If you have a cat, how much time do they spend sleeping/relaxing?

How much time throughout the day do your cats spend sleeping or chilling out, as opposed to playing or going outside? And how old are they?

We sort of nearly have a cat. My neighbours cat sits on my garden bench in the sunshine and refuses to move if i fancy sitting there. Its like i have a cheek to ask. And when i come home and he's sat there, he sort of looks at me with disdain as I'm trudging up the path.

I love his attitude.

Aw she’ll be fine op. Even young cats sleep a lot! And more so as they get older. Make sure she has some toys to play with if she gets the urge as she is young. Mine love boxes - cut out a few holes for them to play with. Also cat tunnels can be fun. Added pic to show what the Purplecat Posse spend most of their time doing (that is Purplecat Three snoozing on top of the kitchen unit!)

We also have a hotel at the end of the road. It’s only open for about 5 months of the year in summer. Sometimes they bring tour buses. Our cat likes to wait until a bus arrives, sit at the door, and demands ever visitor getting off the couch strokes him. This delays debarking a lot and annoys the drivers.

He also can activate the automatic hotel entrance doors. Then just wanders in, probably looking for the Breakfast buffet.

He used to ride on top of the footmuff on Ds pram in winter, and underneath in basket in summer if he couldn’t be bothered walking

2 cats both almost 5.

One sleeps about 20 hours a day. The other probably about 16.

The one who sleeps 20 hours spends the other 4 hours terrorising the house and the one who sleeps 16 spends the other 8 hours judging us.

Girl cat is 3. She hates cold or rain so refuses to go out. Instead, she's like a stroppy teenager, really bored and hanging around trying to start trouble. My carpets have taken quite a hammering the last few months. She catnaps rather than sleeps so is up and down all day.

Boy cat is 2. He wants to be outside at every opportunity. He likes an afternoon nap then back out until bedtime.

Startingagainandagain · 13/02/2024 09:00

Mine is just over a year old and she is also very active.

She sleeps at night thankfully (on my bed) but beyond that she is active during the day and evening (goes outside a bit, taunts the neighbour's cat, plays with toys and cat tree and likes to watch what's happening in the streets and the birds from the top floor windows, runs around the house a lot and messes up rugs, plants and so on).

A real contrast from my previous cat who was older when I got her and spend the majority of her time sleeping and eating...

Overtheatlantic · 13/02/2024 09:00

My 9 year old sleeps overnight in her bed downstairs then comes upstairs around 5am to put in her breakfast order. She then goes out to do a brief patrol of the garden and then comes back upstairs for cuddles with me. After that she sleeps all day on my bed until 6 and then has dinner and evening relaxation in the garden. In the summer she spends most of her time sleeping in the garden. She is a sun worshipper.

Mine is 3
He spends most of the day between asleep, having zoomies, yelling at the birds or trying to eat plastic

He’s gorgeous! I love black cats!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/02/2024 09:10

One ancient cat. She sleeps all day, all night and probably gets up for about an hour in total for food, litter tray and standing on my ribs at 3am telling me how much she loves me. This doesn't change if we're home, other than she then gets to occupy DP's office chair (she's not allowed in there unsupervised) for 8-10 hours of it.

The other one is 12. He sleeps whilst we're out, wakes up when we're in around 5pm, pootles around, has a play, eats and then gets settled for his first bedtime around 8.45pm, gets up just around 9.30, gives us the look just after 10 and is snoring again by 10.45pm. Gets up around 4am to sing the song of his people and use the litter tray, then comes back to bed once DP is up until I get up around 5.45am. He's then up until we leave.

It's just gone 9am now. So he's probably on the landing over the hot water pipe or at the end of the bed.

Mine has become a nap master. Probably sleeps a good 16 hours plus. She likes the radio on for company 🐈.

She gets us all up, we get petted with her paws and then has breakfast. She then takes a wander outside watches the children head off and then shower and nap. She generally joins me for a brief chat at 11.Then back to nap.

Some afternoons if I am on a teams call that she feels strongly about she joins in
.

My 7 year old I get about 20 minutes movement a day from! He is renowned for his laziness!!! He has been known to roll instead of walk to the next patch of sun… and we had to put him on a special low calorie diet due to lack of movement! I reckon he sleeps most of the time and spends most of his waking hours grooming. I reckon 16-18 hours asleep though

The 10 year old sleeps a whole lot less! 12 hours sleep I would guess. They both sleep through the night, get up for breakfast and go back to sleep. My 7 year old will sleep through til at least 3/4 but the 10 year old wants interaction and activity between 11-1 also before going back to sleep.

