Having all top teeth take out

Shamefullhouse · 17/02/2024 20:47

I need to make an appointment at the dentist. But im shitting it. I'm going to have my all top teeth removed in one sitting. The thing that's bothering me most is injections in the roof of my mouth

That seems pretty drastic, is it clinically required

THEMOSTREAL · 17/02/2024 21:02

Wow what is the reason for having them all removed?

AllieDeCorbeau · 17/02/2024 21:08

I had to have mine removed a couple of years ago. It wasn't pleasant, but I don't even remember it now. If your teeth are bad enough to come out, getting a nice looking (and well fitting) denture can reality raise self confidence.
It's more common than you would think. Just no one ever talks about it.

They numb you up before the injections. It's a sharp scratch at the most it's not that bad I promise.
Dentures will look perfect and honestly it will be worth it. Tooth pain is awful I really feel for you.

Most of my teeth have fell out or crumbled . I actually only have 7 teeth . They look horrible. It's not because i did not look after them. There's a name for it . But I forget what it is.

I know. I have already had all the bottom removed. It's the injection in the roof if the mouth that bothers me . I'm not scared of injections it's the fact it's the roof of the mouth.

Dentist here!
If the 7 teeth are in two or three areas of your mouth you will only need two or three small injections. They should be able to use a topical anaesthetic to take the edge of it. It really should be a minimal stinging feeling at most

I know. I can't actually wait for the end result. It will definitely be worth it. But im still shitting myself till they are out .

I hear you. Its the roof of the mouth. Just remembering what that feels like sends shivers down my spine. Have you tried a hypnosis course?

I know I feel like its the worst place to have an injection. I won't be doing hypnosis though

I had an injection in the roof of my mouth prior to root canal. If anything, it’s more like a kind of pressure … it wasn’t at all painful

Might not be helpful but I put my headphones on music playing eyes closed mouth open 🤣 I have an agreement with my dentist I will raise my hand if I need her to stop

THEMOSTREAL · 17/02/2024 21:39

I’m sorry you have to go thru this, it doesn’t sound pleasant at all, but just try and keep focussed on the end result

Would you consider sedation? It’s usually not too expensive but it is wonderful for dental procedures.

No because I need to see/know all what's going on

I've had a back upper wisdom tooth removed in the past. That was an injection in the roof of my mouth. It wasn't painful or anything, but the worst thing was the feeling that my mouth throat was closing over. It felt like everything was swelling and I didn't know if I was having an allergic reaction or something as the dentist hadn't mentioned it might feel like tht so I was starting to panic. It took a lot of reassurance from the dentist that my throat wasn't closing over and I wasn't going to die. 😂

Is that why you don't like it? I had no idea it would feel like that as I've had injections in the gum before that didn't feel the same as that.

I’ve had that injection a couple of times - once to get an upper wisdom tooth extracted, and once to get a root canal. I have a proper phobia of needles (had to be given my Covid jabs lying down in a side room!) but honestly it is over very quickly. I’m 100% comfortable with my dentist and she knows how much I hate injections, so she is very good and patient, and usually has the nurse hold my hand.

The root canal was with a private specialist my own dentist referred me to and she wrote in my notes that he would need to be mindful of the needle thing - I actually had multiple appointments with him and brought a stuffed toy to cuddle along to every one. I am 50. They’ve seen it all.

I planned a “treat/reward” after every session with the root canal specialist. I also had him give me time checks as we went along - “now we will do X and it will take around Y minutes” which I found useful.
