I've never been brave enough to give up tea, I tried once, and people begged me to start drinking it again !!! I'm a tea monster-I must drink at least 8 mugs a day, but this is the year to do it 😱What are you giving up?

Men

Trying to slim, so giving up meat, animal fat and large portions even of cooked vegetarian meals. Keeping all the rest, but cutting my daily intake to a half of what I usually eat. So kind of quite a moderate, traditional fast. I love coffee , honey and diary, so not sure will I be giving up on these three , perhaps not.

Lessstressedhemum · 13/02/2024 14:52

Swearing! Having been completely non sweaty my entire life, the last few months have seen my language descend into the gutter. It's shocking, tbh, I've turned into a sailor and I'm not sure why. So, it's got to go.
I should really try to give up my lusting after Dan Vasc, as well, because that's embarrassing and totally age inappropriate.

I'll also take on a bit more prayer, bible study and silent contemplation.

My friend did tea last year, she reckons she was on 17 cups a day (and is again now).

I really feel for her colleagues 🤣

I'm doing refined sugar, which is hard for a week, then you stop wanting it... until you fall off the wagon

We don’t give up anything as such, we do a Lent Box - the same principle as a reverse Advent Calendar. Every day something goes in the box and at Easter (or just before) it goes to the local food bank. DS used to be really enthusiastic at about it when he was younger.

This is a lovely idea. I'm going to start this with my daughter Flowers

BebbanburgIsMine · 13/02/2024 15:51

Nothing, as I'm Pagan.

I don't know anyone who gives up anything, just not a thing with my family or friends.

Lansonmaid · 13/02/2024 15:57

Alcohol - did it a few years ago and although it seemed a long 40 days I did feel better for it.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/02/2024 16:01

I have decided I am going to try not to argue or be sarcastic to others on MN! I'm not realistic enough to think I'll stay off completely but if a thread or poster annoys me I shall just close it down rather than feeling I have to respond .

(Normally give up eating all animal products but as I'm on holiday I don't think that is realistic !)

I don't get what's wrong with drinking tea? The calories from the milk..? It isn't unhealthy is it?

Nothing wrong with it at all....I completely depend on it, love it, anticipate it-a huge mug of malty Assam with just a splash of milk. Now I'm talking myself out of giving it up for 6 weeks...oh dear 😳

Like every lent, I am giving up candy.
I eat way too much candy the rest of the year.

LittleFiendSusan · 13/02/2024 16:41

I'm giving up watching tv in the evenings, it's so boring and I'd rather potter around the house doing bits here and there.

Gazelda · 13/02/2024 16:54

Snacking. No eating between meals at all.

Apart from 2 days when I'm away with my closest friends and can't imagine not succumbing to cake.

mondaytosunday · 13/02/2024 16:56

Alcohol. I do it every year as a tribute to my mother who used to do it too, and she LOVED her wine.

But today it's gonna pancakes pancakes pancakes. I'm even doing savoury ones, I made leeks and ham in cheese sauce last week, and froze a bit of the ham and the sauce, reckoning that that with tiny button mushrooms would be good, and different from the bacon and maple syrup or lemon and sugar that will also happen in the vicinity of pancakes today.

Maybe salad for lunch though. Maybe.

That sounds like the nicest savoury option I've ever heard of for pancakes! Will have to try it soon!

Butchyrestingface · 14/02/2024 17:30

Tea is about the one thing I haven't given up. But I only drink black decaf with no sugar so I'm sure Jesus would approve.

Danik8 · 14/02/2024 17:33

Sugar. Fruit allowed, but no chocolate, biscuits, cakes, desserts. It will be hard!

icingonthecake7 · 14/02/2024 17:50

Amazon 🙄
spent wayyyy too much on there last year

Bargello · 14/02/2024 18:19

Nothing. It's not a "thing" round this way, was brought up Church of Scotland who didn't do the giving stuff up, the only people I know who do it are practising Catholics. I have no religious beliefs at all so don't see the point really.

Witchbitch20 · 14/02/2024 18:58

Chickpeas

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 14/02/2024 20:13

To the person asking what's wrong with tea - obviously nothing. People often get the wrong idea about lent - it's meant to be a sacrifice/ something to bring you closer to god. So, giving up things to make yourself slimmer/healthier etc are fine, but not in the spirit, if that makes sense!

BarelyLiterate · 14/02/2024 20:15

Religion. Same as every other year since I was 15.
