So as the title says and it falls on Valentine’s Day this year! What bad habits is everyone wanting to kick and get a head start on that failed on New Year’s resolutions

Social media - Instagram and mumsnet! Am trying to plan what I'm going to do instead!!

Iamacatslave · 11/02/2024 17:29

Men.

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 11/02/2024 17:53

I need to give up opening my mouth and putting food into it.

AuntieMarys · 11/02/2024 17:54

Nothing. A load of bollocks

Quizine · 11/02/2024 17:58

Too many restrictive rules run our lives as it is. I am going to do the opposite of giving anything up.

BeyondMyWits · 11/02/2024 17:59

Nothing. I'm not religious.

Am I going to be a hypocrite and eat pancakes on Tuesday anyway? Damn right.

GrumpySock · 11/02/2024 18:01

Sugar (as indulgence not a diet), social media, amazon parcels (I order things endlessly, little things but still it is almost constant and too materialistic)
I'd like to get into a habit of reading rather than scrolling (I have some books set aside), thinking more about what I could improve in my behaviour, spend time with more quality (hate the word but it makes sense) and attention to my family
Oh and I need to self discipline myself. A lot. I need to study.

DH always gives up alcohol for Lent.

So he’s prepping this weekend by making sure that he’s having a few drinks. 🤣

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/02/2024 18:09

All of the above!
I like the idea of giving up Amazon /vinted - that’s my biggest vice at the moment.
I am still dry from dry January and taking it to Easter Sunday would make it 3 months, so I might continue with that as well.

And Absolutely I’m not religious and too damn right I’m having pancakes 🥞 😋

ALunchbox · 11/02/2024 18:14

Absolutely nothing.

Greybeardy · 11/02/2024 18:49

Mumsnet! 😂

babbi · 11/02/2024 18:53

Alcohol and chocolate 😬😂

ZenNudist · 11/02/2024 19:00

Definitely sugar, possibly also other crisps and treaty stuff. So maybe I should say snacks. I am too in the habit of rewarding myself for getting to the end of the day by eating.

I could do with a lenten book recommendation.

I'd like to take up being in bed by 1030.

Maybe I can combine the early bed with a bit of prayer time.

BunniesRUs · 11/02/2024 19:02

Nothing, I don't observe Lent as I am an atheist. However, probably alcohol and meat if I was a Christian.

TheSmallAssassin · 11/02/2024 19:10

I'm giving up Easter Eggs for Lent.

GrumpySock · 11/02/2024 19:29

@ZenNudist oh yes bed time. I'm aiming for 11pm which sounds unrealistic but I need to try.

Also Rosary and I'd like to learn some Latin prayers by heart. That's on the religious side.

DatingDinosaur · 11/02/2024 20:14

If I give anything up for Lent I'll die of boredom rather than ill health Confused

I like the bedtime curfew idea so I might fast between the hours of 11pm and 6am Grin

DeanElderberry · 11/02/2024 20:23

Alcohol and sweets, cake, biscuits. The very good thing about poor old St Patrick dying in the middle of a bleak Irish Lent a millennium and a half ago is that in Ireland we get a day off in mid-March. Do have to go to Mass (where we get to say Alleluia and the Gloria) but then it's sweets and booze for the rest of the day.

I accidentally read the whole Bible between the end of December and yesterday. I've taken a day off today, but think I'll go back and re-read the Gospels and the Epistles in Lent and forever long it takes after that to finish them.

When I was about 15, and during a convent school assembly, Fr Basil told us 'Lent isn't Weight Watchers!'

I've never forgotten it.