From when they wake up til 5pm dinner is absolute chaos, hard core play time! Then they both spend the evening chilling with us and on off napping.

notknowledgeable · 13/02/2024 09:18

cats sleep for two thirds of their life. Twice as much a humans

NeverAHarvester · 13/02/2024 09:26

Ancient cat: can do nothing but sleep in the same box for 23 hours, only leaving to use the litter tray that's about 4 steps away, and the food bowls that's about 8 steps away. Yes it's all probably not supposed to be so close but any further and she just shits on the floor, she's that lazy. Occasionally, about once a fortnight goes a bit mad and decides to trek downstairs and outside, but never for more than 10 minutes.

DCat2: has a routine set around when he thinks he might get food. Generally naps from about 11.30-3.30pm, get up when the kids come back from school in the hope one of them will feed him, then he's asleep until about 10. He won't go outside in wind or rain, and he spends the summer asleep outside and the winter inside asleep. There's a lot of sleeping.

Dcat3: is invisible during the summer because she is Out doing Important Catting. Mainly bringing live mice back from the garages about 5 doors away, we now have our own collection. Her winter routine involves sleeping all day in a hidden location inside and spending the night glaring outside from the top of the open bathroom window. Occasionally she'll get the zoomies and play with an invisible mouse on the stairs, making the same noises she makes with a real mouse, just for shits n giggles.

Here’s my girl last summer

If you have a cat, how much time do they spend sleeping/relaxing?
CrunchyCarrot · 13/02/2024 09:34

One cat who is 3 yrs old. He's up at around 6 a.m. meowing to be let out. I duly oblige after feeding him and he may be out for anything between 1-3 hrs, depending what's caught his attention. Then he will be back, will try to extort more food, get denied and will huff off to have a sleep.

At this time of year he will sleep for most of the day until the light begins to fail, then he's up, wants food and will go out again for several hours. Of course if it's tipping down he will come in sooner, or may just sit out under the porch and watch the world go by. He does like a game before bedtime, I've noticed, as he has a lot of energy then.

In summer it's a different matter. He'll be awake early and be out for far longer. He too will follow us on walks but I'm not comfortable letting him come too far from home. He's the first of our cats to do this, all the others would pause at their comfort boundary and not follow further.

Horrace · 13/02/2024 09:42

My cats are lazy bastards.
Honestly, they do fuck all.
Apart from my wee ginger boy who follows me everywhere, won't leave alone for a second. Taps my face til I wake up, sits on my keyboard whilst I work, then sits on my shoulder tapping my face all night til I go to bed.
I love them all

Mabelface · 13/02/2024 09:49

This beastie sleeps for around 18 hours per day, with the rest playing, demanding attention or food.

My 17 year old can go in and out has she like unusually goes for mooch in the garden for a couple of hours a day. She probably sleep 14-16 hours a day.

Mammma91 · 13/02/2024 09:53

I have 3, all sleep through the night, breakfast, play, hound members of the household for more food, sleep more and maybe wonder outside again before bed. Eldest 2 are 6&7 and don’t go out after 6:30. Youngest is 2 and is out until around 9pm and back out again between 5-6am when DP gets up. Cats are up earlier in the morning in the summer.

I love a cat thread. Im allergic to them and have never had or really wanted to have a cat. They are too bossy and independent for meGrin.

But i do love reading of others having them.

One complaint is though....where are the pictures to back up these stories?
I want to see some cute cats please Smile

He’s 7. He does a lot of sprawling!

IcedPlum · 13/02/2024 10:00

My cats always slept after a meal . I wonder if sleep is part of the digestion process?

KnittedCardi · 13/02/2024 10:03

Cat tax. I can never make my bed....

Arthur is usually asleep in the kitchen first thing, after a heavy night on the tiles. DH feeds him, he pops out for a poo/wee, comes upstairs onto my bed, occasionally bringing mud/insects with him. Note the white duvet! Sleeps for the rest of the day. Comes down at 6pm for dinner. Sits with me watching TV. Goes out at 10pm when we go to bed. In the summer he spends all day outside sleeping under a bush.
