Is your living room at the front or back of the house?

I’m just curious to see what’s more common.

OP you need a poll!

Very surprised by all the people saying their living room is at the back and their kitchen is at the front (like mine is).

Always thought people wanted an open plan kitchen diner that stretched the full length of the back of the house onto the garden, these days.

Front. Terrace Victorian with usual extension across the back. Kitchen in the middle open plan to the extension with wall of glass to garden. There are big double glass doors to match between the kitchen/dining and living room.

ManchesterLu · 12/02/2024 16:31

The front. I'd prefer it at the back, overlooking the garden, but it doesn't really matter. I can't imagine having the kitchen at the front, so I don't know what I'd do with that.

HideTheCow · 12/02/2024 16:31

On the back with a French door bay window and I love opening up the doors, they lock into place open. I love being able to just sit and look at the back garden. I don't see any people or cars, it is bliss.

The front. The kitchen and dining room is at the back.

HideTheCow · 12/02/2024 16:34

@ManchesterLu my kitchen is also on the back next to the lounge so not a one or the other choice. My dining room is at the front along with a double garage which we converted into a playroom for the children.

naffall · 12/02/2024 16:35

The back I prefer it as it's south facing and I like to look at the street when I'm doing the dishes because I'm nosy.

justasking111 · 12/02/2024 16:37

Bedrooms at the front facing north cool in the summer. Sitting room and kitchen at the side and back overlooking the mountains south and west so very sunny. It gets too hot in a heatwave if I don't close windows, draw blinds and curtains though

It's a through lounge so goes from front to back.

Same. Two windows on the front of the house end and patio doors at the back.

Ilovemyshed · 12/02/2024 16:48

One of each.. living room and snug at the front, open plan living space as part of kitchen at the back.

LER83 · 12/02/2024 16:57

My living room is at the front, which the front door opens directly into. The living room is open to the dining room which is at the back and has patio doors to the garden. The kitchen is also at the back. I hate it! Would much prefer sitting looking out at the garden then the bloody neighbours! The whole house layout is weird, so much wasted space!

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 12/02/2024 16:58

Both at the back, townhouse so living room is above kitchen

ani4ani · 12/02/2024 17:18

Neither or both perhaps? It's on the side. Gets all the morning and evening light, making it warm in the mornings and evenings and cool in blazing summer days.

HurdyGurdy19 · 12/02/2024 17:19

We have a lounge/diner, with the lounge at the front and dining area at the back, next to the kitchen

Fumnudge · 12/02/2024 17:53

Was at the front, we extended off the back of the house with the main thought being to have the living room at the rear.
I love it

NeedWineNow · 12/02/2024 18:07

Little Victorian cottage. Front door opens straight into living room which leads through to dining room, then through door to lobby where bathroom is and then into kitchen at the back. Don't mind the layout, and it's big enough for us, but I do miss having a hallway, especially in wet weather. Looking to create a small porch area at the front to at least be able to take off wet coats and put brollies.

Yes, to be fair we have a tiny porch area built into the front room (office/dining room) that allows for boot removal.etc. so it's not quite direct access to the front room.

My new house has the living room at the back and the kitchen on the front. I absolutely love it. I can sit and look at the garden. My last house was the other way round and I had to look at parked cars and screaming kids racing up and down the road on electric scooters.

Tarquina · 12/02/2024 19:23

Back.

JL690 · 12/02/2024 19:28

Mine is in the middle. Lounge is at the front, hallway is beside it and leads to that and the living room behind it. Kitchen and dining room behind the living room. My central living room stays cosy most days without any heating.

dontcallmelen · 12/02/2024 19:32

Living room at the front, dining room in the middle kitchen/snug at the back but can see the garden from the living room as the living room/dining room is sort of half knocked through & we have large half glazed doors in the dining room which open into the snug part of the kitchen then french doors into the garden house is very light even though the front is north facing.

Chewbecca · 12/02/2024 19:37

Mine's at the back but I still call it the front room. First time I have ever lived in a house this way round and really like it.
I think older houses from Victorian right through to 60/70s houses generally originally had a living room at the front and kitchen / dining room across the rear. 80s onwards house design has changed it around a bit.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 12/02/2024 19:41

Kitchen at the back, sitting room at the front, and dining room in between.

I love the privacy of the dining room. And it's so useful that I can keep an eye on my very young children playing the garden while I cook in the kitchen.

I can see that with older children I might enjoy it the other way round so that the sitting room feels more private. But ultimately I just fancy moving to somewhere a bit isolated anyway.

salamithumbs · 12/02/2024 19:41

Mine goes from the front to the back but we call it the front room ... this is the first time I've noticed it 🤣

Thepossibility · 12/02/2024 19:51

Middle. Master suite and garage are front, Two bedrooms are out the back, everything else in between.
