Is there less 'chat' here nowadays?

I'm just musing, and maybe I'm wrong...

When I joined MN approx 13 100 years ago, there was a lot more actual, I dunno, chat. I think I mean the more light-hearted threads, I know there are still some excellent supportive and friendly and sometimes long threads on more serious topics still. I'm remembering people actually conversing back and forth on threads, not necessarily just the frequent posters, but anyone up for a discussion or chit chat. Nowadays the usual format seems a bit more 'OP asks question/makes a statement', 'a lot of people say their bit but don't necessarily reference previous answers or engage directly with anyone unless having a bum fight'.

i know there are exceptions, and I'm not referring to any recent thread in particular. Is it just my perception do you think? I could be talking shite 😄

I like when a thread becomes develops a bit of back and forth between posters exchanging opinions and ideas, don't like when it dissolves into nasty for nasty sake.

Yes, it does seem to often be that way. It always was, er, lively. But I'm sure the first few answers colour the rest a lot of the time, and people disagree just for the sake of it. I think it's a numbers thing and a waning attention span thing, there are far more mners now so polite or interesting discourse gets a bit drowned out with those just looking to say their piece then move on to the next thing.

Yes, I agree. I joined about the same time as you, OP and there's definitely less lighthearted chat.

Fewer decent bun fights too. I used to enjoy reading a good old fashioned MN bun fight thread that didn't end up just being thoroughly unpleasant like they often do these days.

Yes I've noticed that too. The equivalent of pressing the red button when a fist fight would do, things get nasty quickly, and almost any point of view can be Wrong. I do miss chatting about stupid shit without someone turning it into a fight/telling posters to grow up, or worse, threads just dying on their arse if there is a sniff of anything interesting 😆

There aren't really funny threads anymore. I used to guffae my way through threads on all sorts of topics and now it's just ishoos or meanness. Or if people are making "witty comments" it feels like they are trying too hard...

You're not wrong, actual conversations used to be a normal part of MN.

Completely agree, OP. I joined around the same time as you and I think Chat is going the same way as AIBU. Far too much of the dramatic hand wringing, "whatever shall I do" posting style and extremely quick to provide reasons why they cannot do anything sensible/well-meaning posters suggest could help, for my liking.🙄😆

I also DETEST the recent spate of posting pictures of a potentially medical or intimate condition.

I'm on MN too much, and it just seems so slow moving compared to previously.

The rot seemed to set in when it suddenly became necessary to spell out LIGHTHEARTED as a trigger warning in the title in the mid-10s

I never did work out why there was a mass humour failure, and the world just seems a more serious, heavy place since then. Increased name changing after data hacks hasn't helped either.

There are some lovely on-going chats in the quiter niche corners of the site.

I was just going to say there are lots of friendly threads going on in corners.

Yes, sometimes I see women other supporting other women, or women being so quick witted and funny on here, and I think Oh, yes, it's still MN.
