Anyone else regret big ticket items in their home?

DH and I bought some new couches recently and really regret our decision to get recliners. These sofas were quite expensive and can’t return, we also regret some blinds we got and wish we’d opted for shutters in our lounge. I guess I just wonder if it’s normal to have these regrets and if anyone else feels they have regretted some big items they bought for their house?

So completely normal to have regrets when you spend a lot. I have!!!

Bioethanol fire.

We are yet to find a fuel that doesn't stink

I bought a bed sofa in case of guests but it wasn't very comfortable. My son moved out into his own house. I said he could have it to put in his spare room so he could put up a guest. I was glad to be rid of it. Only problem is we're his most frequent guest so it backfired on me a bit.

My Hilarys blinds are a regret. They cost so much and only lasted 2 years. So from now on I will only be buying cheap blinds.

I'm really bad at making big purchase decisions (put them off for literally years) but I rarely regret them once I have made them. If I suspect I will regret it I put it off til I don't think that any longer.

My current one where I would quite like a new version but suspect I would regret it is sofas. My current ones are about 35 years old, they're tired looking for sure, and I wouldn't choose the colour. I got them second hand and they were intended to be a year or two's worth of sofa while I got together the savings to buy them new. But they're also comfy and the sofas themselves (rather than the covers) are still in perfect nick. I look at new sofas and they are so expensive and often very big (my room isn't suitable for a modular type one) and I just can't believe they would be as well made as my current ones.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow friends of ours had similar. At first I thought that getting everything new was a silver lining to the terrible situation they had been through. Then I realised how stressful it was.
I hate the floor tiles in our bathroom. I'm not entirely sure why, I just do. To change them would involve changing everything in the bathroom I think so we'll be living with them for another 15 years or so at least!

Same! I absolutely hated my bathroom floor tiles. Horrible cheap shiny looking things that showed every mark. I have just had a kardean floor fitted straight over the tiles. It’s a 2 day job, first day they level the floor with a sealant, no mess at all! I am thrilled with it. We took the toilet and the bidet up but were told afterwards there was no need. Just an idea in case you want an alternative to tiles .

My sofas

They only fit in our odd shaped living room one way and I hate not being able to move them around. Also they're too big.

Spirallingdownwards · 11/02/2024 20:26

TBF unless you are Joey and Chandler recliners of any type are not a good choice

New2024 · 11/02/2024 20:28

Been looking at a recliner 2 seater sofa. I don’t really want a recliner, but they can be assembled in the room, which is a plus with our restrictions to access in the cottage. Be interested to hear why you regret the recliners.

Maverick66 · 11/02/2024 20:30

I hear you!!
Suite of furniture which we spent 12 months considering and 3 months waiting for delivery. Hate it !!!!!!!

I avoid this by not spending too much money on each item. Sofas can be extortionate. I just have Ikea ektorp in fabric (which could be changed). If I spent 300 instead of 3000 then if I have any sort of problem, I won’t have wasted thousands. You have to be careful not to go too cheap, as it could end up with you getting a shit item.

Seconding this - we had Ektorp for years and our new ikea sofas are fab!

Also with "big" purchases we discuss it for a long time before doing it.

The only mild thing I regret is the flooring in the "veranda" at the back of the house. It was a project between DH and his brother who was starting up a business doing that type of flooring so we were a trial run. It's extremely slippy (dangerously slippy!!!) but it cost about £200 so I'm happy to forget about it and put mats down. DH loves it though 🤷‍♀️

SlipperyLizard · 11/02/2024 20:34

We spent a small fortune on door fronts for our ikea kitchen (from Superfront if anyone is thinking of it - don’t), they look great but have worn sooooo badly we’ll likely replace them within 5 years. Ikea ones would have been less stylish but now wouldn’t look shit!

user14520745 · 11/02/2024 20:36

I hate the whole bloody house

All the neighbours windows line up with ours, how on earth I didn't notice when I viewed it I have no idea. It's like a goldfish bowl. Walls are like paper and you can hear everything the neighbours do. Hate it, can't afford to move.

Also the kitchen floor tiles are a grubby-looking cold grey, they looked nice in the shop. More money wasted 😭

lpylu · 11/02/2024 20:37

The splash back behind the hob. I wanted antique mirror affect but when it arrived the stressed patches I thought would just be around the edges are all over the entire mirror. We bought it in Covid times so only saw a small sample.
It was north of £1000 and nothing we could do.
I hate looking at it everyday! Looks like a mirror that someone has taken black spray paint to.

Our house caught fire in 2013.’

The insurance company pay for all predicating and furniture. To be found in about 2 months. So we had to refurnish and decorate a house in 8 weeks. Many many regrets.

Shit dishwasher
Shit washer
Shit oven,
Shit stair and landing carpet
Shit shit bathroom
Shit mattress.
Shit fridge freezer
Super expensive shit sofa.

Its hard to do it all at once.
It all needs replacing now at the same time😟

Edited

This is awful, did you get to the bottom of how the fire started?

Orangebadger · 11/02/2024 20:43

We had an extension done a few years back. We spent so much time focused on the house that we gave very little thought to the garden. Ended up choosing patio slabs in a rush. I hate them! They are too light, too smooth so too slippery. But really can't justify doing anything about it so just live with it!

SquigglePigs · 11/02/2024 20:44

When we bought our house 6 years ago we had to buy curtains for most rooms and there's one set in particular I just look at and think "why, why did I think they were nice". Fortunately they aren't in a room we use regularly.

The other one is more the other way - the house came with a massive summer house/shed that dominated the garden so we took it down and replaced it with something a much more sensible size. Then filled it! So now wishing we had the bigger one (but it was so ugly.....).

Orangebadger · 11/02/2024 20:45

Oh and I forgot, our bath... one of those stupid baths that sit in the middle of the bathroom, look lovely but so bloody uncomfortable and one side is too close to the wall and you cannot clean the floor down there! Really wish we had got a big standard bath, but tbh I wanted a big standard bath, DH wanted this one.

Oh and I’ve got two Neff Hide & Slide ovens which rarely get turned on because we always use the air fryer 🤣

Edited

Depends what you cook and for how many I guess, but i have these ovens and they are brilliant, I wouldn't be without them ! I make a lot of bread and the dough proving function is brilliant, as is the circo- roasting setting for things like roasted veg and potatoes.

Kalevala · 11/02/2024 20:50

I regret wasting £200 on a TV, it's rarely on.

TwistedSisters · 11/02/2024 20:53

We've recently done a fairly big extension and had to make lots of decisions.
The only thing I mildly regret so far is not researching flooring a bit more. We went LVT which is great, very practical, but we didn't get a border put down with it and I often think now it would look really smart with one. However, it would have been quite a bit more expensive so I tell myself we probably wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway.

MattDamon · 11/02/2024 20:56

Interested to hear why people hate their recliner sofas so much? I'd love a recliner chair but our (otherwise amazing) Next sofa is massive, so not enough room.

cheeseonwheels · 11/02/2024 20:58

Velvet sofas, bought on impulse when we moved house and our old sofas didn't suit the room. They show every speck of dust and hair that has ever existed and aren't at all comfortable! Unfortunately we're stuck with them for the time being!

A sofa, donated to a friend now who loves it, and I bought another one
