Anyone else regret big ticket items in their home?

DH and I bought some new couches recently and really regret our decision to get recliners. These sofas were quite expensive and can’t return, we also regret some blinds we got and wish we’d opted for shutters in our lounge. I guess I just wonder if it’s normal to have these regrets and if anyone else feels they have regretted some big items they bought for their house?

Yes, twice

Last year a 65-inch QLED tv, it was too big for the bedroom but we are stuck with it as its too small for the sitting room

An expensive integrated sound system throughout the house that we rarely use as the Alex smark speakers around the house easier to use

Eeek how can that be too small for a sitting room?? Do you live in a castle 😂

Gettingfedupgrrrr · 11/02/2024 23:52

I too am interested in the negatives of recliners and or leather sofas. I have 2 dogs and a few cats and my current sofa is a light coloured fabric so my whole existence is taken up with washing throws which are strategically placed on my sofas and chairs.

Hooplahooping · 11/02/2024 23:52

Once bought a horrible + expensive sofa I had to live with for more than a decade.

I now recognise that spending £100 for an hour or two of interior designers time is 1000% worth it - I use the same one every time, she knows me - every now and again I’ll look at a room with her and talk about paint colours + she helps me put together a plan with furniture in my budget. She’s saved me so much money by avoiding mistakes!

I do regret installing a new bathroom downstairs, and not moving it upstairs - It looks bloody brilliant but it's in the wrong place (was trying to save a bedroom but that was stupid).

What's wrong with your recliners please folk? I am on the cusp of buying!

They are too small unless reclined. When they are reclined they make the room look messy. Everyone always reclines them and then gets up and leaves them like that sticking out annoyingly. They collect huge dust balls underneath.

Mostly though I hate mine because I don't feel comfortable with my legs sticking out in front of me. My feet get cold. I much prefer lying to one side on a sofa with my legs and feet tucked up next to me.

@SlipperyLizard

i’ve got IKEA carcasses with Plykea doors - 2.5 years on and they’re pristine. We chose Formica with circle cut out handles.

Can't you refinish? We have similar terracotta tiles throughout and they were getting horribly beaten up between three pre-schoolers and my bad habit of dragging furniture around.

We bought some refinishing stuff off amazon, gave them a good clean and then put on with a paint roller. It dries overnight and completely rejuvenates them, including resealing scuffs. Miraculous stuff and doesn't seem particularly toxic unlike a lot of floor stuff.

I’m very interested in this! Could you send a link to what you used?

Zippedydoodahday · 12/02/2024 07:16

@Gettingfedupgrrrr Our leather sofas were a real pain with cats and dogs. Neither intentionally scratched the sofas, but they'd catch their claws on them and they got terribly scratched and scruffy over time.

Franticbutterfly · 12/02/2024 08:11

An all singing all dancing bathroom cabinet that has Bluetooth for music, demister etc...total waste of money.

SlipperyLizard · 12/02/2024 09:28

@FantasticElasticBand they look great, I think DH wants to replace the whole kitchen (he now has a job where he can get a significant howdens discount) but these look more durable than ours. They’re beautiful colour and design, just not fit for everyday use!

@Franticbutterfly i love my Bluetooth demister mirror cabinet!

The woodburner.
Am getting it removed.
Dusty and the ugly

And also not good for your lungs and the environment.

Psychoticbreak · 12/02/2024 09:54

3k on a corner couch I now hate.
2k on a glass table and chairs which I also hate.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 12/02/2024 09:58

My washing machine. It’s a cunt
I asked them to take it away as soon as they unpacked it but they ignored me and just installed it.

although it’s been behaving at the moment so I shouldn’t tempt fate

Mazuslongtoenail · 11/02/2024 18:39

No, but we put a lot of consideration into all big purchases. More than most people would consider reasonable I think. (e.g. we spent every evening for over a week comparing cushion covers 🤪. DH did a mood board).

But by the time we commit, we’re absolutely sure it’s what we want.

Me too
It takes me ages to decide what I want and I only buy what I really want . I read
loads of reviews . In addition I often get some information from past MN threads.

As a result , I have never regretted a big purchase

GenerousGardener · 12/02/2024 10:04

Hugely expensive leather sofas from Next that DH was insistent on. When they arrived they looked like huge grey elephants in our front room. The sofa I used was massively uncomfortable and you sat on it rather than in it. Cold to the skin and just totally horrible. The dogs hated them as much as me. After a couple of years putting up with them DH’s sofa stretched so you could see the felt lining of the inner construction. I was pretty cross that had happened as they cost so much.

Called it a day and went to Sofology and bought a fabric corner sofa with a recliner at each end. Bliss!

Newbeginningsandhappy · 12/02/2024 10:08

Gas fire. Broke on multiple occasions. Supplier went bust. Cracks the plaster and we have to re plaster and paint. Wish we had gone for a wood burner.

Fizbosshoes · 12/02/2024 10:14

We have mosaic tiles in the kitchen. It took me probably 10 years to admit to DH that I didn't really like them...because I'm pretty sure I chose them! And they were a complete pig for him to do! But I think they make it look too "busy" and if the kitchen is not super tidy (which it often isnt) then I feel they enhance the mess/clutter. He also doesn't especially like them anymore ....but we've had the kitchen 17 years and still not done anything about them!😂

VelvetShrimp · 12/02/2024 10:16

I have dilly-dallied about buying a new sofa for months. The old one was an eBay shitter, meant to last two years but actually lasted about seven.

