Have I been saying this word wrong my whole life?!

Just heard the word "romanticised" pronounced with a hard c. Is that how it's said?!

I wish every barista would learn that it’s lattay Not laartay!

It's sort of in the middle in Italian though

splatmouse · 17/02/2024 07:42

Laaaa-tay not Law-tay.

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2024 07:50

@GetWhatYouWant , I wouldn't get wound up by something like them stumbling over Rhosllannerchrugog or something, but 'Plide Coomry' every sodding time. There's no W in it.

They also tend to say Senedd as Senyth or Sen-eth.
Ugh!

Laaaa-tay not Law-tay.

Laa-teh not Lart-ay

Accident still usually axident. What about accidental?

Is it an assident when an eejit driver dings your car?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/02/2024 08:12

Who else is thinking of that TV nanny and her ‘asseptable’? 😱

OldTinHat · 17/02/2024 08:13

BirthdayRainbow · 16/02/2024 21:10

Romanti sized

Yep. Like this.

I pronounce ‘stoicism’ with a hard ‘c’, mainly because I have a slight lisp, and find it very difficult to say it the correct way.

People might find it annoying, but I like to think I’m giving them a good opportunity to practise what I preach 😂

That is admirable. (And funny.😀)

I've always thought whooping cough was pronounced with a silent 'w' but then I heard a young person the other day pronounce it as wooping cough with a silent 'h'.

I've been saying it with a w and silent h, but have been hearing medical staff say it with a silent w!

I think it should be pronounced with a soft wh- ... surely it's meant to be onomatopoeic and 'hooping' doesn't work for that.

The relief! Thank you. I'm right, he's wrong. Tbf, "he" was a man on Tiktok! But he did say it twice with a hard "c" so I had a moment of worry!

My theory - having seen a few similar videos on Instagram - is that they mispronounce words like this on purpose in the vein of going viral/to appease the algorithm gods because its likely they’ll get 100s of people commenting & correcting (people can’t help themselves!)

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 17/02/2024 09:09

There are some exceptions - like Circe is ker-kee and Cerberus is Ker-buh-rus as they are Greek names - but it's just basic phonics to my mind, c or g followed by e, i or y makes it a soft letter sound.

That's a bit depressing on the part of the guy.

amusedbush · 17/02/2024 09:22

One that had me doubting myself is "cognizant".

I would say it like COG-ni-zint (ni like nick) but I have heard two different people - unrelated, senior managers at two different workplaces - pronounce it cog-NYE-zint (like Bill Nye the Science Guy).

The first time was jarring, the second time made me wonder if I'm wrong 😅

I pronounce it your way, but I use the BrE spelling ‘cognisant’. Your pronunciation is logical if you consider other etymologically related words - cognitive, cognition, etc.

OoohLaLaLa · 17/02/2024 16:20

Thank you all. I was chatting to a livery yard owner yesterday and he pronounced the live to rhyme with thrive. Clearly just him then!

This. You say both the w and h but sort of at the same time.

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2024 16:40

I'd say Sir-see. Kyrkee if Greek
Cerberus - sirbirus

Whoops. Just take the shame and move on. Worst things happen at sea.

Who was that aimed at ?

No shame for the OP

ErrolTheDragon · 17/02/2024 16:47

Is eccentric exentric or essentric?

It's exentric if you're talking about a person, but some fitness instructors seem to say e-sentric if they're talking about the opposite of concentric exercises.

BrownSauceOnBeans · 17/02/2024 16:50

What about harbinger? Hard g or soft? 🤔

merryhouse · 17/02/2024 16:56

Well, I always used to sing harbinger like ginger and nobody ever corrected me...

singer, finger, ginger - which is it?

LunaNorth · 17/02/2024 18:06

Harbinger is a soft ‘g’.

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2024 18:13

I've only ever heard it said as harbinger.

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2024 18:20

HAR-binj-er. Autocorrect fail on pp.
