Do all teenage boys dress the same in your area

Firstly this is not a personal dig at any child. I only have dds. Also there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the clothes I describe as in they are neither offensive nor inappropriate.

I live in the south west in a city. All the teenage boys I see out and about dress the same. They wear matching tracksuits mainly in only black, navy, dark grey or v occasionally sort of beige. They wear black puffa coats usually north face. They wear air force ones mostly or v similar looking trainers.

I haven't seen a teenage boy deviate from this in a few years now. No jeans, no colours unless it's a football strip, no dms or even converse.

They all have v similar haircuts too shirt on the sides and longer on the top with a kind of side floppy fringe.

There are some themes with the girls - baggy 90's clothes but it's nothing like as uniform as the boys.

I know fitting in with trends is a teen thing - I was one but can't help feeling the 2020's is more conformist than ever.

A friends ds who is about 17 told us he occasionally wears a t shirt to school with anime stuff he likes on it. He is told by his peers this is really 'out there' for style. He feels weird about it.

My nephews came down from the midlands at half term. They are also dressed like this. They are year 6,8 and 12.

Is this a down here thing or is rest of uk like this?

Yes, my ds likes these things and that's what he asks for for Christmas and birthdays. He has only a few key pieces though, a couple of jumpers a tshirt, a jacket and the rest of his wardrobe is Nike. He will save his own money and or go halves with him.

It is expensive but that's what he likes, to begin with I wasn't convinced when he said 'but all my friends have got' and then I look around and they do!

Have a look at MA. Strum it's slightly cheaper than stone island.

pastypirate · 18/02/2024 22:58

I'm so confused about stone island. Firstly I thought it was some naff knock off brand from the 90's but now I think that's a similar but different thing.

Now I've googled it and omg the most boring clothes out of all the brands.

And I thought I knew about teen brands. Dd2 all for her white fox and so on.

Stone island was always very expensive and it was counterfeited with a lot of snidey stuff on the go.

I'm confusing it with something else. Maybe Tesco has a clothing brand with similar name.

I have one, haircut, clothes as described along with chain to set off the look. He’s currently aspires to own a seat Ibiza when he passes his test.

But I remember his dad wore bright coloured Ben Sherman shirts at the same age, had curtains and looked just as much as a sheep in the 90s.

Yes my 14 year old dresses like this with nike dri fit t shirts in every colour. He'd get his hair cut weekly if he got away with it and likes to borrow aka steal his big brother's expensive aftershave. Apparently "the neds" wear baggy tracksuits, he's still the sweetest boy, just loves his "fashion".

pastypirate · 18/02/2024 23:35

When I was a teen the boys were obsessed with drug t shirts with cartoons in them of adverts. So like the Quavers logo but it would say 'Ravers'. I think they bought them at Camden Market. Early to mid 90's. Rave culture. They also wore embroidered bomber jackets and anything that alluded to them being a dj like a record bag for a school bag.

We don’t live in the UK but teen DC commented on it on our last visit. We saw a gang of girls all in identical black leggings, white sports socks and trainers and varying colour cropped T-shirts! I grew up in the UK but we definitely wore more of a variety depending on the sub culture you associated with.

Hahaha I remember this! It wasn’t my crowd (surfers/skaters/hippy stoners) but I remember seeing a row of beige chinos with a rainbow of brightly coloured matching Ben Sherman shirts and either Nick Carter curtains or the over-gelled spiky fringe!

Still is variety in subcultures, but you don't see those subcultures hanging around the shopping centre.

I find it so interesting how many mums have noticed their sons gravitating towards Ralph Lauren lately!

I think TikTok might be influencing their fashion choices.

My DS14 used to dress like a wannabe rapper but he's recently been watching TikToks about girls being into "Ralph Lauren boys" and it deffo seems to be the catalyst for his changing.

Stone Island stuff is very expensive, can get a 2nd hand jumper on vinted for around £100, many items are over £400 new. It is related to football violence many years back in my area (not now but anyone over 40 will always comment in jest if they see kids wearing it, eg off for a fight then). Very ordinary clothing range, decent quality though.

My DS19 is a big Ralph Lauren fan. Mainly because the logo on most things is quite small and the clothing, despite the colours, is quite conservative.
I have bought some new RL but mostly eBay and Vinted. It is decent quality. He won’t wear many other labels though, for various reasons.
I’m so glad that the low slung trousers and skin tight jeans are now firmly out of fashion. It is a shame that we still see slightly overweight 30 yr olds in skinny trousers. They flatter no one. DS has been wearing 501 style jeans since 17 when his ex girlfriend discovered an old pair amongst DH’s old clothes. She encouraged DS to wear them and he set off a trend in his cohort. Ex girlfriend was one of the cool kids so no one was going to make fun of DS’s fashion choices. It’s amazing how much the girls influence the clothing choice of boys.

Sorry, in Leeds (and the North?) Stone Island is the brand of football hooligans. You see Stone Island and you avoid.

Was the same in my area (down South) about 30 years ago, definitely not now though.

AvoEgg · 19/02/2024 13:18

My 18 year old DS has been like this since he was about 15. I once waved to a boy and walked towards the group and then realised it wasn’t him. They are everywhere.

I think DS is finally gearing up to move on though (his 11 year old brother has just got the same haircut, so surely that can’t be cool!?!)

He has moved the fringe off his face a few times lately and asked what I think, and told me that he is considering a middle parting (curtains style). I encouraged this enthusiastically. It was just so nice to see his face and I was surprised by how very handsome he is, I hadn't seen his face properly for years 😄

He can’t seem to totally work up the
confidence to leave the house like that yet though… but I feel hopeful that something is about to change! He has also expressed a desire for short Ugg boots. Again, just a move away from the clumpy trainers would be a great start.

The girls though… DD and her friends ALL wear white fox hoodies, black leggings and white Nikes. A whole group of them, sometimes up to 8 of them walking around together… with varying neutral colours, so two or three of them are actually wearing the same ones. I’m sure the Nike pro shorts will be back out again too though, so they are even more “in uniform” than the boys.

DD had lovely taste in clothing up until recently, and didn’t follow the crowd at all. Year 8 changed something though.

I wish they wore coats though, North Face or otherwise, coats aren’t a thing here even when it’s actually freezing and they are walking to school.

Mine and his friends don't - they're all baggy jeans, basketball trainers, and either plain hoodies or F1 merch. DS does have the haircut at the moment, but not on purpose: he's always had it longer on top, but when he went to the barber last week to have the back and sides tidied up, he accidentally agreed to a skin fade, not realising that it was not the same as the low fade he normally has, so he currently looks like Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons. It'll grow back....
