OK I'm in the sun and it's February...but I'm stuck on an where nothing to do except snorkel and its too windy.

The hotel needs serious updating, there are cocks crowing all night, the breakfast was minimal. The advertised beach is lovely but literally a beach. My alternative plan of lying on the beach reading are scuppered by no umbrella or lounger.

The hire car is a worryingly battered piece of shit.

I'm being churlish but there's a long 5 days stretching out in front of me.

Honestly some stories of shit holidays would help!

Cape Verde, OP?

Oh no! Don’t say that! We are going in a couple of weeks. All I want to do is swim in the pool, read my book and have someone else cook dinner.

I went to Tenerife years ago, had planned to hire a car but got pick pocketed the night before and lost my license. Two days later went on a boat trip and asked a women to take a photo of my girlfriend and I and before she took the photo ahe slipped and dropped the camera in the sea. Oh well.

I mentioned Egypt earlier but I think the worst ones are when your relationship is going up the Swanee but hasn't come to a head and you are kind of stuck and feel you have to be seen to be having a good time when really you are thinking 'I would enjoy this- on my own or with a friend'

I had one of those, so as a holiday, it was poor, but I had time to think and plan. I was with my (ex) husband in a beautiful villa, with a gorgeous pool and garden. We could pick oranges from the trees and swim in the perfect amount of sun and shade. Part way through, I was sitting reading in the shade by the pool. I looked-up at him stretched out baking in the sun and felt resentful because we had sod all in common and nothing to say to each other, when such a lovely place should surely be enjoyed by people who made each other happy. I suddenly had the thought “I can’t do this anymore“, I’m done! I knew in that moment that our 29-year marriage was over. Weirdly, I hadn’t gradually come to that conclusion. It was sudden and certain! I didn’t tell him until we got home and had recovered from the worst of the jet lag!

Are you in Lanzarote by any chance? We had such shit hire cars there

We had a very nice new hire car in Lanzarote. Got out and about a lot and found the island spotless, friendly and lovely 😮

Thecurtainsarewonky · 13/02/2024 20:04
  1. backpacking round Australia in my early 20s. Cried most of the way round (v homesick) and came home a couple of weeks early (3month trip).
  2. Malta. It was shit. Went for 2 weeks and came home after 1.
  3. Greece with small children. The worst night I was up 14 times with the 2 of them. Hubby and I borrowed the resorts ‘out n about’ overnight and would be trekking the country lanes if the green island at 4.30am alternately so the other could sleep. Couldn’t get home early.
MoonWoman69 · 13/02/2024 20:04

Yes, but it was the friends we went with that made me want to come home, not the place. We'd been with them before, but as there was 6 of us that time and all the other 4 wanted to do was sit round the pool at the villa, we only saw them for a meal out at night. The second time, it was just 4 of us... Horrendous. They were rude and embarrassing every time we went out anywhere. We'd made an arrangement to take it in turns with the hire car. But everytime we said where we were going, they said oh, we can go too, we haven't been! We didn't have a moment alone and the one time we nearly did, they crashed back to the apartment drunk and leary... I said when we got home, never again and we never have!

Went to Bermuda for two weeks in September. It rained the whole time, we had two hours of sun. You can go around the island in a day and see everything there is to see. Breakfast was $33 a day each plus 17% service charge, dinner with a couple of drinks was around $180 nowhere any cheaper 17% on everything (I don’t mind tipping but they get it as part of their wages). Went to check out and pay our room bill which we worked out at about £400, by the time we paid cleaning at $36 per day, taxes and service it went to $1,400. To hire a Twizzy was $240 per day, a moped $130 per day. I could have got my head around it if we’d had a bit of sun. I just wanted to come home every day. We spent £13,000 not including flights.

kennycat · 13/02/2024 20:15

Most family holidays! Find them tedious and samey. Nobody wants to try a different sort of holiday so it’s just me cooking and cleaning like at home. Tbh if I didn’t do that I’d be vegetarian very bored just sitting around. I can’t do sitting around for more than about ten mins.
we’ve left a few holidays early because the weather has made them painful!

