Ever been on holiday where you couldn't wait to come home

OK I'm in the sun and it's February...but I'm stuck on an where nothing to do except snorkel and its too windy.

The hotel needs serious updating, there are cocks crowing all night, the breakfast was minimal. The advertised beach is lovely but literally a beach. My alternative plan of lying on the beach reading are scuppered by no umbrella or lounger.

The hire car is a worryingly battered piece of shit.

I'm being churlish but there's a long 5 days stretching out in front of me.

Honestly some stories of shit holidays would help!

When I was pregnant with DD & suffering horrendous all day sickness we went in our motorhome to france….
I t was booked before I fell pregnant and DH insisted on still going… we Ferry’d over, drove from north to south france (me clutching a bucket and puking most of the way)… got all the way down there and had maybe 2 days of sun on the beach / by the pool then the rain started… we drove back up south over the course of 3 weeks, stopping at various different camp sites… each time we parked up and booked in for a few days the rain would start! One place advertised a gorgeous heated pool from May onwards … and mid June it had a few inches of green water and was
neing filled with a tiny garden hose…. It would’ve taken probably a week to fill them weeks to heat up!
Another site we visited was filthy and we couldn’t use the shower blocks because they were vile…. It rained the whole 3 weeks and we were stuck pretty much in the motorhome watching tv and playing scrabble!…
It was horrible being pregnant , puking and being stuck in a motorhome !
never again!!!

Got stuck in Penang for a few days! Rats the size of cats run around the streets. Very hot very smelly and felt generally unsafe. It was horrible. Also got stuck in Phuket and that was horrible too.

Went on a girls holiday to Portugal, with my friend and her sister who I didn’t know. The sister was a bitch and I basically spent most of the holiday on my own, even had to go out and eat on my own! I tried to get a flight home but it was too expensive so had to wait. The longest week of my life!

Are you still friends with the friend?

WickedSerious · 13/02/2024 21:41

We went to Malta in 2016,we were there for ten days and it pissed down for nine of them.
The one day it didn't rain it was too hot to move.

pontipinemum · 13/02/2024 21:41

Benidorm. WTF were we actually thinking. In my defence it was about 7 months after we got married and I couldn't be arsed booking a big holiday like we'd normally do and booked a package holiday.

People pissed and yelling at each other from one side of the pool at 10am.
We were late in the 1st night the 'restaurant' we went to I go a Margherita pizza oil dripped off it.

We were dragging into a comedy show. Not a single part of the sexist, racist, homophobic rant was funny. And there were children there.

There were toddlers in prams abandoned in the corners of nightclubs.

Going for breakfast one morning we saw a couple in their 60s basically dry humping on a table this was maybe 9am

And I'm not a snowflake but it was disgraceful

Honeymoon in the Dom Rep for two of the most boring weeks of our lives. I think we booked it because it was the thing to do back in the day. I scraped the money together to go, hated it. We were told not to leave the resort because it was dangerous. We did a couple of interesting day trips but I felt too self conscious to get into a wetsuit to go diving.

My DH got food poisoning so was out of action for days, no wonder, the fab looking buffet was just covered in armies of ants busily hauling away everything and there was an invasion of starlings removing everything else on a constant. I don’t know why we didn’t just book flights home. Probably because my parents were staying in our flat!

Havinganamechange · 13/02/2024 21:52

I remember a god damn awful holiday in Tenerife which was so not my vibe. It was with an ex partner I was trying to avoid most of the time, the apartment we had borrowed had no air con and I was covered in prickly heat and felt like scratching myself to death. Plus I spent most of it crying in the realization that we wanted different things and I was just unhappy with my other half. Not a great time in my life but glad to say I have moved on.

Odingodof · 13/02/2024 21:56

@Merrow the worst most consistent torrential rain I've ever experienced was in Spain. Absolutely nothing on the UK. It went on unrelenting for days.

Odingodof · 13/02/2024 21:58

@ButtonMoon5 where!!! Graffiti!

@Shodan oh how awful! Absolutely awful.

Cherrysoup · 13/02/2024 21:59

Another one! I decided to surprise my parents by joining them on a Greek island for the 2nd week of their holiday with mum’s sister and her family, including 3 small dc. I was on a school trip in France the week before when I got a call from my Dh to say my dad had very unexpectedly died. Mum still went to the island or she’d have been left alone. Obviously I hated it. The hotel refused to put on the aircon, I can’t stand the heat. All my family wanted was to go to the beaches every day, I’m not a beach person. It was an horrific experience. The local priest from mum’s area was in contact organising my dad’s funeral daily. The plane home was a blur of sobbing, the air stewards were really worried about me, bless them.

