The "Ramona" stories by Beverly Cleary
The "Sophie" stories by Dick King-Smith

Both have protagonists early primary school age (both grow up through the series).

We go through a lot of fact books at our house and abridged classics.

Bel Mooney's 'kitty' series 'I don't want to' 'but you promised' etc - can't recommend these highly enough!!
