If you have a cat, how much time do they spend sleeping/relaxing?

How much time throughout the day do your cats spend sleeping or chilling out, as opposed to playing or going outside? And how old are they?

I have a girl cat who is 12, she sleeps a lot and spends a lot of time shouting, this is not miaowing which she also does. In lockdown we were all WFH for a year and mainly upstairs. She always wants someone upstairs these days so stands at the top shouting for us to come upstairs.

She does still play sometimes but is much less active than when she was young. She still charges up stairs at lightening speed. DS is her favourite and she thinks he is her kitten, DH is some sort of complete slave and she manipulates him. Her and I have an understanding about sharing DH.

DH will lay on the top landing and stroke her every morning whilst everyone else is trying to get ready, she likes him to lay completely on the floor. He also chops her cat food and arranges it in a tiny pile as she apparently ‘prefers it that way’. She actually doesn’t give a shit she just likes the fuss. We buy cat food in bulk in pouches, he arranges them so she has a selection of flavours in a specific way, he also feeds her a couple of small pieces of meat off his plate every day.

4 year old girl sleeps about 16 hours a day. Can usually be found on my bed. DD often kisses her goodbye as she leaves for school and returns to find her in the exact same position. This all changes in summer as we hardly see her! Assume she’s sleeping under bushes. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Our 3 teenage cats sleep from after an outside post breakfast comfort break through to about 3.30pm. Then it's a spot of stretch cat yoga, fighting/wrestling, zoomies and supper (usually in that order). Then a quick territory check outside, evening snoozing on the sofa, then a small handful of biscuits before being locked in the utility room with the catflap overnight. I presume they're in and out most of the night as they certainly sleep most of the day. Or they're just 99% asleep!

My cat likes to let us know she is awake at 5ish, but is happy to wait until we get up for 'Breakfast'. She may go out or not depending on the weather. Going out is going out the front door and round to the back door. She then likes to sit on me for a short while before finding her spot for 'Big Sleep',For the rest of the day.

She is fairly awake in the evening and then goes to bed with us.
She may or may not do another lap.

Fairymother · 13/02/2024 10:24

Cat 1: is outside most of the day. She comes home for a 1-2h nap in the afternoon and again to eat in the evening. Shes outside st night as well. Goes absolutely crazy when locked in.

Cat 2: goes outside for short walks around the garden. Sleeps the rest of the day.

MissPeachyKeen · 13/02/2024 10:41

@Dizzy82 how do you tell them apart?!

DRS1970 · 13/02/2024 10:42

Out eldest is 16 years old. She will sleep 8pm until 6am in her room (the utility), then 8am until 4pm on our bed, then on our laps or sofa in the evenings. So is at 16hrs a day plus at present. Out other cat is a bit younger at 15 years, but probably sleeps half the day away. He is a quite active boy in patrolling his territory daily.

GalileoHumpkins · 13/02/2024 10:43

Mine is 30 months old (sorry!), his usual routine is sleeping on the bed with us for most of the night, either curled up around my head or on my husband's legs. He rises early for breakfast, followed by more napping or bird watching. Once we're up he's in full play mode, this lasts most of the morning, he loves chasing milk rings around, he'll run on his wheel or we play together with wand toys. Around 1 he starts his routine of washing, napping and lolling on the sofa/bed or in a box. He spends the evening playing or snuggling with one of us.
He has a good life!
Thanks to everyone who posted a picture, love them all 😍

Loving these 'relaxing' cats Smile

ifonly4 · 13/02/2024 11:15

We have two brothers.

One is very chilled, he's been awake for about 30 mins since I got up (7am). Expect him to sleep until later afternoon, he'll probably eat, go out, have a wash and go back to sleep until DD returns from work, wakes him up and he then has another snack. He'll probably sleep until 9pm when he wants his supper, then go out for 30-60 mins.

Other one probably had a sleep while I was out for an hour, but otherwise he's been in and out, eaten, pestered me - and I think he's just gone to bed. He'll wake up if I go in the room and will probably be up at lunchtime for food. Sure to be in kitchen at teatime - he likes to sit on bin and supervise proceedings. He'll go out around this time, come in looking to play. Another nap, and then he'll want his supper later.

Not sure how long they're awake in night, but my active cat is usually waiting for me outside our bedroom door from around 6am.

