Have I been saying this word wrong my whole life?!

Just heard the word "romanticised" pronounced with a hard c. Is that how it's said?!

OP posts:
Okaygoahead · 16/02/2024 21:51

Moh-ski-noh

LunaNorth · 16/02/2024 21:52

Supernanny gives ‘acceptable’ two soft c’s (does that need an apostrophe? I would think definitely not, but ‘cs’ looked wrong as well).

Asseptabow.

While we're talking about hard and soft C's, is Moschino 'mo-she-know' (with mo as in mop, not farah) or 'moss-key-no'.

I always thought it was the first one but heard it pronounced the second way on TikTok recently and now doubting myself. Not that I have cause to say, or even think about, Moschino often.

Moschino is Italian so it's Mosk-ino.
Bruschetta is Brussketta not Brush-etta

Chino is from Spanish, so it's tcheeno

I'd forgotten all about that incorrect pronunciation of hers, it used to grate on my ears.

It’s Moss-key-no. It’s an Italian surname.

There's a funny clip of a kid correcting her pronunciation of that word it's hilarious 😆

Soft c - row-man-tiss-eyesed

I am worried I’ve been pronouncing livery (horse based not like an organ) wrong all my life after a chance conversation.

Grateful for thoughts!

Liver( as in the organ) - ree, that's how they pronounce it on The Archers anyway, given that's on the BBC it must be correct.

I'm wondering if some words with cc in which cc is or was pronounced like x, (that is, before i or e) are perhaps morphing toward a ss pronunciation based on what I sometimes hear.

Flaccid was once pronounced flaxid, not flassid.
Accept is still usually axept, proof being that it gets misspelt 'except'. But as you've heard, acceptable can sometimes sound like asseptable. Maybe the longer forms of the word get the ss pronunciation first?
Accident still usually axident. What about accidental?
Vaccine is vaxine. Hence 'antivax'.
Success, probably suxess, but is successful pronounced sussessful?
Is accessible axessible or assessible?
Is succinct suxinct or sussinct?
Is accessory axessory or assessory?
Is eccentric exentric or essentric?
Etc.

KirstenBlest · 16/02/2024 22:27

... given that's on the BBC it must be correct. If only.
They seem to get Plaid Cymru wrong.

Yes their pronunciation of Welsh words isn't great but they do know how to pronounce English ones.

Ex - tror - dinary
Extra - ordinary

LuckyOrMaybe · 16/02/2024 23:33

I've just been playing around with accept now. For me, ac-sept is slightly but meaningfully different to ax-ept - which I would say more like ac-zept. Voiced z vs unvoiced s sound.

I've just spent a happy 5 minutes mispronouncing these :).

Film yourself, and upload to TikTok. Get your own back.

I pronounce ‘stoicism’ with a hard ‘c’, mainly because I have a slight lisp, and find it very difficult to say it the correct way.

People might find it annoying, but I like to think I’m giving them a good opportunity to practise what I preach 😂

You're just going with the proper Greek pronunciation as per its origins. It even has an actual K: Στωικισμός (Stoikismos). Everyone else is wrong, you're right Wink

AngeloMysterioso · 17/02/2024 00:58

Here’s one a lot of people get wrong-

L’Occitane

lock-see-tan

NOT locky-tane.

FloofCloud · 17/02/2024 03:43

Soft c
My friend does this hard c for miscellaneous- miss-kill-aneus... drives me potty 🤪

Do you know what, I thought that at first, but when I checked the OED, it was a soft ‘c’ !

You’ve cheered this little nerd right up! 🤓

Thank you 😀

I wish every barista would learn that it’s lattay Not laartay!

No, you’re right and they’re wrong, BUT but i can see a whole new hobby in fucking with pronunciations like this to see who i can get to go along with it.

respectable - with a soft c
Diligent - with a hard g
hollow - with a silent h.

the possibilities are endless!

I'm from the north we say 'ollow' for hollow

WomanOfSteel · 17/02/2024 07:25

DonttouchthatLarry · 16/02/2024 21:24

Livery rhymes with shivery.

I always think delivery. 🙂 I started reading old books when I was a young teen so there was loads of words I pronounced incorrectly.

Anxious and anxiety. Weird.
