

They all have v similar haircuts too shirt on the sides and longer on the top with a kind of side floppy fringe.

There are some themes with the girls - baggy 90's clothes but it's nothing like as uniform as the boys.

I know fitting in with trends is a teen thing - I was one but can't help feeling the 2020's is more conformist than ever.

A friends ds who is about 17 told us he occasionally wears a t shirt to school with anime stuff he likes on it. He is told by his peers this is really 'out there' for style. He feels weird about it.

My nephews came down from the midlands at half term. They are also dressed like this. They are year 6,8 and 12.

Is this a down here thing or is rest of uk like this?

All the boys I see out and about are dressed as you describe. I expect there are many that don’t.

apwlgamgo · 17/02/2024 21:21

I won't buy mine tracksuits, but yes it's what they'd wear if they had a choice! Tracksuits are for home or working out, yep I am my mother.

Wishlist99 · 17/02/2024 21:22

Yes - London. Tho more expensive trainers than AF1 if the budget extends to it

Yes

Yep same in the midlands, I’m only in my 30’s and much prefer what boys used to wear, jeans. I just think sportswear makes them all look like chavs! That was who were wearing those clothes when I was a teenager. They look so scruffy

I don't mind tracksuits but they are for sports imo like you.

The Fluffy Edgar haircut is absolutely everywhere for teenage boys round here. I personally think it looks dreadful but undoubtedly my parents thought the same about my dodgy fashion in the early 2000s!

Years back I knew 6th form boys witg balenciagas but I don't even see that anymore

Yes. It's almost like some kind of army uniform.

DS14 dresses exactly as you describe, it’s awful. They all look the same. So boring! I tell him this, tell him it’s ridiculous he wears the same stuff as everyone else. Social media has a lot to answer for. I refuse to buy these clothes apart from the odd tracksuit for Christmas. He buys it all, fake crap, with money he’s had for Christmas/birthdays.

Paradiddlediddle · 17/02/2024 21:29

Yes but socks and sliders sometimes! With shorts in summer occasionally.
I have a 12 yo who dresses like this. He just wants to be comfortable. He doesn’t care about clothes at all.

EbbasFleet · 17/02/2024 21:29

The boys seemed to dress as you describe up to around year 11 but now DS is in 6th form it's all baggy jeans, baggy t shirts and hoodies - 1990s/ urban outfitters style for the boys.

And crocs seem to be making a comeback 😂

Darklingthrush123 · 17/02/2024 21:30

Yes boring isn’t it? Must admit my own son isn’t in this uniform but he seems to be happy to be different.

teenage girls also have a uniform

SabrinaThwaite · 17/02/2024 21:30

The Roadman look?

Not all teen boys here, but certainly a lot.

Winnipeggy · 17/02/2024 21:30

Yes, small town in Sussex - exactly the same, I happened to notice this today. When I was that age there were loads of goths/skaters/emos etc but they are a thing of the past around here. Sad really. Can I blame TikTok?

TeacherMcTeacherface · 17/02/2024 21:31

I went to a family party a few weeks ago. DS1, who is 15, was there as were some of his mates.

I genuinely couldn't find him in his group at one point. He was in a crowd of friends, all of whom were wearing black Adidas tracky bottoms, black puffa coat, white trainers and a fluffy hairdo.

It's really quite amusing..
But they are all very nice lads though. Teens get a rough press. All the lads when I was a teen had the same 90s curtains hairdo too!

BettyfromBristol · 17/02/2024 21:31

They dress exactly like that here. It's as though they have a strict uniform code.

The girls are mostly in baggy grey tracksuit bottoms with a cropped white top and lots of midriff showing. Long straight hair on every single one.

There used to be a lot more variety of styles when I was young but I suppose that if they have a uniform it is easy to choose what to wear.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 17/02/2024 21:32

Yep. DS16 and all his friends are the same and have been for a few years now 🙄

Heartshapedboxed · 17/02/2024 21:34

Yes! But I have also noticed it with teenage girls as well. Literally every group of teenage girls I see look like clones of each other and they all wear the same clothes. Hi top converse platforms, black leggings and those black puffer jackets with the furry hoods.

When I was a teenager, it was the worst thing ever if you and your mate rocked up into town wearing the exact same outfit. One of you would go home out of shame to change!

Puffinshop · 17/02/2024 21:35

I live in Iceland and I can always tell the British teenagers on a geography trip because the boys all have exactly the same haircuts. I saw a herd of them in the supermarket once and it was uncanny.

The Icelandic male teens mostly all have the same haircut as well, but it is a different one 😄

SpacePotato · 17/02/2024 21:35

Yep, same round here. With the floppy side fringe they have to constantly shake their heads to the side to get out of their eyes like they have a tick.

They also like to ride their black bikes, wearing head to toe black clothes, with no lights on, in the middle of the road, in the dark, with no hands on the handlebars whilst using their mobile phones.

Maneattraction · 17/02/2024 21:36

Yep, it’s a uniform here. I saw my DS with a huge group of friends the other day, I mentioned to DH they all looked the same - all had black tracksuits apart from my DS, who had a grey tracksuit. All had black trainers of various brands and some variation of the hairstyle you describe 😂. May add a cap, depending on weather!

DS17 has a more varied look, cargo trousers, t shirts and white trainers/tracksuit/jeans and top etc. Tbh he could wear anything and look good though (how I wish I was the same) and is confident enough not to feel he has to follow the crowd.

1TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango · 17/02/2024 21:37

Yes I've noticed certain groups of teens in our area dress like this - the roadman look is a thing and sadly they act out this way also. Not all of them of course, but a large proportion do.

My teen is thankfully happy to not follow this trend. Phew!

pinotmore · 17/02/2024 21:38

I have two teen boys and neither dress this way as they term it for 'wannabe roadmen.' Not sure what distinguishes a wannabe from a genuine roadman but that is what they say.

DS1 has no interest in clothes apart from enjoying football shirts from places he has visited/the obscure ones you get in the secret box things. Apart from that he wears plain black/navy/sludge t-shirts with black cargo trousers. He is happy to get those from supermarkets. His friends wear mixed - some tracksuits but some band t-shirts/football shirts etc.

DS2 will only wear stone-washed jeans, not skinny, and plain white t-shirts. He likes to get these items from H & M. He only likes white trainers and does want some Air Force 1s but thinks they are too expensive so is considering them further. His friends are mainly girls but he has commented they all have the Nike leggings.
