Anyone else regret big ticket items in their home?

DH and I bought some new couches recently and really regret our decision to get recliners. These sofas were quite expensive and can’t return, we also regret some blinds we got and wish we’d opted for shutters in our lounge. I guess I just wonder if it’s normal to have these regrets and if anyone else feels they have regretted some big items they bought for their house?

I do spend quite a lot of time thinking about things like curtains, and I must say I have loved ones I have chosen, so after reading this I will not be rushed!
Just doing a job now and I am so torn with paint choices! There are so many and they all look different when they are up, compared to a tiny swatch! I am overwhelmed.

Had a very light, matt tile floor in a bathroom and it showed EVERY SINGLE HAIR and speck of dirt!! Every single time I went in there I ended up celaing the floor and yes, I do mean 3 or 4 time a day.

@SkankingWombat thanks so much for the info. Happy to pay a good amount but need to know it's going to be as comfy as what we have now 🙏🏼 I will have a look.

@Poniesandpigs

we have original 1930s door but they are so battered. They also all have inexplicably been either cut too short -like 10-15cm too short or are very warped:

thinking we will replace with Oak.
Whetr did you get yours from and why do you regret it? If you don’t mind me asking

I bought my oak door to go in my 1830’s house from Doors of Distinction best door ever.

Our peloton 😅

My spin bike and treadmill 😂. I wanted to spend £500. DH insisted on spending £1500. I refuse to get rid of it even though we don’t use it. It’s taking up a lot of room in the garage 😬

A couple of very expensive G-Plan reclining sofas. We previously had G-Plan for around 30 years and the quality was excellent, removable covers for washing, smooth/silent reclining, very well built and sturdy. Just automatically went to a G-Plan retailer and quickly bought new ones, basically just choosing a pattern/colour we liked. Just assumed the quality is still the same, so didn't do any research, online reviews etc. What a massive disappointment. They're absolute crap. One creaks and groans when activating the recliner. There are flaws in the fabric in several places. The frame on the other creaks and groans when you sit on it. None of the covers are removable, so we won't be able to wash them. We reported the faults to the retailer, who in turn reported it to G-Plan, several times, but they keep sending the same "freelance" upholstery guy who comes out to have a look, but seems incapable of doing anything. He upturned the noisy reclining one, bashed the mechanism a bit with a hammer and now it's worse than ever. We did persuade him to replace the cover on one of the arms with several fabric flaws, but he just referred us to the "instruction" book for the other flaws where it says that minor flaws are normal! We'll never buy G-Plan again, the quality is crap and the after sales service is abysmal! Yet another long standing reputable manufacturer whose quality has gone down the toilet!

The other "big ticket" item was a brand new car. We had a second hand one with pretty high mileage when we bought it at around 18 months old, really liked it, but it was a bit "rough". We just wanted "like for like" - same model, but newer and lower mileage. Dealership gave us an offer we couldn't refuse for a brand new one. We kept repeating to them that we wanted like for like, same features, etc., but when the new one arrived, it was the same model, but completely different. Our old one had sliding drawers under all seats (front and back) but new one only had drawer under drivers' seat. In old one, there were footwell compartments front and back, in new one, only at the front. Old one had fold down tables on seat backs, new one didn't. It sounds petty, but it was storage and tables that was why we liked the model in the first place and they're things very hard to find! The other big thing was that the old car had automatic fold-in door mirrors and all round sensors - new one had manual door mirrors and only rear sensors. Dealership not remotely interested and just fobbed us off saying they were trivial matters and just pointed us to the back of the car where it showed the model. OH was really annoyed so he did a load of research and found that there were different options under the same model, and that the previous car was a top end version of the model, but the one they sold us was bottom end. We threatened going legal on them, and then they offered a refund of the difference between the cost of the top end and the cost of the bottom end, but what we wanted was the car we wanted, not a bit of money. Then they tried to suggest swapping it for an ex-demo car they had of the top model, but it was six months old, different colour, obviously a few thousand miles on the clock - they refused to refund the difference between cost when new and the cost of an ex-demo. They refused point blank to swap it for a new one of the right spec, so we were stuck with it. Still have it today, and it's still annoying that it's not the spec we told them we wanted!! I wish we'd taken them to court, but we backed off because of the stress and hassle!

