OK I'm in the sun and it's February...but I'm stuck on an where nothing to do except snorkel and its too windy.

The hotel needs serious updating, there are cocks crowing all night, the breakfast was minimal. The advertised beach is lovely but literally a beach. My alternative plan of lying on the beach reading are scuppered by no umbrella or lounger.

The hire car is a worryingly battered piece of shit.

I'm being churlish but there's a long 5 days stretching out in front of me.

Honestly some stories of shit holidays would help!

Got stuck in Egypt due to the Icelandic volcano erupting. The hotel kicked us out, as it had been over by Thomas Cook purely for their customers. We managed to find another hotel, where we stayed for 11 days, but it was ghastly. The food was awful, it was in the middle of nowhere, everything was filthy, the wiring was dangerous, the pools were grim - fortunately none of us got sick. We had flown with BA, who only operates two flights a week and priority was given to their own staff before we could rebook. Once planes were allowed to fly again, we could only watch them fly over, desperately wishing we were going home. A couple of weeks later, that hotel was featured on Holiday Nightmares TV programme.

@Doyouthinktheyknow please can I ask which Eurocamp site along Lake Garda?

purplecorkheart · 13/02/2024 18:27

Gozo, went for a week. Major rain storms from the day after we arrived until we left. Caused power cuts all the week

The pools overflowed flooding the ground floor apartments, restaurant, hotel lobby etc. Most of the time you could not leave the hotel grounds. The apartment was not as described. It was described as four star but it was across between and two star. Kitchen was so poor but no restaurants open nearby due to weather so had to buy cutlery, pot etc as ones there were caked in rust.

We were lucky that there was a Supermarket within a few minutes that we used to basically paddle to that sold a bit of everything. Also the people in the apartments on our floor banded together a bit and swapped books, wine, chocolate etc.

Good thing was that a good few people left before we did and must have also been unhappt. We were contacted by the Holiday Company the day after we got home saying they were offering us a significant partial refund as the Apartments were not as advertised and that they would no longer being using them. We hadn't even contacted them.

A luxury holiday where a family member did nothing but moan about everything.

We were incredibly privileged to be able to have such an amazing holiday and to visit so many beautiful places, but no, I had to endure moaning about the airport, the air con, the food, the drink, the entertainment, the heat, the expectation that they walk more than ten metres, walk up a hill, be spoken to in a foreign language and on and on.

Thank fuck I had a good relationship with the person I shared a room with or I’d have gone loopy.

And I bet when they returned they told everyone they had a great time Hmm my nan does this

My DS and I went camping in Brittany with friends who, though I did not know beforehand, were on the brink of divorce and argued constantly. The site was in a river valley outside a non descript town. The day we planned to visit the nearest city, we missed the one bus, so went to the town's arboretum expecting trees but it turned out to be the local mental hospital. On the next to last night, there was a massive storm that turned the river into a raging torrent. The Dutchman, whose motor home was parked next to our tent, planned to check it hourly, and said they were sleeping in their clothes ready to evacuate if the river broke its banks. It did. We struggled up the hill to the car through the rain and found the campsite owner, who had evacuated his goats, had padlocked the gates so we couldn't get out. 5 of us tried to sleep in the small car but in the end gave up and trudged back to our tents. In the morning we woke to much hilarity about the cowardly anglais from other campers who had been too drunk to care about a leetle bit of water.

the80sweregreat - were you there the same time as me? 2 weeks in Zante in September, rained every day, got stung at the corner of the eye by a mosquito which led to me looking like I'd done a round in the ring with Rocky, leading to a trip to the local walk-in centre, and all the locals telling us 'we haven't had weather like this here in September for at least 10 years. Thanks. Very helpful!

You're not in Barbados are you? Sounds very much like where I've just been. Extremely overrated, everyone you meet has a 'dengue' virus story and its £8 for a bag of crisps. Never again.

Newnamesoembarrassed · 13/02/2024 19:04

WhitsablE when I was a child

STANK of fish 🤮🤢

rained 24/7 and I’m still cold now from that holiday

caravan with no electricity or toilet

my mums boyfriend took us all and she begged us to pretend we were having fun

Apparently it’s quite nice there now, but I’ve been put off for life

Primmyhill · 13/02/2024 19:14

Yep, went to Turkey and the hotel aircon wasn’t working in 40 degree heat. The couple in the room next door argued day and night and the police were called. My husband lost his wallet and had to cancel his cards. The food was buffet style and absolute crap and all I ate was fruit. Roll on to day 4 of a 10 day holiday and I had the worst d&v ever! Literally couldn’t make it to the bathroom and mopped it up with the hotel white towels and then had to get hubby to sneak out and bin them. Honestly, it was the holiday from hell and I just wanted to be in rainy, cold England. We have a good old laugh about it now but at the time it was horrendous. To top it all off I then shit myself on the plane on the way home and got an Imodium off one of the cabin crew. The absolute shame of it. So don’t tell me you’re having a bad time!😂

greenbeansnspinach · 13/02/2024 19:15

Our honeymoon , kindly paid for by mother in law. Turned out to be an old people’s hotel - everything was falling to bits and we were housed in a sort of portakabin. It was wet and foggy. We both had bad flu. We just lay there for two days. We laugh about it now .

AdaHozen · 13/02/2024 19:18

Think yourself lucky OP. I once left the booking of a short holiday to my DH. Do you know where he took us?