2 weeks in Florida. Early 2000s. Booked at travel agent. Took travellers cheques from money saved. Booked room only. Pre internet booking type days. Arrived at the ‘motel’ we had booked which was basically like a poor persona’s travel lodge just off international drive. Everyone had told us it was cheap as chips to eat in the USA. Went to prove up the all you could eat buffet breakfast placed attached to motel and it cost more than we had anticipated. Had a look around other places to prove up other meals and realised the travellers cheques we brought were going to cover meals but not both Disney and universal. Had to make a choice between universal or Disney and went for universal. Got a multi day pass. We then spent a lot of time wandering up and down international drive looking for cheap entertainment and things to for the rest of our time there. It was the longest two weeks ever. In fact we have never had a 2 week holidays since and have always ended up going a week. We had no credit cards then, I actually went and got a store card so that I conked get credit built up to get a credit card for future. We possibly did have other money in our bank accounts at home but just didn’t have access to it in Florida. We were very young, not long out of uni, sort full year working and saved up for it.

@Aposterhasnoname

😱😱😂😂 Escape curtailed by poor baby...

Crikeyalmighty · 13/02/2024 22:08

@AnnieSnap I had an experience like that in my first marriage - except mine involved a camp site in Brittany and endless rain and I spent most of my time doing endless washing and drying in a rather grubby laundry room!!

Apolloneuro · 13/02/2024 22:15

Two weeks in a very highly rated, TUI, all inclusive, in Cyprus. Bloody hell. Talk about Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come.

Full to the brim with thick, ‘Brits abroad’. Heard so much crap spouted, guests being rude to the staff and the food was crap.

The night we arrived, the entertainment was merrily being accompanied in a rendition of ‘Alice, Alice who the f**k is Alice.’

Never seen so many mobility scooters in one place before.

So traumatised us that we can’t bring ourselves to book another holiday, just yet.

Odingodof · 13/02/2024 22:16

@BusyMummy001!!
How on earth do you get get hold of antibiotics? AND why rinse ears with mottle water, isn't there an ear plug or cover you can use? Shower cap etc

Hocuspocusnonsense · 13/02/2024 22:20

T1Dmama No I’m not.

Odingodof · 13/02/2024 22:25

I was randomly sent to a seaside cabin, hut to stay with my sisters husbands sister, her husband and two children.

Only them and I barely knew them. He had those huge fluffy side burns all down his face. Their boys melt farting, and looking ashamed. The parents severely reprimanded the each time.

The worst part was suddenly finding myself in the middle of a god March thru the town, holding a banner for Christ and people singing holy songs all around me.
Then I was a bit fairly regular catholic church goer but this was hideous. I've never felt so embarrassed and out of place I can't understand why my sister did it to me! She was a lot older

Odingodof · 13/02/2024 22:43

@Mothership4two I've eaten on hay boat. I think Amsterdam very much depends on what area your based in. It was very clean and classy where we were.

13 hour flight with a toddler and an infant. The toddler brought norovirus on the plane which we found out about 3 hours in. She covered an air hostess, another passenger, herself and my husband in sick outside the toilet. DH arrived at our destination in airline PJs without his clothes as they were in chemical waste disposal. We then all got norovirus one by one and barely left the hotel room on our trip. Infant almost had to go to the hospital in a non English speaking country as he was so sick. We regretted that one from the moment the sickness started on the plane 🤦‍♀️.

Oh noooo. This is literally my worst nightmare! My kids are 5 and 7 but we are waiting until they are older to go abroad. Well done for getting through it.

Penang is nice, as is most of Phuket

Many years ago with one of my best friends. it supposed to be a girl time alone, little did I know that it was what she told her mum to get permission, and her boyfriend was waiting on the other end of the bus ride. He took us to his house 3 hours away in the middle of nowhere, with nothing to do. Then 1 day sleeping there when I told her I am not comfortable sleeping in someone's house that I barely know and that city would be one of my last choices to have a holiday as there was nothing to do..they agreed we would stay in a hotel near the seaside city 1 hour away, then friend's bf found the cheapest accommodation available, it was so dodgy, I think main reason for hotel's existence was to provide somewhere to sleep for prostitutes and their customers. she guilttripped me when I said I wantted to leave saying her mum would kill her if I go back and she stays, her mum only let her go to holiday because I was there, bla bla...It was after uni and I was naive enough... but really I counted my days to go back home...for a long time friend said it was the best holiday she ever had and we should do it again and I was like "...sure.." the city was quite popular turistic city it was just the people I was with was crap..when I offered I wanted to spend time at the beach and they can go do whatever they wanted to do, apparently I needed to go to places together with them as well. I was a third wheel whole time and I was not allowed to have me time because it was our holiday and we should do everything together whatever she and her boyfriend decided to do. Most uncomfortable and boring holiday...
