Next door neighbour has a cockerel IN the house

I can hear it crowing constantly the other side of my wall. It is waking my DD up.

So as not to drip feed but without writing an essay, NDN is mentally ill. Keeps some kind of half way house and has different tenant coming and going all the time. She has many animals; cats, dogs, chickens, horses. She also has a young daughter. Suspect that at least 2 of her male tenants are drug dealers. Local police are aware of her.

Anyway back to the cockerel. She has had for a few years in the garden and it usually crows in the morning. For the past week it is definitely in the house and is crowing ALL DAY. Is it likely to be okay or should I contact the RSPCA?

Forgot to say I’ve knocked at the door and messaged her and no answer.

I’d report to SS for the child.

I’ve just read that cockerels live 5-8 years so yes, I’d do something about the noise as well.

I'd phone your local safeguarding team about the daughter. Are any of the animals being let out into the garden?

It might be ill and she is keeping it separate from her other chickens.

There have been many anonymous reports to SS from different sources over the years. As I say she and her daughter are on multiple authorities radar. I have recently spoken to the police as I was concerned she was a victim of cuckooing but as far as I am aware no action has been taken.

You can only report where you can report - animals to RSPCA, you can try environmental health for noise, you can try SS for the child, and the police for cuckooing/drug dealing.

Sounds very difficult.

Cockerels can be vicious - I'd be worried about the safety of the child with it in the house. Maybe that's a good enough reason for SS to call on them?

Janelle7 · 16/02/2024 14:00

Definitely report to social services for the childs sake.

Mistlebough · 16/02/2024 14:03

Council (noise nuisance and might need permission depending on situation), rspcafor animals and safe guarding team.

Council animal welfare officer.
SS.
RSPCA.

Boy that cockerel will shit a lot! Anywhere and everywhere. I doubt your neighbour is keeping on top of cleaning it all up. The hygiene would be my first concern closely followed by potential injury from beak or claws. Maybe report to environmental health?