Barbados last year. I was counting the days until I could go home. Literally nothing to do other than sit on the beach. Distinct lack of anywhere to eat out other than the outdoor fish market sat on plastic chairs at folding plastic tables while chickens and cats ran about under your feet. Public transport was unbelievably stressful. Abandoned falling apart houses everywhere. Very very run down. I found the people really nice though.

We did 10 days in Barbados. 2 boat trips, one tour around the island on our own, the fish market was great, we went horse riding on the beach, went to two small museums which were really well done.

We took a cab (yes, bit of a crazy minibus) twice to eat out and could have done more but liked the restaurants at our hotel.

RavenhairedRachel · 13/02/2024 19:21

A resort in the Algarve. The day we arrived it was raining. That was yje least of.our worries. The hotel was huge but there were only half a dozen British families. (Even though we booked with a well known British travel agent ) All the guests stared at us as if we were aliens. So all the entertainment was geared around the German guests, so was the cuisine. There were no restaurants or shops apart from the hotel shop which opened a couple of hours a day. It was liked being dumped in yje middle of the Gobi desert thats literally all that was there a huge beach. We had 2 young kids we had to go.to neighbouring resorts by bus or taxi just to find something to do and eat. They thought Burger King was a banquet. Absolutely awful holiday we couldn't wait to get home.

I get a bit fed up after a week and however lovely the resort is, I miss my home and routines.

I’ve had some fabulous holidays in 5star resorts but I’m usually rather pleased to leave.

The best holidays have been UK activity holidays. I’ve come home feeling amazing.

Can you share any recommendations, Minerva?

Really? Sa Coma is lovely. Nice beach, nice walk to the castle, nice walk to Sa Illiot and a nice walk up to Cala Millor.

Odiebay · 13/02/2024 19:25

Got norovirus in Greece. In August. Absolutely boiling. Bloody awful. Early packed and waiting to go. Have never been so happy to get on a plane to come home!

Timeforanotheraliasnow · 13/02/2024 19:26

Sailing holiday with my parents, sister, BIL and now DH(then DP). 2 weeks of sea sickness on a tiny yacht whilst BIL showed off skippering. I have never been more miserable.

That's exactly how other people react IRL when I tell them. And I'm not even remotely making it up. I really wish I wasn't.

I went on a summer holiday in UK with baby, toddler, DH, MIL and FIL. Heavy rain all day every day. Seagulls waking us up at crack of dawn every morning too. Just awful.

Sillyname63 · 13/02/2024 19:39

We went to Portugal in a villa owned by someone I worked alongside, ( I did pay for it) the place was deserted, loads of villas but honestly we did not see another person on the complex all week, it was October. We used to walk about 15 mins down to the restaurants in the evening, which were full , and there were a few complexes In the surrounding them but you just did not see going for a stroll either before or after food like you do in Spain , even the little cafe bar we went to we were sometimes the only two people there. The weather was up and down all week between weak sunshine and heavy rain. We walked the coastal path didn't see a sole after We left a little cove We came across , which did have quite a few families on it but no where to sit and watch the world except the rocks. We went into the nearest town on two days and that was a bit more going on but the market had all finished by 11.00am. So we never got to see that.
I definitely would not go back. To top it off, the villas drains blocked due to heavy rain.

Not mine but an ex-neighbour of mine. She booked a holiday in Tenerife for her and her friend to get some winter sun.

Both in their late-70s. Both widowed. Both quiet, book-ish, church-going women.
Somehow she misread and misunderstood the website and booked them into an 18-30 resort.
Every other apartment in the complex was young, rowdy, incomprehensibly naked people, getting drunk, taking drugs, getting laid, vomiting, passing out anywhere and everywhere they could find.

Still, they looked forward to the vineyard tour she'd booked for them on day two. Only 'vineyard tour' turned out to be a massive 12-hour bar crawl through San Antonio. About an hour into the 'vineyard tour', they decided they'd had enough and asked the reps to help them get back to the complex and then move to different accommodation.
But the holiday reps were terrible, as bad as the holiday-makers. They didn't give a shit and made no attempts to help.
Fortunately, a group of the young folks took pity on the two ladies and helped them get into another hotel (albeit a bit grubby) for the rest of their holiday.

Edited

🤣🤣🤣

Cairo. I was there for work and tagged on a few days at the start to see the pyramids and other historic sites. My goodness. The history was incredible but there were awful men everywhere who wouldn't leave me alone. My private tour guide buggered off and left me to fend for myself at one spot, where I was followed around by a man insisting on "guiding" me, then another one tried to pick me up and put me on his donkey. Luckily I'm fat and he couldn't manage it! I was too scared to leave my hotel room at night. When I moved into my fancy work hotel, the male waiter at dinner was professional and non-creepy. I was so relieved that I cried.

The only other holiday I couldn't wait to get home from was a Haven camping trip. The DC were 5 and 2 and I'd only become a single parent a few weeks before. I was absolutely exhausted, camping was hard work and the last day was forecast to rain so we packed up and left a day early.

Ladymeade · 13/02/2024 19:51

The Gambia...

Couldn't stand it. My husband booked it as he wanted winter sun (whereas I wanted snow and mountains - and now my ex) It was all inclusive and I felt like an absolute tourist and that our stay wasn't really benefiting the local economy. We were told to tip absolute peanuts to the staff and the reps scared the sh8t out of us wrt booking trips and excursions that didn't go through them (would invalidate our travel insurance yadda yadda) Hawkers everywhere if you went outside the razor wired hotel grounds.

Probably should have known better but this was before the days of the internet so couldn't really research it and I was a young naive thing then.

Definitely couldn't wait to get home!
