If you have a cat, how much time do they spend sleeping/relaxing?

How much time throughout the day do your cats spend sleeping or chilling out, as opposed to playing or going outside? And how old are they?

Two seven year old cats.

They are asleep overnight, wake up for breakfast, then back to sleep.

Do a bit of exercise in the afternoon, hang around DH in the office.

Dinner then cuddles, bit of exercise and all asleep by about 8.

Seriously it is a lot of sleep.

nightnightcircus · 13/02/2024 08:08

Our cat is 12 and has arthritis in his leg. He spends most of his time chilling or sleeping but goes outside in short bursts. Usually including a trip outside around 5.30am.

He does still occasionally get the zoomies - we played laser pointer in the garden yesterday eve!

Are you concerned about your cat OP?

Caspianberg · 13/02/2024 08:08

Loads. He’s 6.
In summer he’s outside almost constantly but he’s asleep outside large majority, not exercising.
In winter he’s in and out, but inside snoozing or if outside snoozing in sun
He does come for a walk most days with me and Ds in local woods which is about a 30 min walk.

Even when one was an outdoor cat we had a tracker on him so we know he used to spend hours asleep in a neighbour's garage.

Are we talking a walk on a lead, or does he just follow you?!

My 5 year old cat goes out for five minutes first thing, presumably to check the outside world is still there, and again later on at some point, before his main prowl between 6/7 and 8/9/10. Otherwise he’s sleeping, grooming, eating.

CMOTDibbler · 13/02/2024 08:11

Although I don't entirely know what they do at night - and in the winter I think they are in a lot more than in the summer when the evidence is that they do a lot of hunting at night - I'd say that between 7am and 10pm they are only awake for a couple of hours normally.
OTOH, my dogs are lurchers, and unless we are doing something like going out, they will be asleep too, so I think on average the cats are more awake

I’m not concerned no, I just have a young cat, she turned a year old. And as expected she is very energetic and playful and I feel very guilty when I go to work. I only work from the office two days a week and the rest of the time I’m home with her. But I’m just trying to make myself feel better by thinking she will be fine and probably just sleep. I’m hoping that as she gets older she will get more relaxed so that I don’t have to feel guilty for leaving her to go to work. Never had cats before, grew up with a dog. So I am wondering if most cats get lazier with age and at what age I might be able to expect it.

im not wishing her life away or anything, just curious really as I hate thinking she is bored at home even though she has lots of toys

Aw, she will be fine honestly.

Caspianberg · 13/02/2024 08:16

@nightnightcircus - no he just follows us. Always has done. Comes around the block with Ds on his running bike, used to accompany me on daily pram walk for Ds nap when he was smaller. Walks with us to neighbours or up through the woods.
It’s lovely, but also a bit of a pain when he try’s to follow us further so have to sneak out. He’s ended up with us 1.5km away at local supermarket before.

AnnaMagnani · 13/02/2024 08:16

She is probably:
Asleep
Monitoring the situation outside the window
Playing with toys

The most popular toy by far in our house is an enormous cat tunnel. Burns off a lot of energy and doesn't need human interaction.

Nolarbear · 13/02/2024 08:17

@nightnightcircus i also just love hearing about other peoples cats and what they get up to 😆

Nearly 3. Justices had some zoomies but have been sleeping pretty much all night (in summer girl cat goes hunting at night). Will pop out a bit during the day but the majority of time is definitely devoted to beauty sleep.

Igmum · 13/02/2024 08:17

Justices? just

Mistymist · 13/02/2024 08:17

I have 2 indoor cats aged 5 and 6. They sleep a lot! They are awake an alert at 5.30, then again around 9.30 until 11 or so. They spend the whole noon and afternoon sleeping untill let's say around 18. Then they are more active in the evening/night then around midnight go back to sleep till 5.
There is no need to worry. She is probably snoozing and doing her own things while you are away.

