I slammed my finger in the car door today

Big SUV. The door slammed completely shut with my finger in it, hitting just beyond the first joint. I had to use my other hand to open the door using the handle. I was sure it must be crushed and anticipated an evening in minor injuries getting X rays.

Weirdly, it seems almost completely fine. Small blood spots, mild swelling, some stiffness. Doesn't even hurt any more

Anyone else had a remarkable escape from what seemed very likely to be quite a significant injury?

Ouch!

I slammed my sons finger in the car door. Considering it's a few mm gap he was OK to but he was in agony. I hope you feel OK

Allmarbleslost · 15/02/2024 22:58

ouch! I did the same a few years ago and my nail went black and fell off

XenoBitch · 15/02/2024 22:59

I did similar years ago. Shut my thumb in a taxi door... the door shut too. Hurt like a bitch.. was the worst pain I had felt (and I have had a tooth abscess). I nearly fainted several times. I was due to meet friends in a pub and I was so delirious with pain, I was refused entry as the bouncers thought I was drunk.

2 hours later... it was fine. My nail did turn black and drop off though, which was grim. There was a nice phase where I could lift it up and show people my blackened nail bed.

Just yesterday, I got a very corrosive bathroom cleaner in my eye. Bottle said to rinse and go to hospital. I rinsed with water (and milk), panicked lots at the 111 staff, told them numerous useless facts about the particular acid the cleaner was made from... and was fine an hour later.
Dear reader, today I still have my eyeball and sight. It feels a bit irritated but the Flash bathroom cleaner failed to sizzle its way through my eye, socket, skull, hair, pillow, next door etc.

Glad you didn't wake up with a melted eye @XenoBitch .

I don't think I will lose the nail, it slammed lower than that just below my first joint (where the bloodspot is)

Not that I wanted a broken finger but impressive bruising might have been nice, DH is very underwhelmed and ...my finger was flattened in the SUV door! Show some sympathy!

I do have a kind of line across the finger inside to show where the door closed. Perhaps it will be a bruise in the morning and my kids will rally round, lol

Fingers seem really resilient to being shut in car doors etc. Maybe they are a bit more flexible than other bones.. I don't know.

OP - let the kids rally round. Milk it for all its worth.

I slammed my DF hand in the door, all four fingers. I felt AWFUL. For some bizarre reason he had just the front door to get himself out of the back seat. I was sure I broke his fingers but he was absolutely fine ! Makes me cold thinking about it.

Princesspollyyy · 15/02/2024 23:13

My mum shut her fingers is the car door before and she was in so much pain she fainted.

Sunnysidegold · 16/02/2024 01:33

I shut my fingers in the car door once and tossed and turned all night because of the pain. In the morning I was sure my thumb was broken and trotted off to a&e one! O find out it was not broken and the pain was coming from trapped.blood under the nail. A quick poke with a heated pin and the pain went away!
I did lose the nail which made me feel so queasy.

thaegumathteth · 16/02/2024 03:13

My toddler did this in our patio doors. I genuinely expected her finger to fall for when I opened them. It was totally fine.

NewbieSM · 16/02/2024 06:11

Ouch I feel your pain. I slammed a safe door on my thumb last year, holy shit I've never felt pain like it. Ripped my nail up from the cuticle end, blood everywhere. I felt very stupid and went to work for another week before my boss forced me to go to the GP. Turns out I had broken the tip of my thumb bone off completely. I had to have surgery that day to put pins in and sew my nail bed back together. I couldn't use my hand for nearly 2 months. Please get an X-ray to be sure, you easily could have a broken finger.

Ouch that looks sore OP! My brother slammed my finger in his bedroom door about 15 years ago and I still remember that initial shock when it first happens - must’ve been agony on a heavy car door!

When I was about 11 I got out of the front passenger seat, and turned back across the car to let my younger brother out who was sitting behind me. I had rested my left hand on the car, opening the back door with my right, and my fingers were in the gap of the hinge of the still-open front passenger door.

I haven't had much coffee yet so hopefully that makes sense!

My sister had got out the other back seat, walked round the car and 'helpfully' shut the front door, and the hinges slammed on my fingers.

I screamed and was convinced all my fingers were broken. I'm left-handed too so panicked a bit about being able to write and stuff at school. I was absolutely fine. Not even swelling!

Sometimes the big, dramatic injuries turn out to not be as big as we think, it's the innocuous knocks you have to watch that can turn into dramatic injuries!

My dad did this to a family member but with a sliding car door. We were in Tenerife and it was roasting hot so when he started shrieking my dad thought he was just making a big deal of sitting on the hot leather seat and got ready to drive off.

2 people on the street ran to the car to help. As soon as the door opened he was fine and never even mentioned it for the rest of the holiday 😄.

It was all 4 fingers and we couldn't understand how the door closed so easily on them.