Your old car sounds very interesting...what was the type, if you don't mind me asking? It sounds as if it was designed by a woman who knew what options are necessary in an auto...all that lovely storage space and fold down little tables. We once had a Jaguar with fold down tables. Used them all the time. Thanks!

I very seldom regret a big purchase because I am always very sure of what I want. Bought a new corner sofa last year, leather with one electric reclining seat, and we just never use it. I am worried about it because we have three cats! It's the most comfortable sofa ever, just love it. Unfortunately the cats have scratched it (mostly our new addition! Not so much deliberately as when they are playing!) but I took out cover so will hopefully be able to get it repaired.

I hated my last dishwasher because it never cleaned properly. The new one is a little bit better.

I hate, hate, hate my Shark vacuum! It's was the dog's bollocks to begin with - the amount of shit it took out of that carpet was unbelievable. Now it will barely pick up. Did I say how much I hate it?!

I also hate my Chinese slate kitchen floor but that's only in more recent years, and it's been down 25 years and I have plans to replace it.

I hate my shark too. Worst vacuum I’ve ever had… it’s even worse than the Dyson I had before, and that is saying something!

I can’t wait for it to break so I can buy another Henry.

Anjelika · 14/02/2024 18:37

Mine are:

the Karndean floor we got put everywhere downstairs but the lounge. Wanted a light colour but it shows every single bit of fluff and dirt. I can clean it and 10 minutes later it needs doing again.

the tiles and flooring in that main bathroom. Tiles look cold and floor looks shit. Got it done at the same time as the ensuite and just wish I'd gone with the same tiles and flooring as in there as they look so much nicer.

eufy robot vac. What a waste of money! Can only use it on the landing (with all bedroom doors closed) or the kitchen part of the kitchen/diner and that involves blocking it in there with wooden posts laid across the floor to stop it escaping. Have no idea how people just set theirs off overnight!

I too am interested in the negatives of recliners and or leather sofas. I have 2 dogs and a few cats and my current sofa is a light coloured fabric so my whole existence is taken up with washing throws which are strategically placed on my sofas and chairs.

I had never in 25 yrs of marriage purchased any new furniture myself, so when I decided we needed new sofas, I went for the best as I knew we'd keep them for a million years...
I purchased a top quality burgandy leather...one is 8 feet long and the other is 10 ft. (Since we had 3 teen DCs at the time and two Labrador Retrievers and a pug, I wanted to be able to have a spot for all of DCs friends to sit, too)
That was 24 years ago and they look brand new despite the labs scratching out their resting spots on the cushions and drenching from liquids. They are very easy to clean. I chose a slouchy design so you kind of melt into them. Some of the stuffing has flatten over time, but I've remedied that by taking the filling out of old bed pillows and stuffed them into the cushions ( make sure you get cushions with zips). All the dog have passed on and the DCs have flown the nest, so DH and I enjoy having a sofa each to stretch out on.
We both are old and have creeky knees, so I've added 4 inch tall feet to the existing ones.
Very happy with our leather sofas, but I'm a function over form person. The only downside is that the leather is cold to the touch at first..which to my postmenopausal self is a Godsend.
Edit: I forgot to add that if I had to do it over again I would not buy the 800 dollar ottoman...it is always in the way and no-one ever uses it.

On to my worst big ticket items I regret...getting rid of my still working fridge freezer to get a more efficient model...First off, US available fridge freezers are huge now and most have dark grey sides...they look like coffins to me and take up lots more room because of the extra energy efficient lining in the sides and doors..I got a french door samsung model with the freezer on bottom...it lasted about 3 years before the freon line started to leak 🙄...I also didn't like how you had to open both fridge doors at the same time letting out all the cold, and things were always buried under 2 ft of frozen food in the freezer part because it was a drawer.

Another expensive regret was a samsung clothes washer and dryer that love to decide to not turn on because I've pressed the wrong buttons...I couldn't wash clothes for 3 days once...finally looked online for a remedy which was to unplug the washer for a count of 5 and then plug back in and press 2 random buttoms on the pad at the same time...it worked!
I've decided to never buy another electronic device that is smarter than I am. 😩 ( pedants, pls feel free to correct my grammar)

Regret over the actual house purchase. Now trying to resell after 17 months.