ChatterMonkey · 13/02/2024 08:23

We have 2 two year old cats, and they pretty much constantly sleep... they go to bed with us at night until around 3am where i think they go out for a wander, but back by 6am to annoy us for breakfast.

Then after breakfast they both go back upstairs to bed where they sleep all day until dinner time 😂

Dizzy82 · 13/02/2024 08:23

We have 4 cats, 7 years old, 3 of them sleep a lot during the day and seem to get crazy just as we want to go to sleep.

1 of our cats goes out and stays out weeks before coming back, she always smells of farms (we live in countryside). We've joked about tagging her to see where she goes, this week we got a call from local cats protection asking if we had a missing cat. Turns out she keeps going to a local holiday park and spending time with two ladies on reception 🤣🤣

soupfiend · 13/02/2024 08:27

We think ours might be about 11

Her daily schedule is mostly sleep, sicking up on the carpet, dragging her food out onto the carpet (never the easy clean laminate floor), messing up all the rugs, clawing the furniture, attacking cats through the living room windows and messing up my blinds and ornaments in the process, finding fresh clean washing to lie on.

Bonus points if she manages to sick up on the washing too.

WASZPy · 13/02/2024 08:32

I have a 4yo female Burmese. She's allowed out but has elected to be a house cat. She hangs around with us in the mornings while we get dressed and in the evenings while we sort the house out and get ready for bed, but other than that she sleeps- on us if she can, otherwise in her cat tower. We bought a heated mat for her tower and that sealed the deal, she hardly ever leaves it.

SkankingWombat · 13/02/2024 08:32

13yo DCat1:
In winter she might pop outside for a short wander after breakfast or just before dinner if it's sunny and dry. Otherwise she only goes out to go to the toilet. She then spends 1-3hrs/day watching out of the window (more likely if it's sunny). She will happily play for short bursts if you drag a string around for her, but she definitely gets tired more quickly these days. The rest of her time is spent sleeping, dozing, cleaning, and pretending to be starving.
Summer is very similar in terms of activity levels, but she will do all of her daytime snoozing in her favourite sunny spots in the garden and night sleeping in the house. She is something of a sun worshipper.

10mo DCat2:
He's finally sleeping longer stretches in the day and mostly sleeps through the night, but could generally be likened to a very friendly and loving but incredibly antisocial teenager who has taken a large amount of speed. He spends some time each day shadowing me when I'm home, but spends many hours either haring back and forth through the house at top speed until he's loudly panting or using the garden as his personal parkour course, also at full steam. He's totally bonkers.

Eggandchipss · 13/02/2024 08:32

We have two cats who are 10 months old now, they sleep loads on and off during the day, they play more in the early evening and later at night. I often come home and they come running down the stairs with sleepy eyes as they’ve just got off the bed after a long nap. If you’re concerned she’s bored would you consider having another cat for her to play with 😺

There is a cat near us with his own Facebook page. He goes all over the place and has to be retrieved. He particularly likes popping to Costa and is often found on the seats outside. (I think he goes in but they kick him out)

InfiniteUsernames · 13/02/2024 08:40

Asleep for the majority of the day. One is currently sitting on the radiator, the other having second breakfast before going back to bed (my bed). Age 4.

However, you can guarantee that if I want to walk anywhere, they will be outside already and trying to follow me.

ssd · 13/02/2024 08:42

I love a cat thread. Im allergic to them and have never had or really wanted to have a cat. They are too bossy and independent for meGrin.

But i do love reading of others having them.

One complaint is though....where are the pictures to back up these stories?
I want to see some cute cats please Smile

Octavia64 · 13/02/2024 08:44

I have three 10 month old cats.

They wake me up about 4 am demanding to be fed then sleep until dawn when they go out and run around outside. They come back and then run around the house and garden chasing each other like mad things until about noon.

They sleep from about noon until about 6pm when they go outside to see what is happening there. They're usually back after an hour or so and watch tv with me in the evening.

Then I go to bed at about 10 and they sod off outside for a bit before coming in at some point and waking me at 4 again.
