Can anyone make any recommendations... family of four, 2 boys 11 & 13, 2 adults, all like hiking, kayaking, cycling, mountains, love outdoors, scenery, nature, love historic artefacts (caves, ruins, etc), also like to be quite quiet (cities not our thing!), but kids also really want a site with a pool. So we're after a campsite in france, where we can hire a lodge for last week or August. We live near channel tunnel, so will drive down. Any recommendations welcome!!

Annecy.

That's what I was going to suggest.

We loved Annecy and the Alps. And we have done it in 1 day from Calais. Just don't mention the autoroute cost!

Loads of campsites around the lake

We have taken our touring caravan to this site a few times but it also has lodges to rent.

Its right on Lake Annecy, no pool but does have direct access to the lake via a small inlet, we have swam in the inlet plus taken canoes and paddleboards onto lake.

There is a cycle path almost from the door, which takes you all around the lake (although I don’t think it is all off road).

It is a short walk into St Jorioz which has a supermarket, bakery and restaurants, 10mins off road walking to a larger Carrefour and Lidl plus not too far to drive into Annecy itself.

We have done days out from there to Geneva and Chamonix, and trips up into the hills on opposite side of the lake.

I haven't been there but I looked at Lac d'Aiguebelette which has a Huttopia site. I found lots of accommodation was already booked at Annecy for places with pools.
