Most deranged thing you’ve done in a driving lesson/test?

My test is coming up soon. Been doing really well but I made the stupidest mistake today and I’m too embarrassed to tell anyone I know in real life. But I need to tell someone before I spend the whole week thinking about this before I fall asleep.

I was following a route I’ve done before but never with the satnav. Approached a mini roundabout before dual carriageway slip road and was going straight over/2nd exit. I must’ve heard ‘turn right…’ or something and been daydreaming, because I went the wrong way around the roundabout 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️😩. It’s such a stupid mistake that I’m half convinced the satnav showed an anti-clockwise diagram that I followed blindly. So dangerous of me and ridiculous because I live on a road with three mini roundabouts! Argh!!!

My teacher says the rest of my driving is great and doesn’t want to move the test but it really shook me (and him I think!!) obviously I’ve never done it before.

Please tell me your stupid and deranged mistakes/decisions as a learner to make me feel better and push this out of my mind!

I was turning left, in the left lane, left indicator on...then turned right. Luckily I was the only person at the junction otherwise I would probably have caused a major accident.

My driving instructor just said "what the heck woman" and I suddenly realised, took us 5 miles out of the route before I could turn around.

Meceme · 13/02/2024 20:00

Ran over a dog that ran out between two parked cars. Emergency stop but glancing hit, it ran off, I failed test then had to report at police station.

shellyleppard · 13/02/2024 20:00

On my first driving test the examiner asked me for the hand signal for turning left when your indicator wasn't working. I promptly slapped him in the face!!!! 😂😂😂😂 I put my left arm straight out!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 The best bit I had the same examiner on my second test....and passed 😂😂

In my 2nd test I pulled too far across the give way line at a roundabout. I realised I was in the way of the cars coming round from the right so I helpfully threw the car into reverse and moved backwards out of the way. Only I hadn’t checked my mirrors and I reversed into the bumper (no damage) of the car I was surprised to find behind me!

I never ever reverse without thinking of this with shame- which means that I never ever reverse without looking. So it was a huge lesson and I take the positive from it ☺️

I just decided to stop the test and pulled over . It got too much and I thought the examiner would drive us back.
Anyway turns out he wasn't allowed to drive the car or leave me there with the keys.
We had to walk back for over a mile, in the rain.
I made everyone after me late for their test.
And then 6 weeks later I had the same examiner for my next text.

piechipsgravy · 13/02/2024 20:11

I stopped at a traffic lights (at a green light) to cheerfully wave the pedestrians waiting across the road (despite the fact that there was, obviously, still oncoming traffic in the other direction.

Out of curiosity, what did the police say?

Shnowdrops · 13/02/2024 20:20

Oh ffs I did two really mental things. One in a lesson, instructor said "when you get through the tunnel keep left". Me having no idea wtf that meant went to hard steer to the left into a bloody wall. Instructor was very quick and stopped me saying "what the hell are you doing." Very embarrassing.

Second in a test I managed to bump up on the roundabout island. Sigh.

My mum used to just nod and smile when the instructor would say "now check the map" (meaning the big fuck off map on the big fuck off road sign at a roundabout telling you which lane you need to be in). She nodded and smiled every time thinking "what map?!"

I think some people are just really fucking thick about driving and then it all clicks and you're fine. I'm a fantastic driver now but it was so alien to me when I was learning.

Omg why couldn't he drive back? What if someone has a panic attack or is sick? I think it was sensible of you to stop if you didn't feel ready.

Surroundedbyfools · 13/02/2024 20:27

My husband is a driving instructor n he’s literally seen endless mental things. The worst has to be a pupil who manage to suddenly swerve the car into a high kerb absolutely buckling the entire wheel and making the car undrivable. He had to phone her a taxi to get home and while he waited on a recovery truck she actually text and asked if she can get a lesson the next day. …..fuck sake. He lost 4 days wages trying to get that sorted

Gemsty · 13/02/2024 20:28

Hey, Coming from me....as a driving examiner (lol) we aren't insured to drive the car back so have to walk

FinallyHere · 13/02/2024 20:28

Straight out of the driving test centre, I led the way to what I thought was my driving instructors car which I was due to use for my test. I thought the reason I couldn't get the door unlocked with my key was because I was nervous.

Tester looked very relived when I finally noticed it was the right model, but the wrong car: he only said he had been concerned that I appeared to be intending to use a car which did not have L-plates.

When we finally got going, I stalked the engine five times in the first few minutes. Convinced that I had definitely failed, I relaxed and enjoyed what I thought would just be driving practice. Couldn't believe my ears when he said I had passed and had to ask him to repeat himself.

Shnowdrops · 13/02/2024 20:30

@Shania7788

Best of luck by the way OP. It's one of the best feelings in the world when you pass 🤗

Wanttobehealthy · 13/02/2024 20:12

Out of curiosity, what did the police say?

They were very kind. Just took a statement and thanked me for reporting it. It is a legal requirement to report apparently. It was many decades ago but I still haven't lived it down.
When my DD failed her first test my DH said 'At least you didn't hit a dog' She passed the second time though.

NotMyDayJob · 13/02/2024 20:31

Tried to over take a bus that was pulling out, all I needed to do was give way and I'd have probably passed

PuttingDownRoots · 13/02/2024 20:35

I got a minor for speeding.
DH still finds this hilarious, since apparently after 12 years I still drive "too slow". (I.e exactly the speed limit.)

bruffin · 13/02/2024 20:35

Broke a parked car light! Narrow main road , big red bus coming towards me and instead of stopping i sneaked forward and hit a parked car. I obviuosly failed my driving test.

The man who owned the car ended up going to my driving school and told them it was unfair driving test and we should complain because the examiner was horrible to me!

EveryKneeShallBow · 13/02/2024 20:36

My examiner asked me to take the next right, but I went left on to a road that had no turnings for miles, we just had to drive and drive until we could make a turn and go in a massive circle back to the intended route. I passed, though! Good luck op.

ollypollymolly · 13/02/2024 20:36

Manual car. Stalled about 5 times. Then nearly went through a red light. Examiner had to use the emergency brakes. Hmmmm I didn’t pass

many years later I took an automatic test and passed. That was probably attempt 5

dollymixedup · 13/02/2024 20:37

I was driving back to the test centre having done all the hard bits when I stalled at traffic lights and panicked. Stalled again and then again as I was shaking so much, started to cry and then threw up.

The examiner stopped the test 'in the interest of public safety' and we had to walk back to the centre.

Thirty years ago and I've never driven since.😭🤮🤣

spanieleyes · 13/02/2024 20:39

Was overtaken on a main road by an elderly woman on a bicycle as I was driving rather slowly!

Xmasbaby11 · 13/02/2024 20:40

not on a test but I’d certainly had at least 30 lessons by this point - slow learner - and probably on instructor no 3.

I was doing a three point turn, which was more like an 8 point turn, but didn’t notice I ended up facing the same way I started. The instructor was fuming!

Garman · 13/02/2024 20:41

Not me but the other person starting their test beside me at the same time as me crashed into the car parked beside them as they went to pull out of the space 🙈😂 The examiner was stuck in the car because it was his side that got hit and wedged onto the other car. Didn’t see what happened next because I had to go do my test! They failed though 😂
