Have I been saying this word wrong my whole life?!

Just heard the word "romanticised" pronounced with a hard c. Is that how it's said?!

@Durdledore , clicked on the link and it says Kooping Koff Hmm.

The 'wh' sound doesn't have an IPA symbol but it's like when someone Scottish says 'when', 'white', 'why', 'where'...

You either hear it or you don't. I do.

Yeah that audio file is rubbish, I know.

I actually meant the bit where it says, using the International Phonetic Alphabet, how to pronounce it.

There is a bit underneath that decodes the alphabet too.

@arlequin , as I pp, You either hear it or you don't. I do.
It sounds like you don't.

To me, Wye, Why and High sound different. The difference is fairly subtle.

It doesn't matter. If you say wooping koff or hooping koff or whooping koff, people will probably understand. If you say cough as Coe or Cow or Cuff, they might not.

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2024 14:20

@Durdledore , the IPA doesn't cover everything.
There's no distinction, for example between two ways of saying a diphthong. E.g the different ways people might say new or you.

Probably best to leave it.

FWIW I say Lerner and Loewe as Learner & Low but a Loewe bag is a Lo-eh-veh bag.

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2024 14:27

@EBearhug , I think I meant naice areas. Love that part of the world. Well spotted on aspirated.
Wales and Whales is just it.

Februaryfeels · 18/02/2024 14:43

@EBearhug Thank you. I didn't know the correct term, only that I do a barely perceptible puff when I use wh

Edited

I mean, yes you can totally write the difference between new and you using phonetic transcription but yes, let’s leave it. It really doesn’t matter. Beg to differ and all that.

I rather like the idea of a hooping cuff. Might be this year's statement sleeve.

I never know how to say Miu Miu, but I'm not that bothered. I'll wait until someone corrects me.

How should I say Baukjen. I think of it as Bowk (bow like in taking a bow) Jen like in Jenny, but I may be way off.

I asked in Maje because I didn't know if it was Mazh, Mazhey or My-uh. It's Mazh.

Gieves & Hawkes is Gheevs not Jeevs. I asked in the shop as a friend had laughed and said it was Jeeves. I now deliberately mispronounce words because the 'friend' always 'corrects' me.

Looking at the IPA list upthread, and about the hearing of different sounds, some will not hear the difference between the 'i' in 'ship' and in 'sing'

I'm not a linguist and don't know is the proper expression but there is a expiration on wh

And I do say white, when and whooping cough the same

I agree about all wh words being aspirated in certain accents but whooping cough starts with a H sound

Februaryfeels · 18/02/2024 18:30

@arlequin Yes but not the way I say it - and hear people say it.

So I'm agreeing that it depends on your accent

arlequin · 18/02/2024 19:10

I would say it the same as I would say "who"

Meredusoleil · 18/02/2024 20:27

I have just heard Jeremy Clarkson pronounce the word 'protagonist' with a j sound rather than a hard g (on TV) 😯 Surely that's not correct?!?

That's just weird.

AinsleyHayes · 18/02/2024 20:39

@KirstenBlest Miu Miu is mew mew, rhymes with new. Short for Miuccia (mew-cha) Prada.

Baukjen is bow-ken (bow to rhyme with now and cow).

KirstenBlest · 18/02/2024 20:43

@AinsleyHayes , but Miuccia is Me-oocha not Mewcha
I'd say Mew to rhyme with Hugh.
Also new can be new, nyoo, noo

Why does the j not get a sound?

AinsleyHayes · 18/02/2024 20:52

@KirstenBlest Do you speak Italian? There are very few true diphthongs in the language. There are regions where speakers might emphasise the /j/ and /u/ sounds but particularly in Milan, where Prada is from, you would hear /ju/ as a so-called false diphthong.

KirstenBlest · 19/02/2024 15:12

I don't , but I'm aware that there are dialectical languages and that regional pronunciations vary.
I'm happy to say 'mew mew'.
