UK officially in recession...

Startingagainandagain · 15/02/2024 09:31

Latest stats released show the UK is now officially in recession (Office for national statistic data).

Gaslighting has started in the media by ministers to try to minimise that fact.

Isn't it time to face the facts instead and call a general election?

I know the picture is bleak and any new party in power will need years to try to sort out this mess but something needs to be done...

The UK's decline in the past few decade or so has really been dramatic.

Western Europe is grappling with a complex set of circumstances, and it would be too reductive to blame Brexit entirely for the situation.

@SunshineArmy

''Western Europe is grappling with a complex set of circumstances, and it would be too reductive to blame Brexit entirely for the situation.''

It would be fair to also blame incompetent and corrupt Tory politicians who spent the past few years making themselves and their mates richer while everyone else struggled.

There are serious issues that are more acute in the UK, on top of the obvious Brexit one.

Widespread profiteering is one of them.

Other countries have managed to curb energy bills for example while the UK government did nothing to stop energy companies from raking in huge profits. Same with transport and so on.

Privatising everything has led to massive profits for companies on the back of consumers' misery.

It has been announced this week that British Gas profits jumped to £751m in 2023, up from £72m a year earlier...while people can't afford to heat their homes.

There is something very, very wrong in this country right now.

Rivers and sea polluted by raw sewage, working people struggling to make ends meet, a government that has been flirting with Fascism.

it really does puzzle me I must say some people are still in denial and somehow believe the propaganda that this is all Ukraine/Covid and the usual scapegoating of immigrants...

I don't even think it is a right versus left debate anymore at this point.

The apathy and willingness to just swallow all this gaslighting because they come from a few privileged people who went to public school has to end.

op what are you expecting?

Say Labour got in as you wish. They’re dropping policies already, which policies are you looking to?

I can understand how some selfish people are not concerned about schools, health etc if using private services but surely every single person must realize that there is no private A&E/ambulances for even the majority of the wealthy.

Hence we all have a much higher risk of not surviving should we need A&E or an ambulance at the moment. Any of us could need A&E and very likely our elderly relatives will but it could be us or our kids too. Having witnessed the life changing consequences of no ambulances first hand I cant see why it is not a deal breaker for every single voter.

Surely your life and that of your closest is the most important thing even to the selfish.

Labour's missions are here, if anyone is interested. They haven't dropped any of them, have they? If so which ones?

I haven't seen any indication of this where I am. People still seem to have money to spend. Local cafes and eateries full. Out with my husband this week and looking for somewhere to have lunch. Costa full, M & S full, went to Frankie and Benny's and I was surprised how busy that was.

allii03 · 15/02/2024 14:25

Self-employed. My industry is a good bellwether for this. Work has dropped off a cliff. People have been talking about a 'silent recession' for the last few months.

Some areas and demographics will be feeling less of an impact, that is always the way.

IClaudine - Only read the summaries of those 5 missions. Have Labour said how they are going to pay for it all.

Alii03 - What industry are you in?

scalt · 15/02/2024 14:31

Lockdowns (not covid, but LOCKDOWNS dragged out for months on end) which forced millions of healthy people not to work was never going to end well economically. It was at the government's peril that they dragged out lockdowns and destroyed businesses for month after month after month.

'We have to raise your mortgage interest to bring down inflation rate'

All I hear is: We have to raise the elephant rates to bring down the giraffe rate.

Everything is just made up

Yes. Also, at the last general election Labour had the most comprehensive costing plans of any party.

In the last four years the Tories have wasted £100 billion of taxpayers money.

THE Tories have “wasted” nearly £100 billion in the last four years, according to a new report.

Does it say in the more detailed PDF? If not, hopefully the manifesto will make it clear.

Yep people were deaf to it at the time even though it was obvious

The Govt don’t control interest rates. Interest rate changes aren’t intended to make instant impact. The impact of them on the economy comes 18 months later. BOE are focussed on the medium term, not today.

2dogsandabudgie · 15/02/2024 14:49

IClaudine - How much is the setting up of The New Office for Value For Money going to cost?

Why are they going to waste money appointing a COVID Corruption Commissioner. I think we all know that it will take years and cost millions to take people to court to try and get any money back and even then they might not even be successful.

Taking back control of our borders? It was Labour who introduced the 'open door' policy in the first place. We need to have the support of France which is never going to happen. The majority of immigrants don't have any papers so trying to send them back to a safe country is nigh on impossible, and that's without the Human Rights Lawyers to contend with.

Dapbag · 15/02/2024 14:59

How much is not having one costing us at the moment?

Taking back control of our borders? It was Labour who introduced the 'open door' policy in the first place.

The Tories have had 14 years to control immigration.

Janelle7 · 15/02/2024 14:59

We need to stop wasting millions daily on asylum seekers imo

Well that's really persuaded me to vote Labour🙄

Tinkerbyebye · 15/02/2024 15:02

So are other countries. It’s world wide

ant calling an election now won’t help all parties are crap but sometimes it’s better the crap you know. Look what Labour did last time they were in. Libdems, Greens etc have no experience. We are buggered whatever happens

2dogsandabudgie · 15/02/2024 15:03

Labour introducing Respect Orders? They sound like the old ASBOs. They didn't work either!

shielder · 15/02/2024 15:03

Well I'm not shocked!

IClaudine · 15/02/2024 15:04

2dogsandabudgie

This is a thread about the recession we are in, not the funding of Labour's plans.

As I said, the manifesto should spell it all out so we can all make our voting decisions.

Or, maybe start a thread on the issue, rather than derail this one? Perhaps some wiser heads than me will know more detail.

Dapbag · 15/02/2024 15:04

@2dogsandabudgie It's not my intention to persuade you to vote for anyone.
