Out of date chicken would you use?

Found two packs of chicken breast in the back of the fridge… one dated 9 feb one dated 11 feb. Neither smells at all, would you still use it?

Jessforless · 13/02/2024 16:22

No. Never with chicken especially.

watermelon89 · 13/02/2024 16:23

Maybe. Is it slimy and watery at all?

YoBeaches · 13/02/2024 16:23

The 11th yes, prob not the 9th to be safe. I'd kick myself if we were sick!

god no - food poisoning from chicken is absolutely awful

CharliesAngles · 13/02/2024 16:25

Chicken, seafood, fish and pork - no, wouldn’t take the chance.

Beef or lamb - depends on how it looks and smells.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 13/02/2024 16:25

11th probs fine, smell it but 9th, Nope. Ditch it.

MrsKwazi · 13/02/2024 16:26

No it seems totally fine! I can kick myself. Prob best to bin but I HATE x 1000 food waste. Just batch cooked a massive pot of korma sauce too.

might cook it for the local fox or someting.

OP posts:
Fennelseeds · 13/02/2024 16:27

Nope, and I hate wasting food but I wouldn't even want to risk it.

HaitchOar · 13/02/2024 16:29

Other meats? Yeah. Chicken? Absolutely not.

I’ve had food poisoning from chicken twice in my life (other peoples’ fault) and both times I swear I wanted to die. Don’t take the risk! It’s never worth it with chicken.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 13/02/2024 16:31

I'd bin it too. The 11th one is probably fine if it doesn't smell but you won't enjoy it now you know it's past it's use by date. I do feel terribly guilty binning meat especially but not worth the risk.

BCBird · 13/02/2024 16:32

Not a chance would I use it.

SquirrelsAssemble · 13/02/2024 16:36

Assuming it's from a supermarket & your fridge is at 5 or below, I'd use it. If not the 9th dated, definitely the 11th.

It's been refrigerated, it's unopened and you're going to cook it thoroughly which will destroy bacteria.

SirChenjins · 13/02/2024 16:37

Nope, not a chance - having had food poisoning from chicken once I never risk it.

Mairzydotes · 13/02/2024 16:40

No .

My husband would offer some to the cat to see if they ate it cos they don't eat off meat .

CalamityA · 13/02/2024 16:41

I'd use either of them providing I was able to apply common sense.

People are obsessed with arbitrary use by dates. How did the world survive without them?

By using eyes and nose, that's how.

MrsKwazi · 13/02/2024 16:42

Thanks all. Have binned. I feel so so guilty!

Chicken can still smell and look ok after its use by date but induce the most horrific 🤮 and 💩<bitter experience > - not worth taking the chance imo.

Sparklfairy · 13/02/2024 17:04

Many MNers would be horrified to see how lax I am about use by dates (like you OP, I can't stand food waste and will eat most things even if they're past their best)...

But I do. not. fuck. with. chicken.

This. I'd not risk it.

Redballgreenball · 13/02/2024 18:07

Absolutely no chance!

Perfect28 · 13/02/2024 18:16

You definitely can't always smell if food is unsafe. Don't risk it with chicken! I can't believe you even considered it tbh

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 13/02/2024 20:46

How big is your fridge that you missed not one but two packets of chicken Grin

Agree with above. Do not tempt the Chicken Food Poisoning Spirits - they are truly terrible in their revenge.

ApocalypseNowt · 13/02/2024 21:25

Good call OP. I'm a grotbag but I don't mess with chicken!

Yozzer87 · 13/02/2024 21:41

No. I am laid back in general with use by dates but not meat and especially not chicken.