I wanted foam with feather topped cushions, high back and soft/comfortable feel, with washable covers. All these demands when bought new would probably be £1000 + for a four seater.

I waited and looked at every sofa on eBay in a 100 mile radius, and found what I wanted for £100. With pets and children all over it, it doesn't matter that it's slightly faded, it was clean enough and comfortable. It will probably be here for at least ten years 😅 It's actually just an IKEA one, but it's surprisingly good quality with a solid frame and the feathery soft bits and soft wide arms.

I looked at more expensive new ones and underneath the good looks they are just cheap foam and creaky frames. Not worth the money, Duresta sofa second hand would have been my initial choice because they last for YEARS, or Loaf at a push, but the IKEA one ticks the boxes.

The second sofa is a second hand £20 desperation purchase and it's so cheap and awful, but it doesn't give up easily so we are stuck with it for now 😅

Second hand is so good (I'd they are clean..). It takes so much pressure off the decision when money isn't clouding it as much.

Black wardrobes. They match the current way the rooms decorated but it dawned on me that what if I wasn’t to redecorate - what matches black wardrobes!!!

crew2022 · 11/02/2024 18:33

Yes. We spent a fortune on blinds we don't like in the lounge. We regret the model of dishwasher in our new kitchen AND the steam oven which we've used once.
I get overwhelmed when having lots of work done and don't make sensible choices.
I should have learned this by now.

Don’t beat yourself up about it! We’ve not long done a whole house reno, and the number and speed of decisions which have to be made is immense!

My only regret is going totally open plan in the kitchen/living areas. The plan was always to replace the wall we took down with a glass wall with doors, (it’s about light) but we ran out of money…we’ll still do it, but I’m hating the wait and the lack of space division

Skiphopbump · 12/02/2024 10:19

I have Karndean flooring in a few rooms which looks great. I have a different style in my kitchen and it looks shit - would rather have Lino.

My sofa however was a great purchase. We walked through the customer returns section in John Lewis, I tried out a couple of sofas and fell in love with one. What was probably someone else’s regret is my pleasure! Was a great price too.

toomanyleggings · 12/02/2024 10:22

our fitted wardrobes. They’re sliding ones and you can’t get into them properly and the doors keep coming off the runners. Should have got normal doors

Exactly what I was thinking!! 🤣🤣

GoldenMeadow · 12/02/2024 10:39

Really expensive (multiple) orthopaedic pillows for neck pain. Didn't work.

New memory foam mattress for neck and back pain. Made absolutely no difference!

Blinds in our kitchen. Also really expensive and we shouldn't have bothered.

A couple of very expensive G-Plan reclining sofas. We previously had G-Plan for around 30 years and the quality was excellent, removable covers for washing, smooth/silent reclining, very well built and sturdy. Just automatically went to a G-Plan retailer and quickly bought new ones, basically just choosing a pattern/colour we liked. Just assumed the quality is still the same, so didn't do any research, online reviews etc. What a massive disappointment. They're absolute crap. One creaks and groans when activating the recliner. There are flaws in the fabric in several places. The frame on the other creaks and groans when you sit on it. None of the covers are removable, so we won't be able to wash them. We reported the faults to the retailer, who in turn reported it to G-Plan, several times, but they keep sending the same "freelance" upholstery guy who comes out to have a look, but seems incapable of doing anything. He upturned the noisy reclining one, bashed the mechanism a bit with a hammer and now it's worse than ever. We did persuade him to replace the cover on one of the arms with several fabric flaws, but he just referred us to the "instruction" book for the other flaws where it says that minor flaws are normal! We'll never buy G-Plan again, the quality is crap and the after sales service is abysmal! Yet another long standing reputable manufacturer whose quality has gone down the toilet!

The other "big ticket" item was a brand new car. We had a second hand one with pretty high mileage when we bought it at around 18 months old, really liked it, but it was a bit "rough". We just wanted "like for like" - same model, but newer and lower mileage. Dealership gave us an offer we couldn't refuse for a brand new one. We kept repeating to them that we wanted like for like, same features, etc., but when the new one arrived, it was the same model, but completely different. Our old one had sliding drawers under all seats (front and back) but new one only had drawer under drivers' seat. In old one, there were footwell compartments front and back, in new one, only at the front. Old one had fold down tables on seat backs, new one didn't. It sounds petty, but it was storage and tables that was why we liked the model in the first place and they're things very hard to find! The other big thing was that the old car had automatic fold-in door mirrors and all round sensors - new one had manual door mirrors and only rear sensors. Dealership not remotely interested and just fobbed us off saying they were trivial matters and just pointed us to the back of the car where it showed the model. OH was really annoyed so he did a load of research and found that there were different options under the same model, and that the previous car was a top end version of the model, but the one they sold us was bottom end. We threatened going legal on them, and then they offered a refund of the difference between the cost of the top end and the cost of the bottom end, but what we wanted was the car we wanted, not a bit of money. Then they tried to suggest swapping it for an ex-demo car they had of the top model, but it was six months old, different colour, obviously a few thousand miles on the clock - they refused to refund the difference between cost when new and the cost of an ex-demo. They refused point blank to swap it for a new one of the right spec, so we were stuck with it. Still have it today, and it's still annoying that it's not the spec we told them we wanted!! I wish we'd taken them to court, but we backed off because of the stress and hassle!