luckylavender · 13/02/2024 20:37

@JadeSeahorse - very surprised at your description of Bentota. I've not stayed there but my parents have many many times. I have been to Sri Lanka a few times, it's a beautiful magical place. Not as polished as some of the Far East but enchanting

Worse places, Fuerteventura- so boring. And whilst Egypt is an acquired taste, I've had a few very good holidays there. But my God Hurghada is a dump. We also had a terrible week in Marmaris once. It was the end of the season and we were the only guests in the hotel. It was really creepy. The pool was closed, the corridors were dark. Dinner was in the hotel next door complete with fighting cats every night. The only upside was we enjoyed the beauty of Marmaris in a way you couldn't in high season.

A barge holiday in February setting off from Market Harborough. It rained constantly, there was very little to do on route, we gave the lovely cabin bed to my mum and 7 year old son, so my husband and I slept on an uncomfortably bed in the err, lounge! The tiny telly didn’t work, so we downloaded films at the tiny pub to watch huddled around an iPad. My husband didn’t bring gloves, so he spent the time driving the barge wearing my mum’s bed socks, that needed to be changed every hour or so, and dried on the radiator. We stopped every so often so the dogs could relieve theirselves, in deep mud, which then got brought aboard the barge. We passed numerous drowned sheep….. we managed from Friday till Tuesday, then decided we were done!!!! However, it felt like a holiday when we got home with a deep bath, comfy bed and proper TV. Are you sure your holiday is that bad????😂😂😂

68User · 13/02/2024 20:42

Week in Cornwall August ‘97. Last minute ‘cottage’ booking which was a hideous very dated bungalow. Rained the whole week so ended up watching tv but it was the week Princess Diana died so wall to wall coverage of that. Never been back.

Also did a 2 week Florida trip (inc parks) which I didn’t enjoy. Queues for everything not just in the parks but even to park for beaches in Sarasota. Food awful too.

MrsPetty · 13/02/2024 20:45

Apart from mini breaks pretty much all holidays for me 🤦🏼‍♀️ I just realise as soon as I’m away that I like my home comforts too much and start counting down to being back in my own bed. I bought a caravan last year and have been busy furnishing her…my future as a Sylvanian holiday 🐌 with my home behind me 😂

Went to the Isle Of Wight one summer with DH. It rained from the minute we got off of the ferry, to when we got back on the ferry a week later. It was the first week of August, all the walks and sitting on the beach at Ventnor we had planned were scuppered. I bought a large bag of home made fudge for my mum, woke up on the morning of my birthday (half way through the holiday) and ate the whole bag full in one go I was so depressed. We had to spend loads of money we hadn’t planned on spending to do indoor things along with everyone else.

Weve never been back.

Isle of Wight was the same for us. Plus DS who was 1 got ill. I've never been so pleased to get back home - tried to come home early but all the ferry spaces were booked. I vowed never again to go anywhere that I couldn't drive back home from!

CrushingOnRubies · 13/02/2024 20:47

Well it was a bad holiday but we did come home

I was a teenager and parents had got a new caravan. So we went away to the same county we lived in. All my friends were going somewhere nice like northern France and I went up the road. Also we came home half way through to check the post and water plants. It was really nice weather Tbf and it would have been really bad in the rain. Also I was that age which didn't help

Also a week to butlins at a similar age and it rained all week and it was all aimed at toddlers

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 20:47

I like my own home and bed
If I could ' time travel ' to a place I'd like to visit for one day and be back in time for a 10pm bedtime I'd be happy.

RosePetals86 · 13/02/2024 20:49

Yes I’ve had two holidays I have been ecstatic to get home from. Corfu (booked on teletext many moons ago!) disaster of a week between location mix up/ crap weather/ freezing salt water pool full of dead flying ants and leaves.
Gran Canaria in February once- so much for winter sun - it pissed down the whole time we were there. It was absolutely dead too.
Wouldn't return to either!

