Anyone offer a guess at how much these MOT advisories would be

Obviously won't be an exact figure but I know nothing about cars and am getting my first one in years. It's passed mot but has these advisories. Just don't want to get it if I'll be shelling out a small fortune in the not so distant future

Pic would help!

It depends on the car, indie garage or main dealer. What is their hourly fitting rate ?

BlueAndPinkHairDontCare · 14/02/2024 16:27

Also it's 2005 so I expect things needing doing, but it's only 84000 miles and got full service history so am happy with it otherwise for its age

I'm not sure, we have independent garages round here I think. I'm in Lancashire

It's a Nissan almera

This.

So best bet would be to ring a few and ask them? Would they need to look at the car first or will they just give me an idea

I would not buy a 19 year old motor with advisories on its MOT. There will be planets out there which don't need money spending immediately.

Frogger17 · 14/02/2024 16:29

A Nissan will be cheap as chips, probably £300??? Not sure I own a Land Rover rarely gives change from a grand 🤣

Unfortunately I'm very limited in what I can get, have very very low budget

Thanks, I'm happy to spend a couple of hundred or so if needed but just don't want to end up paying the price of the car

Older cars tend to have cheaper disc. I have a 2008 and new pads and discs cost me £100 but partner fitted them. In a garage maybe around £200/£250? If the discs are ruined you’ll likely need pads too. The steering track being damp is something I’d be very very cautious about and is likely why they’re selling tbh. Could be a simple seal that needs fixing or a steering rack rebuilt. I’d leave well alone, it’s showing signs of its age

SecondUsername4me · 14/02/2024 16:33

How much is the car listed for?

Just under 1k

Right, but what I mean is you can do better with the money. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a 19 year old car but that you can get more for your budget than a car plus immediate repairs.

SecondUsername4me · 14/02/2024 16:35

What's the mileage on it?

amiold · 14/02/2024 16:35

Discs and pads won't be much but if the steering rack is starting to corrode etc it wouldn't be worth fixing at that age

SecondUsername4me · 14/02/2024 16:36

Sorry just seen you already said the mileage upthread.

Tbh I'd be more concerned the timing belt going at those miles/age. You don't get any warning that's going to go.

When was the MOT done?

The steering rack is a worry, it won't be cheap if that goes. Pads/discs less than £300 I expect. But steering rack could be really pricey, the part's not too horrific 2-300 but labour could mount up.

SecondUsername4me · 14/02/2024 16:41

Ok, so at best you have a year of the car.

Take the cost of the car, the insurance and tax costs, estimate a years worth of fuel, and divide it all by 12.

Is the amount it splits into per month lower than your typical monthly travel costs without a car?

Why only a year at best?

Agree with pp - has it had the timing belt replaced? You need to factor that in if it hasn't.

Have a look for an alternative car on autotrader.co.uk.
I found 186 cars under £1000 within 40 miles of Wigan. Not sure where you are in Lancashire.
You must be able to find something better.
There's 41 with mileage less than 90000.
You could look at cat N write offs that only had cosmetic damage and are fully repaired. When I was selling my cat N Fiesta which I'd had repaired it had only 30k miles on the clock and was 9 years old and I was only offered £1700 for it by a dealer. Don't buy a car S (structural damage).
