Driving licence question

When I moved in October 2020, I renewed my driving licence. I've had to show it as ID today and I checked the expiry date. It expires in August this year! That's less than 4 years..... I have no medical issues so was wondering why I didn't get a full 10 years?

Did you only update the address? I believe if you only change that then the expiry date is the same.
I think the 10 years date only changes when you supply new photo etc due to expiration date. Not certain but I recall hearing this somewhere.

Did you renew or just change your address?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 16/02/2024 19:15

Because it’s the photo but that expires. They don’t re start the photo date from when you move address. So if you updated your photo ten years ago, it will still expire at the same time even if you moved house in the meantime, eg if you moved two years ago, the photo card expire doesn’t reset two years ago for another 10 years as that would mean you would have had the same photo for 18 years. The reason being that people do change facially in ten years.

Just to be ridiculous, what haems if you move address with 2 months left in your driving licence, do you get an updated license for 2 months - not being facetious

Yes.

As above, you didn’t renew it you just changed the address

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 16/02/2024 20:06

@Tiredallthetimeneedsleep I would just apply for a renewed licence, include the new photo and pay the fee. New address is free, renewal costs (£21.50 I think).

Thanks all
