Camping compromises

A few years ago my MIL bought a caravan (towing) specifically to come on holiday with us as we're campers.

The problem is we are normally off grid campers. Wild camp/small sites, certainly no electric. She hadn't realised there was more than one type of camping.

I cans see we'll need to compromise but there are some things our ND family really struggle with. Noise and cars on pitches are two.

Can anyone recommend a site that might suit us? Happy to go anywhere wales/south england.

Gosh that sounds tricky. I've camped for years and can't think of anywhere that allows tourers but doesn't have cars parked on pitches.

We holiday with an another family who have a tourer and we often struggle to find a site that suits both families requirements. Luckily they are such great company we are willing to compromise a bit.

The nicest we've been to that allows both tents and tourers is Three Cliffs Bay in The Gower. It's well spaced out and very quiet at night. It does have hook ups - not sure if it has a non electric field. No entertainment hub/pool area - these are things we avoid!

The other option is to find two different campsites close to each other? We've often thought about that but decided we prefer being close to our friends.

I think you’ll be hard pushed to find a site that takes caravans but doesn’t allow cars on pitches honestly.

What your looking for is a site that does exclusive field hire I reckon. There are a couple in wales. Have you checked the camping Facebook pages. They will be your best bet.

Just thought of another place we love. Tregarten Park in Cornwall. We broke our "no pool rule" for this place as the reviews were so good.

The pool area is small and peaceful. More like a boutique hotel pool than a holiday park one. No entertainment hub so it ticked that box for us.

The only noise at night was from a rather vocal cow in a nearby field!

We went twice as loved it.

Check out the MN camping board, OP!

Thanks the this. The Times had an article about it last year and it’s on my to do list to book.

Thank you so so much!
The Cornish campsite looks beautiful but a bit too far for this particular trip.

I appreciate all the advice.

Have you looked at caravan & camping club certified locations? We use these a lot as there are usually only 5 pitches. Some have been large fields where you can park more or less where you like, with one or two electric hook ups which the tourer could use. We have a solar panel on our tourer too and can go off grid for about 4/5 in the summer so long as there’s water and an elsan point. UKCampsite is also good for searching for different types of pitch.

Is she prepared to use her caravan without electric hook up or are you looking for sites that cater to both?

A beautiful Wild Camping spot on a working sheep farm, with no electric hook up, but would blow you plenty of space and to take both a tent and a caravan is Coco's Wild Camp in mid Wales