Barbados last year. I was counting the days until I could go home. Literally nothing to do other than sit on the beach. Distinct lack of anywhere to eat out other than the outdoor fish market sat on plastic chairs at folding plastic tables while chickens and cats ran about under your feet. Public transport was unbelievably stressful. Abandoned falling apart houses everywhere. Very very run down. I found the people really nice though.

We went to Barbados in 2022. It was beautiful. There was enough to see and do for one holiday with a hire car and we ate in some great restaurants and cafes. Maybe it was the particular spot you were staying in, but hiring a car would have allowed you to explore. We struggled a lot with the heat though. It was January and 35c. It didn’t really ease off much in the evening or night either. Being older, we struggle with the heat, so we were glad to get home, but only due to the unrelenting heat.

Duchydutch · 13/02/2024 20:50

Oh Yes! I won’t go into too much detail, but we paid for DH family to go skiing thinking it would be lovely to have all the family do something new together, and make some good, happy, fun memories. However DS made it clear he and DIL would do their own thing, which included bring along a childminder and her friend for their two infant children. Which left DD and SIL and older GC left to our own devices, and only called together at meal times.
Not quite the holiday we envisaged.

ChilledBeez · 13/02/2024 20:51

Took a flight to Greece where you literally picked from a hat the place you went to once you got to the airport. We picked KAVOS. OMG! I had no idea such a place existed. Just seemed to be a big manky alley filled with bars either side seeing who could outwin each other with the loudest music. To make matters worse there was a hotel next to us with Karaoke until 4a.m. Must have heard "White Wedding" by ~Billy Idol a hundred times. Thank God it was only one week and I was pretty young.

Pllystyrene · 13/02/2024 21:12

We did a Christmas Market cruise just before Christmas. Literally everyone got sick. My already very poorly nephew got food poisoning. I have cealics and got sick from the food. My son got covid. I was 8 weeks pregnant felt awful. Literally sat on the toilet in the middle of the night being sick into the sink crying. Don't think we will ever book another cruise ever again. 😂

crew2022 · 13/02/2024 21:13

Fuerteventura

Cockroaches in the apartment on the hotel site. Complained and they moved us. Cockroaches in next apartment. No restaurant near by was stick with AI buffets and the resort was full of rise Russian families. For the first time in ages we booked 10 nights rather than 7.
Couldn't wait to come home.

LalaPaloosa · 13/02/2024 21:17

I had a similar experience going to the Isle of Wight. Never again!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 13/02/2024 21:25

Otterburn, Northumbria. Lots of rain. There was some sort of insect living in a kitchen cupboard. The lodge reeked of cigarettes. There was pubic hair in the supposed freshly changed bed.

It was the week after Farnborough air show & we found out we were next to the army bombing range where they were showcasing the aircraft to foreign buyers.
Low flying aircraft continuously overhead from 8am.

We left on the Wednesday. Couldn't take anymore.

CeriB82 · 13/02/2024 21:26

every time. I only go away for the kids. Personally I’d rather be at home. I don’t like travelling, flying, hot sun, and cities.

im happy alone walking a mountain

TiredyMcTired · 13/02/2024 21:32

The Dominican Republic. Effin hideous. Actually went twice 🙄First time was just me and a friend and we both had really bad food poisoning, (in a 5 star resort) spent most of the time in our room praying for it to stop and counting the hours until we could leave.

Stupidly went a second time with DH because we were offered a free holiday by a family member and I thought I might just have been unlucky first time. Nope. Party of 15 of us and every last one of us was violently ill. We were talking to another family who were staying there for a wedding and the bride had to have an injection to stop her D&V so she could get out of bed and get married. All of them were ill to varying degrees too. On the last day there was a bloke in reception sobbing because the doctor called in to assess him said he wasn’t fit to fly home. The plane toilets got a battering and it was hideous with people vomiting and queuing for the loo 😱

Even if someone offered me a million quid I would never go there again.