Been there! I was in and out in 13-months!

My Eufy vac is great - I only use it upstairs as there is too much junk to move downstairs, but I use it for the bedrooms and bathrooms 90% of the time! Obvs have to hoover properly sometimes to do the skirtings and corners/edges etc, but not very often. But my sister bought one and never got on with it. My only issue is having to remove the trapped hair and empty the waste every time......

I totally get you re the car! I had a VW Passat for years which I loved, 2007 model. When it died I told DH I wanted the same (he buys written off cars from the salvage auctions and fixes them). We looked for ages but no luck, then he found an Audi A4, 2015 model. We couldn't try it out because they stopped viewings with Covid and haven't started again - but DH said - 'they're made by the same firm, it'll be the same car'.

Famous last words!! How wrong was he? I mean - it's a great car in lots of ways and drives well, so I suppose it does the job, but it was clearly designed by a man! I spent the first 6 months moaning about just about everything.....:

1/ This is actually important - I am short and to reach the pedals I have to move the seat so far forward that I can't get in and out easily, I hit my knees on the steering wheel, and the visibility is bad as my eyes are so close to the wide uprights to the right of the windscreen and the driver door.

2/ The heating, fan, radio etc knobs are really complicated and you have to take your eyes away from the road to spend hours adjusting stuff in the middle of the dash. In the Passat I had one dial for heat, one for fan and and an easy radio set up.

3/ Side pockets in the door - these are too small to hold a drink bottle without it falling out if you open the door. And shallow and rubbish anyway. There is a drink holder behind the gearstick but if you put a bottle there you'd knock it every time you changed gear.

4/ The boot. The Passat had two storage compartments either side with hard plastic slot in sides, great for plants, bottles etc. The Audi has one with a pathetic string vest type side which can't keep anything safe.

5/ Glasses holder. The Passat had one above the rearview mirror where I kept my driving glasses. It was fine. The Audi has one there but it takes about 5 mins to get your glasses in at the right angle to shut it. I never use it. My valuable glasses have to live dangerously chucked in the drink holder space behind the gearstick.

6/ General storage. The Passat had a number of little drawers/pop open storage areas on the dashboard between the steering wheel and the passenger side - for keeping garage door openers, change, phone cables etc. The Audi has filled that space with a far too complicated MMS that I never use, and the only storage is a small ashtray, and a really weird series of slots by the gear stick where apparently you can store coins in a vertical position (but not pound coins as they are too wide).

7/ It's an estate. The boot has a pull out thing you can use to cover your shopping. It has three positions - up in the air (so you can't see behind you), dangling slightly, or pulled across to the door. It's generally in the dangling position, which is just too low to put a shopping bag there unless you use a spare hand to lift it up while you place the bag. Why is it not on a couple of strings attached to the tailgate like cars always used to - and posh ones still do?

8/ The sun visors. I know I'm too short for these to be of any use really - but they only have an indent on the inner side of each one to pull them down - so if you are in the drivers seat you need to use your left hand. Now I know they are German cars - but so was the Passat and that had an indent either side so both driver and passenger could use either hand. I get it wrong every time, it's so annoying!

And breathe.....Grin. I know these are all minor issues (and I do like the heated seats) but @user1497, I really understand where you're coming from. If you spend a lot of money on something, you want what you want!

Shantayyoustaysashayaway · 18/02/2024 22:31

Sofa here. I've never had a new one & was excited to buy one. We have a Next outlet store near where I live so we had a look. They had a large deep sofa (I'm 5ft 2 & can lay full out on it) It's Chesterfield style so high arms. Lovely material & colour but the arms are way to high for me. I had to get new side tables that were a lot higher than we had. I'm constantly hauling myself up & getting on my knees to get stuff out of the drawer I keep my meds in. When we sat on it in the shop I didn't take any notice of the arms, was more concerned about the comfort. Live & learn!

asdfgasdfg · 29/02/2024 15:23

We got a local upholsterer to make up new cushions for out uncomfortable sofa, great now.
