Very frightening - and very sad 😢

This has really shaken me up. It's not surprising but it is incredibly sad and such a terrible waste 😩

Elleherd · 16/02/2024 12:42

It was always a mater of time either through direct intervention or allowing the conditions to do the job for him. Navalny was a brave man and aware of what he was doing and the costs.
RIP, and deepest sympathies to his wife and children.

Keep Vladimir Kara-Murza (and his family) in your thoughts too, poisoned twice, now serving 25 years. Another brave man paying the price for conscience.

BibbleandSqwauk · 16/02/2024 12:47

where is the reporting of this? I watched the BBC documentary on Navalny and have been trying to keep tabs but its not been easy.

Papyrophile · 16/02/2024 12:50

Predictable, but very sad nonetheless. Putin will not tolerate dissent.

CreateHope · 16/02/2024 12:51

Incredibly brave man - I have so much respect for people who express this level of dissent when the risks are so huge 😢

Navalny was very brave going back to Russia, i guess he took the view that Putin would kill him wherever he was.

We need to ensure that his murder wasn't in vain and that we defeat Russia in Ukraine.
We in Europe need to pull our fingers out of our ears and start re-arming, we cannot rely on the USA anymore, they wont even support the Ukrainians now.

They wont come to Latvia or Poland's aid if Putin wins in Ukraine.

ParanoidGynodroid · 16/02/2024 12:58

Putin is a blatant, open and unashamed murderer. Human life and human rights mean nothing to him.

It is utterly terrifying.

CreateHope · 16/02/2024 13:01

Agreed @jasflowers - it’s very frightening. When will he stop?

OP posts:
chuffnstuffs · 16/02/2024 13:02

Oh no! He had sacrificed so much already. Awful but predictable news.

MrsKwazi · 16/02/2024 13:04

The word is murdered

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 16/02/2024 13:07

Very sad news, but sadly not surprising. I really admire the courage of those who stand up to regimes like Putin's, in full knowledge of the risks to which they're exposing themselves. He has paid the ultimate price.

My thoughts are with his family and friends. It must be incredibly difficult to deal with such a loss in such difficult circumstances.

Agreed @jasflowers - it’s very frightening. When will he stop?

Realistically, not until we stop him.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/02/2024 13:13

Devastating but sadly not surprising. He was so, so brave.

Talkinpeace · 16/02/2024 13:16

Trumps loons have allowed Putin to think he can act with Impunity.

Elleherd · 16/02/2024 13:20

Sorry repeat post, wrong thread.

itsmyp4rty · 16/02/2024 13:40

Incredibly brave man. Why is it always the scum that win?

Ducksinthebath · 16/02/2024 13:59

"Dispatched" isn't a good way to put it at all, quite flippant.

SurvivingNotThriving · 16/02/2024 14:09

I was going to say 'Surprised it took Putin that long' but honestly I think Putin enjoyed toying with him, like a cat with a mouse.

CreateHope · 16/02/2024 14:24

@SurvivingNotThriving agreed - he’s a cruel man 🤬

OP posts:
CreateHope · 16/02/2024 14:25

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves but how do we do that without starting WW3? 😩

Agreed @jasflowers - it’s very frightening. When will he stop?

He won't, Russia, Putin and Ukraine are the biggest issues facing the West, inc the UK.
Yet your thread will be lucky to make 2 pages, the Govt isn't interested as as Ukraine runs out of munitions, the Govt talks of tax cuts.

We really are sleep walking toward a new Soviet style Russia NATO unable to stop him either in Ukraine or beyond

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 16/02/2024 14:35

CreateHope · 16/02/2024 14:24

@SurvivingNotThriving agreed - he’s a cruel man 🤬

Of course, I agree. I'm not really saying that we should necessarily stop him, as the risks of even trying are terrifying to contemplate. But I don't think he will stop otherwise.

Unless someone from within Russia manages to topple him? Not sure how that's ever going to happen though, given that he just seems to murder anyone who dares to raise their head above the parapet. There would need to be some sort of secret resistance who didn't make their existence known until they were ready to launch a coup. I guess we'll see what happens.

Perhaps the best that we can hope for is that Putin will get sick and die, but I would still be fearful of what he might do if he was terminally ill and had absolutely nothing left to lose. And then, of course, there is also the question of who we would end up with instead...it could be someone even worse!

Newchapterbeckons · 16/02/2024 16:26

So sad

ParanoidGynodroid · 16/02/2024 16:37

Ducksinthebath · 16/02/2024 13:59

I disagree. I think dispatched is exactly the right word. Murder implies passion, something human... dispatched is just an emotionless sorting of a problem, as is always the way with this monster and his band of simpering, spineless goons.

Navalny had more bravery and humanity in his little finger than the whole lot of them put together.
