Car insurance questions

My car insurance currently has pleasure + business as I'm a nursing student who can be sent to more than one site and I've a part-time job where I can be sited at more than one location. This is what the insurers and uni told us to do - commuting cover didn't apply.

I finish my course mid-May. Luckily, insurance is up for renewal at the same time.

So two questions:

  1. when I change from student to nurse (eek exciting!) should I expect my premium to go up a good chunk?
  2. it takes some time for NMC registration to come through and I plan to be away visiting friends for the summer so would it be accurate to say I'm unemployed for the summer/before any job starts and does this result in a cheaper premium? Of course updating my employment status might come with an admin fee so any "saving" might not be worth it.

  1. I think you are right about the admin fee.
  2. I suspect your quote for being unemployed would be higher than you being a nurse.
  3. If your job will be at one place, then you should only need 'SDP + Commute'. However, IME, Business use for a limited number of miles barely makes any difference to the premium if included when you take the policy out, so I'm not sure you will make savings there.
  4. As a rule, being 'a student' is a negative in terms of premiums.

Thank you.

I was worried my premium might double or do something crazy.

Well, unfortunately car insurance premiums as a whole, HAVE gone up massively over the last 6 months, so almost everyone renewing anytime up to about August is likely to find their premiums increasing