Fizbosshoes · 13/02/2024 11:22

Ours are 8, boy one is more lazy. His exhausting schedule is roughly as follows
7.30am pester all family members for food, eat 3 bites, go out for about 10 min. Repeat.
8am: go to sleep on mine/DH bed
4pm : move to sleep under radiator in our room
7pm : pester for food
7.30pm : sleep on dining chair
8.30pm : go out (especially if it's rainjng)
9pm : come in and go to sleep on DDs lap
10pm : go nuts and chase other cat round the house for 10 min or play with toys
11pm go to sleep on chair/sofa

(He might be terribly active between 11.30 and 7.am....but I doubt it! 🤣)

TheSnowyOwl · 13/02/2024 11:26

Three very senior cats. I think unless they are walking to their food bowl, eating, going to the loo, or walking to where they next plan to sleep, they are always sleeping.

I know they have various spots outside that they like sleeping in and despite the vast amount of wildlife around, there is no suggestion that they have hunted in years.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 13/02/2024 11:33

My boys are litter mates, but they are complete opposites. They are not allowed at night, so when it goes dark, they are indoors. They are five years old.

In the evening, they are awake. One still plays with toys and does so a little until my bedtime. The other will be sat with us for fuss and affection until bedtime.

At bedtime, they sleep all night until either I get up or dawn has broken. (this can be troublesome during BST).

They then go out for their morning toilet and attempt to hunt.

Around mid-morning, they come back for a snack/second breakfast. Food is permanently available to them. At this time, one of them stays in until about 2 pm sleeping. The other goes back out; this routine continues throughout the day for him.

I have another 11-year-old cat. She sleeps a lot. Most of the day is in winter. In summer, she's a little better but sleeps in the garden under the honeysuckle. As the garden is south-facing, she gets the best of both worlds there.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 13/02/2024 11:53

6 year old and 12 year old. They are asleep a lot of the time. A lot of the other time, they are resting. In the summer they are a lot more active, winter is a lot more snoozy. I would say they sleep at least 16 - 18 hours.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 13/02/2024 12:39

House cat. 18 hours a day, roughly. Wants a cuddle in the evenings, plays a bit eats her food, goes back to kip. She's up in the night on mouse patrol, but not for long, about an hour? She's up during the day too to eat and accept scrumbles. But she kips a lot. She's 7.

Cheeesus · 13/02/2024 12:42

Ours used to sleep all day but she’d be out a lot at night having adventures.

TiaSeeya · 13/02/2024 12:44

I seriously have no idea! Do people follow their cats around? Sometime he sleeps at night, sometimes he wakes us all up at 3am madly skittish.

The one constant is that he usually rocks up on the sofa about 9pm and sits with us for a bit watching telly. Beyond that I have no idea. He has a cat flap (well, three actually) and in nice weather is outside a lot. Sometimes he sleeps outside. I think. Seriously how do ppl know?!

He doesn’t sleep in the same place much. One week it’ll be one of the beds, another week under a table, another week a chair, sometimes the landing. Sometimes the top of the stairs to trip us all up. 🤨

He is 14 next week.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/02/2024 14:24

Our two are somewhere between 14-16 years old.
The sleep between 18-20 hours a day.

Lazy wee madams.

The ginger one is currently snoring on a poof next to me as I WFH, every now and then she gets the dreaming jitters and meows to herself so I have to reach out to her to comfort her.

When I come back in a future life, I want to be a cat in a home like this one.

Jowak1 · 13/02/2024 14:27

My cat Beatrix is 4 years old and mainly sleeps, looks out the window, sits next to me on the table as I wfh and plays. She goes out for about 10 mins in the morning then in the afternoon. She doesn't go far though and is always coming back every 15 minutes and jumping on my Laptop 💻

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/02/2024 14:39

After a preprandial constitutional in the morning they have breakfast and then sleep inside for most of the day. They may stir for the odd snack but that's about it.

They wake up in time for dinner and are active-ish in the evening, playing and going in and out a lot, although they are still happy to grab a lap if they're feeling tired after all the exertions of a hard day. They are usually in, and asleep (on our bed) at night, although one of the little furry buggers likes a chat for five minutes at 4.00 most mornings.
So I reckon they usually sleep for about 18-20 hours a day.

We have two 6 year olds and two 13 year olds.

To prove the point, this is the current cat status at Grumpy's house...

I have a cat who's 10 in April. She will wake up around 5-6 and start pestering for her breakfast then go outside for a bit then go back to sleep around 9-10 until mid afternoon then go back to sleep early evening then be active for a bit then go back to sleep around 10

YogaLite · 13/02/2024 14:53

From my limited experience of cats, male cats tend to get out more and further away to explore and female tend to be a bit more cautious venturing out.

Mistymornin · 13/02/2024 15:02

My cat is 14, he has never really been an outdoor cat. He wakes me between 7/8 for food, I go back to bed. After food he joins us for about an hour then we all get up. He pops outside for a bit, comes in then sleeps until about 4 ish then it's food, outside for a few minutes then back to bed for a 3/4 hours. He has a snack about 8/9 then settles down for the night!
